Song Remakes
After downloading some re-makes of some songs recently, I started thinking about which songs I'd like to see be re-made. At the top of my list, I'd like to see a re-make of "It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To." I actually like that song expcet that you can barely hear the lyrics because the music is louder than the singer. I'd really like to hear it be re-made with a better balance of the volume and updated music. So, what are some songs you'd like to see be re-made? What are some re-makes of songs that you do like? Or do you think that songs shouldn't be re-made?

I can't think of any songs that I would like to see remade... but I do enjoy the remake of "Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm because I think the singer and the music sound alot better then Michael Jaskson (no offense to Jacko, I love most of his songs). I also like the remake "Blue Monday" by Orgie because their version seems to have more anger in it and they use actual insturments.
I do not like the remake of "Pappa Don't Preach" by Kelly Osborne because I personally think she cannot sing at all. I am appaled at the Duff Sister's remake of "Our Lips are Sealed," they take the origional meaning of the song (the Go-gos wild endevers) and ruin it. That and I also think that Hilary can't sing either.... (hearing her voice over and over while working at Blockbuster does that to you).

I agree on both counts. I adore the remake of Blue Monday, and Alien Ant Farm's version of Smooth Criminal is just kickass.KoiNoVash wrote:I can't think of any songs that I would like to see remade... but I do enjoy the remake of "Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm because I think the singer and the music sound alot better then Michael Jaskson (no offense to Jacko, I love most of his songs). I also LOVE the remake of "One more time (hit me baby)" by Ahmet and Dweezil Zappa. It's got the most awesome guitars in the background, and is very hard rock.
The worst remake I've ever heard was Madonna's horrid rendition of American Pie. Talk about ruining a classic. She positively destroyed it.

I like Elton John's version of Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. His singing and the insturments just sound better than John Lennon's version for some reason.
I also like Oingo Boingo's version of I Am The Walrus. >_< I can't stand the Beatles version, but love their version (especially the live one). Danny's voice=yum *_*

If you think that's bad, you should have heard her version of Imagine by John Lennon she sang for some Tsunami concert. She spent the entire time sitting on a stool, sounding like she was stoned and about to go into a coma. Then, towards the end, she gets up and takes a jerky step forward, like she's about to have a seizure. I am not kidding. I honestly thought she was going to faint. The worst remake I've ever heard was Madonna's horrid rendition of American Pie. Talk about ruining a classic. She positively destroyed it.

Covers (or mentiuoned here as remakes) are kind of a necessity in the music world. For the most part I enjoy them, as they can show how songs work out in a different genre, and they usually come out pretty good. Though I agree that Madonna butchered American Pie in her cover of the song, not so much that she covered it, but that the transition between genres did not work at all. I can't make more detailed comments on it as it's been years since I heard her cover of it and I've done what I can to not remember it. But otherwise, other covers I've heard have actually worked really well, there's more covers that have worked out well than those that haven't based on those I've heard thus far. As for what I'd like to see remade, nothing really comes to mind right now, though I'd welcome any cover I see.

I typically don't mind covers, but it depends upon the song, really. I love the band "Me First and the Gimmie-Gimmies." They're a cover band, and they cover songs well. I love Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams" and like Koi and Tiffu said, I adore Orgy's version of "Blue Monday."
However, as for covers that I hate... I can narrow it down to two. Slipknot's cover of "Baby Got Back" and anytime someone tries to cover "Another Brick in the Wall." Those songs are NOT to be touched.

I actually quite fond of cover songs. I admit, sometimes they ruin songs but like MarioKnight said, they are pretty much a necessity in the music business. Some covers totally kicked ass though. I adore Marylin Manson's cover of 'Tainted Love' and I've forgoten their name, but the band who did a rock cover of 'I'm a Genie in a Bottle.' That was 100x cooler the Christina Agulera's original.

