Post by usachan » Tue Jan 18, 2005 2:04 am

Has anyone seen this yet? I saw it today and I loved it!! I have been a fan of the music since I was like, 2 and the movie, in my opinion did if every bit of justice. Emmy Rossum was aweseome!! As were Gerard Butler, and Patrick Wilson. What do you all think?

I thought it was great, but not nearly as great as when I saw it on Brodway. It just didn't have the same feel.
I did kinda like the fact that they moved the chandelier fall to the end of Don Juan insted of Il Muto though, made it seem like more of a disaster.
I love this movie so much. Everytime I see it I nearly cry. I, however, am strong, and do not. *is brave* The fact that my name is Christine also makes the movie sorta funny in a way. I'm always holding out my arms and yelling, "THERE'S ONE CHRISTINE THAT WOULD STAY BY YOU!" to the Phantom. XD
Gerald Butler rules. He makes a very cool Phantom.
All the songs, the humor, the emotions, makes this movie rock. I really want to see the muscial now.

I was looking for a topic like this :)
I LOVED this movie. Great music, and a VERY sad story. Emmy Rossum made an EXCELLENT Christine. *Wants the chandelier*
“See this butt? Yeah. Look at it. LOOK AT MY BUTT. This is all you’re getting. MY BUTT to look at it. Yeah, bet you’re sorry now, aren’t you? You’d like to see my cute fuzzy face, wouldn’t you? But all you’re getting is the BUTT. LOOK AT IT. LOOK AT MY BUTT. Sucker.”
The thing is, Henrietta has—how can I put this? Kind of a big butt. If Henrietta were a celebrity? She’d be J-Lo.
Not that J-Lo has what I would call a big butt. But others have opined that this is so. I think J-Lo has a normal, healthy butt. As does Henrietta.

If you're a fan of musicals (be they Broadway or on the big screen), I think you'd like this movie, too. I'm not so nit-picky a fan, so I enjoyed the movie thoroughly, and is very faithful to the version performed on stage (hopefully, Jen and I will be able to go when it comes to Boston in April).

My gripes:

The actor who does the Phantom. Good acting, but your voice needs work. A LOT of work. It has potential, but your coach should be fired or reprimanded for what seems like rushed rehersals.

The forced-upon fight scene in the cementary. Even if you haven't seen the play in a while *raises hand*, there's this "this doesn't belong here" feel to the whole thing. No need for this at all.

I didn't like that either, origionally
The phanton stood upon the tomb of Chirstine's father and shot fireballs at Raoul and Christine before they ran off.
Really what was wrong with that? And the magical lasso wasn't magical anymore. They just kinda sucked all of the supernatural elements out of the phantom.

I just saw this today!! I have fallen in love!!! I didn't really know anything about it before today and I only ever heard the music of the night before, but I absolutely loved it. Emmy Rossum was soooooo good. My favorite parts were the part on the roof and the song The Phantom of the Opera. And I agree with you Starscream....that fight didn't really seem to belong in there.

Ooh, I liked his voice. Very deep. However, it must be hard to share the singing screen with Emmy Rossum, as she would kick the crap out of anyone- her voice is high and beautiful. Lots of vibrato in there too.

See, when he was deep, he was good; but he broke into a terrible falsetto FAR too many times for my taste. He needs to stick with the deeper voice for him to have a nice, consistent peformance.

Eh. I guess Andrew Lloyd should have had the phantom a little lower at times :D .
Btw, I'm thinking about changing my avvie to a phantom one... feedback? I've already got the POTO sig now. :D
Oh, and does anyone else here DISLIKE Raoul? Because I think he was fairly sickening... I mean, he's like this slimy pretty boy, and PLUS he had to have the perfect voice... graar.

Phantom of the Opera is actually one of my favourite books. :D AlW's version is a favourite of mine also. I liked the movie depsite some changes. I'm a big Michael Crawford fan so I wished they would of used him (like they originally were suppose to in the 90s) as the phantom. But hey Gerry wasn't too bad. It could of been worse...alot worse.

I haven't been able to catch it yet but it actually looks like a very intersting movie.

I can't really blame that guy for coming up short, since he's only been training for about a year before filming. Compared to Emily Rossum or the Raoul guy, both of whom have been singing for most of their careers, he's going to fall a little short. Its like sending a guy who's been practicing karate for a year against Jet Li, there's no way he can make it.

Apparently Joel Schumacher wanted Emmy to sound more innocent which is why her voice sounds a little weak at some points. The high E in the phantom song was turned into an E flat if I'm not mistaken. I still liked her voice however.

Joel also wanted Gerry to perform the phantom in a more sexy way than Gerry was orginally going to do. I haven't heard it but I was told that the his original music of the night is much better than what it is in the movie.

Patrick Wilson did a fine job as Raoul. I just didn't like the hair. It was too distracting for me.

Supposedly Hugh Jackman was considered for the role as the phantom. That would of been interesting to see Wolverine as Erik. I like Gerry but Hugh does a have a nicer voice. IMO.

Omg. My friends and I are such huge GB fans and I've got the greatest story.

So at BPA (the acting company where we take classes) I was with my friends Mimi and Alaina. Mimi called the movie theatre when she was there and asked if they would get the movie Beowulf and Grendel, starring Gerry. After she was transferred to this other person, here's how the conversation went:

Mimi: Will you guys be getting in Beowulf and Grendel soon?
Movie person: What?
Mimi: Beowulf and Grendel. it stars Gerard Butler.
Movie person: Never heard of it.
Mimi: Well I think you should get it. Because Gerard's pretty hot.
Movie person: .......
Mimi: -Hang up-

Random fact about the play: Robert Guillaume was the person who took over for Michael Crawford as the Phantom when Crawford stopped performing the play.

If you don't know who Robert Guillaume is but you've seen the movie The Lion King, he was the voice of Rafiki. He was also pretty popular with the current generation when he was on Sports Night (I believe that's right.).
