Fish win Series

Post by Aya Reiko » Sat Oct 25, 2003 10:26 pm

The Florida Marlins are your 2003 World Series Champions. Straight from the AP wire:

"Josh Beckett was no gamble at all. "

The wild-card Florida Marlins wrapped up their wild ride with an improbable World Series championship, beating the New York Yankees 2-0 Saturday night behind the strong right arm and sheer determination of their young ace."

I'd rather have the Cubs or the BoSox win it, but at least the Evil Empire (TM) didn't win it.

Added: Whoah. No one has beaten the Marlins in a postseason series.
You seem like the kind of person who'll lie.
However... this sword doesn't lie.

It wasn't the best World Series ever, but it was pretty good. I think Josh Beckett was the automatic choice for MVP, since he pitched a complete game shutout in the clinching game. To be honest, I don't think any one particular player really stood out in the entire series ... maybe Bernie Williams for the Yankees, but that's about it.

Here's another weird note about the Marlins: They've only finished with a win-loss record of better than .500 twice ... and both times they made the playoffs (as the Wild Card) and went on to win the World Series.

This is different than 1997 though ... the team will likely not be dismantled like what Huizenga did. Hopefully this means the fans will come back and support their team.

Also, it'll be interesting to see what happens with the Yankees front office ... George Steinbrenner (the owner) had said earlier in the year that he would fire the entire coaching staff if they didn't win the World Series. Even though they finished runner-up, many are expecting a huge shake-up. The bench coach, Don Zimmer, already said he won't come back. I have a feeling he won't be the only one ...

Not to try and sound like a jerk over this but...

What's with this "Evil Empire" referring to the Yankees lately? I wasn't rooting for either team, though., so maybe I just don't understand it. So the Yankees have won a lot of world series', doesn't really effect my life much if they win or lose.

Then again, I dont really watch sports anymore. And that whole argument over the guy who caught the foul ball at the Cubs game really killed my interest. I thought that crossed the line of excessive. If I were on the Cubs, I'd probably be embarassed watching what some of those people did.

First: Yeah, go FISH! (see avatar :)

Second: I completely agree with you, J. It's bewildering how the Cubs fans can be so incensed (sp?) against the fan for catching the ball (converting an out into a strike/foul), but not against the shortstop who fumbled the ball a few plays later, actually allowing the Marlins to take the lead it that game. Like it has been said before, it's not over until it's over. One thing like that should not have changed the outcome of the game so much if the Cubs were on top of it as much as they claim they were.

Well, from what I can tell, having watched replays of it, he wasn't the only one with his arm out for that ball. But I didn't see anyone throwing things at those people. But when the newspaper printed his name and address, I think that's when my interest in the world series died completely. Did the Cubs even issue a press statement about this?

Steinbrenner firing coaches is nothing new. He's done it before. I have to watch this every hear with the Cincinnati Bengals. Yeah, different sport, but same thing- players fail to win games, coaches get fired. The coach can only do so much. But players don't typically get fired, merely traded.