...do we even need to mention the A*Teens annoying remaking of ABBA songs? Hearing them makes me want to bang my head against a wall at the very least.

there are definately some good cover songs out there. for instance sixpence none the richer's cover of 'there she goes' was quite good. chantal kreviazuk also has some good covers of 'in my life' and 'leaving on a jet plane'. also nancy sinatra singing 'my baby shot me down' which is on the kill bill soundtrack was actually originally sung by cher and was extremely hokey. also (not that i really like the version) whitney houston's 'i will always love you' which was a huge success for her was actually a dolly parton song fron the 70's. - I'm just mentioning this one to show the importance of covers in the biz. another good one is 'landslide' by the dixie chicks.
most of the successful cover songs are as such because they bring classic songs to a new generation. but i'd have to agree with everyones opinion of 'american pie'

Actually, the song "Bang Bang" was written for Cher, but she didn't like it. Nancy Sinatra is the original singer of the song, and Cher started singing it afterwards.Takanori-chan wrote:there are definately some good cover songs out there. for instance sixpence none the richer's cover of 'there she goes' was quite good. chantal kreviazuk also has some good covers of 'in my life' and 'leaving on a jet plane'. also nancy sinatra singing 'my baby shot me down' which is on the kill bill soundtrack was actually originally sung by cher and was extremely hokey. also (not that i really like the version) whitney houston's 'i will always love you' which was a huge success for her was actually a dolly parton song fron the 70's. - I'm just mentioning this one to show the importance of covers in the biz. another good one is 'landslide' by the dixie chicks.

I think one of the most unexpected covers I've heard was "Crazy," written by Willie Nelson, popularized mostly by Patsy Cline, done this time around by Kidney Thieves. O_o;; I think it was in Bride of Chucky, but I could be wrong. Another totally trippy one was "Jesus Christ Superstar" done by Slovakian (sp?) band Laibach (anyone remember the flash video of the Commie Kitties? Yeah, that band...) But come on...best cover ever has to be "She-Bangs" by William Hung.

i'll have to agree with you. i didn't actually do my research on it, I was just thinking of a song with more than one version.

I absolutely love Hanson's covers of I Want You to Want Me (REM), Sympathy For the Devil (The Rolling Stones), Teach Your Children (originally by ??), Magic Carpet Ride (originally by ??) Shake a Tail Feather (originally by ??) Gimme Some Lovin' (originally by ??), and Dirrty (Christina Aguilera)- LMFAO- seriously. I absolutely hated the original version of Dirrty, but I loved Hanson's cover of it. It's weird how that goes. I would love to see Hanson cover There She Goes (so many people covered it, I have no idea who wrote that song originally), Brown Eyed Girl (by ??), and John Lennon's Imagine.
If anyone knows the name of the artists whose songs Hanson covered, please tell me! I hear those original classics at work all the time and I only know the words because of Hanson! but I have no clue who wrote those songs originally!
I also like Ayumi Hamasaki's Japanese cover of the English song, Night of Fire (by ??)
"Teach your children well" is sung by Crosby, Stills, and Nash.RoastedTwinkies wrote:

Another good one I just thought of is Rika Fukami's (Sailor Venus) version of the song Venus by Bananarama. XD It suits her so much.

I generally like remakes, just 'cause it's fun to hear something old in a new version... they usually suck though, IMO. However, I do like some re-makes.
My absolute most favorite re-make of all time is Fiona Apples cover of The Beatles song "Accross the Universe" that she did for the Pleasantville OST. I think her version fits the lyrics better, much more haunting and such. Just my opinion though.

And maybe it's just me, but I couldn't imagine Hanson doing good versions of those songs. It may be because I despise Hanson, though.
And I'll add a few more to my list. Weezer's covers of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" "Uptown Girl" and "Mrs. Robinson" are great. Le Tigre's cover of "I'm So Excited" is good, too.
EDIT: Wow. Codine kills my brain. Cheap Trick did "I Want You To Want Me." I think Billy Idol or Billy Joel (I always get them confused) might have done a cover of it, but it's originally by Cheap Trick.

Bedlam may have done a version of Magic Carpet Ride, but the original is by Steppenwolf.
