You might want to stay away from milk until your voice returns, as other people have mentioned - my high school choir director told us never to drink it before singing because it coats your vocal chords, making it more difficult to move them freely.
One more cold trick - if your muscles start aching, run a warm bath and add a chamomile tea bag to the running water. Soak for about 15 minutes - it works wonders.
Yes, I've been drinking hot tea with lemon, and it worked pretty well. Our choir director used to tell us the same thing, also he told us not to drink alcohol or soda. I've stayed away from both of those.
And wow..that bath thing sounds cool. I'll have to remember that! Thanks!

Milk always made my throat feel better, and made me sing more smoothly. Heh... I guess I'm odd. *states the obvious* >->;
Anywho, whenever I loose my voice I just drink a LOT of liquids. It will also help clear out those germs in your system, making your virus go away quicker. Oh! Peppermint candies (the red and white swirly kind, not the chalky white kind) are good throat soothers, too. Kind of like lozenges, only less medicine-y and more yummy.
And get lots of rest, or I'll get you with... uhh... *looks around room* ...my Waded-Up Paper of Doom!

Mostly what everyone else said-stay away from dairy products and soda, drink warm tea with honey, etc. Gargling salt water helps me a lot when I have a sore throat.

Soda might help. The fizz well losen the flem on your vocal cords and help clear it away, just make sure it's a soda that isn't really syrupy. Something like Ginger Ale of 7 up might do the trick.

Also, try standing in a tub of apple juice with one foot while blowing a kazoo with your left arm slightly in the air. Then look at the full moon and spin around 3 times.
You'll have your voice back in no time.

You forget about the special candle-headress she has to wear for that to work. Duh.

Crap. What was I thinking? Shame on me for forgetting something so obvious.

Reviving an old topic!
Now it's my turn. I've lost my voice. It is not fun.
Tiff, how long did it take you to get your voice back? Did any of the suggestions work for you?

I lost my voice a few days ago also, but it's mostly back now. It still breaks every now and again, but I'd say it's about 90% back.

Poor thing.
It took me about 2 days. For the first day, I couldn't say anything. The second day, I could whisper very hoarsely. By the third, I could talk again, but it was scratchy.
And I know this sounds cliche..but the best thing for me to do was just not talk. It was frustrating as hell, but it worked the best. Somteimes I would feel it coming back, but then I would talk, and it'd go away again.
Hot tea DID soothe it, though. And peppermints.

Thanks, Tiff.
It all started a few days ago with a lump in my throat that wouldn't go away no matter how much I coughed. Then my voice was gone by the middle of the night. I strained my voice too much today and yesterday because my parents have a short fuse and got frustrated when I wouldn't talk. At this point, I can't speak above a whisper.
Pepperments are awesome. But my dad ate them all just a few days ago before I lost my voice ;_;
We have ginger-ale though. So I've been drinking that instead of Coke for the time being.

Try not to drink a lot of carbonated stuff. That's better for your stomach, but not to bring back a voice. Carbonatd drinks actually can put a STRAIN on vocal chords. My choir professorin college used to tell us absolutely NO SODAS the same day of a performance.
Drink hot tea, with ginger root and lemon if you can find it.

I plan on making a stop at the mall today, so I'll see if I can find some. We have NOTHING at my house that can help me aside from cough syrup ;_;
