Mt St Helens.

Post by RoastedTwinkies » Tue Oct 05, 2004 6:02 pm

I'm surprised no one made a topic about this! Everyone probably knows about this already since it's been all over the news lately. For those of you who are hiding under rocks, apparently, scienctists are saying that Mr St Helens is going to blow soon and that fresh magma is inside it's belly. This is because recently, the mountain threw up a lot of smoke and steam. Personally, I'm glad they're being cautious to evacuate the areas. What are your opinions?

Mt. St. Helens.....It's all I heard about for the last week and a half. So far it's errupted like 3 times. Supposively the next one will be the big one. Frankly that thought is a little creepy.

I was a few months old when it blew back in 1980. Luckily I live north of the volcano so it shouldn't have an impact on me this time either. I do feel for everyone near and south of it. It was destructive the first time, I don't want to know what kind of havoc will follow this one. I hope that everyone will be safe and that it won't take any lives this time.

The time I'm going to be super worried is when Mt. Rainier finally decides to blow. That volcano is practically in Seattle's backyard.

If it's going to blow soon, it's going to affect me indirectly. I do not live directly in the area, but the scientists did say that the wind can pick up the ash and smoke and bring it over to Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba (I'm not totally positive about Manitoba because I forget, but I do know Alberta and Saskatchewan for sure).

I live in Washington (right near Seattle actually), so I've been hearing a lot about Mt. St. Helens lately. It's erupted I think twice in the past few days, right? Neither of them were very big, though.

EEK!!! *hides*

EDIT ABOUT 2 SECONDS LATER: There have actually been tourist-y people paying money to be able to watch Mt. St. Helens and see whether or not it'll erupt again. -.-;;;;;; Dear god, people...if that volcano were to erupt like it did in 1980, those people would be dead.

Are you serious?? Who exactly are they paying anyways? Anyways, I've heard a lot about Mt. St. Helens lately, like everyone else, all over the news. Volcanic eruptions sound scary, I hope everyone evacuates.

Heh, down here in Oregon, everyone's watching the news and saying, "Aw, crap..." Seriously, it's kinda weird...the news here has been saying things like, "OMG IT DID IT AGAIN!!!!!111 THE NEXT ONE IS THE BIG ONE!!!!!!!!" *tiny poof* "!!!!! OH HOLY CRAP WE'RE GONNA DIE!!!!!!" My husband said it best when he said this whole thing reminds him of Trisha Takinowa from Family Guy:
Could this be the work of a serial arsonist? Statistics say no, but our producers say yes.
If it does blow in a big explosion again, I'm not sure what's going to happen. For one thing, they'll probably put a huge watch on it every 20-25 years to make sure it's not starting a pattern.

The last time I heard they stopped allowing tourists to watch Mt. St. Helens until further notice. The area they were watching from was 5 miles away. Like Artemis said, they would be dead if the volcano did errupt.

From what I understand about the last eruption they set up a perimiter around it that you couldn't get past. The perimiter was supposed to be in and even circle around it, which makes since... however, for business purposses (loggers and tourists) the perimiter was uneven, acctually thinest at the most active/likely to erupst point. I hope that this time they do it properly.
(I got all this info from my 9th grade Earth/Environmental class about 4 or 5 years ago).

Ok.........just for the record.........

Just because a volcano erupts, doesn't mean it's necisarrily a super dangerous thing. Kiluea (I hope I spelled that right) in Hawaii has been erupting constantly for.....what...........22 years now? It's not _THAT_ dangerous of a volcano.

The REASON volcanoes can be dangerous is because sometimes they don't erupt for hundreds of years, they turn into a regular looking mountain, and they "cork up" so to speak. When they cork up, pressure can build up to ridiculous levels. When the pressure becomes too much, they erupt and unleash a deadly pyroclastic flow (the thing that's the most dangerous about volcanoes).

Now, look at Mt. St. Helens. A whole side of it is missing. It's not really "corked up" like it used to be. It's already erupted, what, 3 times in the past few weeks (releasing some of its energy). It's not going to erupt like it did in 1980. It's not something to get TOO worried about. It might have a somewhat "major" eruption, but I highly doubt it'd be anything too terribly catastrophic.

As Ayane said (with a MARVELOUS quote XD), the media is making a much bigger deal out of this than it truly deserves.

Now, if Mt. Rainer was about to erupt (a truly "corked up" volcano), that would be something to be a bit worried about.

Also, from what I've heard about eruptions in general, they will produce lava or smoke and ash, but not both. So any wind effect toward outlying areas should be minimized. And from what I've heard about the prior Mt. St. Helens eruption in particular, it was not as bad as it was because of the breaking through of magma, but because the pressure exploded the mountain laterally--that is to say, it blew a hole in the side, directing all the force in one direction, instead of in the top, in which case the force would be dissipated generally equally in all directions.

I can't honestly say I know that much about volcanoes, as I don't live in a prone area and have never seen one erupt myself, but I had heard that volcanic eruptions were something like what Sailorasteroid-san just said. They will produce one or the other, but not both at the same time.

Well, see sig for my volcano experience :P

The one I'm talking about erupts every year, and now we're not worried about it, we're WAITING for it :D ! People go there, take back some rocks (okay, I admit it, I did lol) and admire the "show". Of course, we never really know how the eruption's going to turn out, but there have been pretty "large" ones over the past few years, that just make us hope it doesn't reach inhabited areas, if it grows larger.

Our volcano erupts almost every three months anyway lol. There's another one, the one that "made" the Island and that has been long inactive, and it could be like your Mt.Ranier if it explodes again. Except, this time, in our case, the whole island would blow up with its inhabitants o.O;;;

I have no idea who they're paying, but apparently it costs about 3 bucks to get a spot to watch Mt. St. Helens. Whatever happened to watching the news? -_____-

Yeah, as I say:
Tourist: Wow! Look at that!
*Dies*

Anyway, if any of you live in the King/Kitsap County areas (me, artemis, and DreamEmpress, I believe), King 5 news has been like, "Mount St. Helens is steaming! Look at this little scientific graph thingie! Coming up next, *insert news story* and another update on Mount St. Helens! And before we leave for our break, here's a look at Mount St. Helen's current state:

I mean, really. Shut up.

I live out on an island in Puget Sound- but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be *too* wrecked if Ranier blew its' top- because we're probably more than 50 miles away, and we're across the water anyway.
“See this butt? Yeah. Look at it. LOOK AT MY BUTT. This is all you’re getting. MY BUTT to look at it. Yeah, bet you’re sorry now, aren’t you? You’d like to see my cute fuzzy face, wouldn’t you? But all you’re getting is the BUTT. LOOK AT IT. LOOK AT MY BUTT. Sucker.”
The thing is, Henrietta has—how can I put this? Kind of a big butt. If Henrietta were a celebrity? She’d be J-Lo.
Not that J-Lo has what I would call a big butt. But others have opined that this is so. I think J-Lo has a normal, healthy butt. As does Henrietta.
