Lost Voice.

Does anyone have any recommendations on helping someone who has lost their voice? Any soothing remedies, or something that helps gain it back?

Due to getting a bad cold Sunday to having to raise my voice at 20 screaming 5-year olds for three days straight, I have completely, 100% lost my voice. I cannot speak above a whisper. Yesterday, I could croak out words. Today...gone. I had to repeat myself 5 times to the principal when I called her this morning just so she could understand me. I have never lost my voice before, so I'm unsure of what to do.

Help!

Rock and Rye is a good one for coughs, laryngitis, and stuffy noses (basically, colds in general). It's basically a combination of Jack Daniels and Honey. Pour 'em together and drink up.

I'll call me mummy tonight and ask her for specifics on the above thing. I don't remember how much of each thing to add.

Just rest. Don't even try and use your voice for everything. Obviously whenever you lose your voice you've done damage to your vocal chords. Just give it time to heal, and the less you try and use your vocal chords the faster they will heal.

Also, warm tea and honey (not hot). Anything that would be soothing to your throat, try. Stay away from hot drinks and dairy products.

Warm!? 0____o Well that explains why that never worked before.

When I was little this happened to me. I remember sucking on lots of coughdrops (can't remember which brand) and it kept coating my throat with medicine. In a few days my voice got well enough to use. Guru's right though. The less you use your voice, the quicker it'll heal.

If you need to talk to people, ask someone to talk for you. And if you need to talk to the kids you teach, just hit them over the back of the head in morse code. They'll understand, or learn quickly, or drop like a stone, either one's fine.

And ParaKiss, stop changing your damn avatar so much, it's giving me a headache @___< especially when I don't know who the character is.

Ohh, I hate losing my voice. I usually just drink hot drinks, but they don't help get my voice back, they just make my throat feel better. When I lose my voice, usually from over singing, my throat and mouth get all raw. Resting your voice is the best thing to do.

Like the others said, rest your voice as much as you can. Like Guru said, stay away from dairy products, especially milk.

I didn't know about the dairy product thing..okay, I'll do that...I don't think I have any honey...would lemon work okay in the warm tea? I am completely resting my voice, and I stayed home from school today becuase I CANNOT talk to those kids all day, or i'll never get my voice back.

Tiff, are you sure you lost your voice? You sound fine ~_^

Yeah lemon should work. Citrus is used a lot in cough candies so I would imagine it would work in tea.

Go buy some Buckley's cough syrup. It tastes like shit just like the commercials say, but it really helps clear your sinuses, which will make it easier for you. Maybe it's just me, I dunno, but I find it a lot harder to talk when my nose is all stuffed up.

My nose isn't really the main problem...it's blowing fine. But i have so much built up crap in my throat and chest, that I can't seem to cough up. I"m going to buy some expectorant (like robitussin) to try and help cough it all up.

And if it helps, here's a summary of my last three: Psylocke from X-men (chick with the sword), Aya from Psycho Le Cemu (*squee* Kickass J-rock band, and oh yeah, it was a guy), and now it's Rakka from Haibane Renmei (brown hair, halo) (my favourite anime).

Then don't display you're metamorphisis abitlity. I eat the skin of the men I mate with, but you don't see me parading that around.

ontopic: I would hope that it wasn't one of your students that gave it to you (because God forbid parents keep their kids home when they're sick). But how can a lost voice be contagious, unless the kid coughed on you. Make sure people don't cough on you Tiffu and get better ^_^

Well, I hope that you get better soon Tiff. I've caught a cold myself as well this week, and as we all know, colds are never fun.

I get sore throats a lot from post-nasal drip, and I find it helps to gargle with a tablespoon of salt in a glass of warm water. If you're clogged in the throat I also like Vicks rub, but a lot of people don't like that.

I *highly* dislike Vicks and mentholadium, and will gladly suffer thru my congestion than put it on. Yuck. It does work, tho, but I never use it. I can't stand the smell of it. The warm salt water trick works really well (and, I luv the yummy taste. Just don't swallow too much of it...). I also find that Lemon and Honey Hall's cough drops work really good too.

Well, the kids gave me the cold, which turned INTO laryngitis from havin to talk to them all day. And no, most parents do NOT keep their kids home. We usually have to send them home. If they don't have a fever, we have to keep them there..which is how I got sick.

I don't really have a sore throat..I just have no voice. and it's clogged. If I rub Vicks Vaporrub on my neck..that'll help??

You put it on your chest and breathe in the vapors. It's a highly effective decongestant. You might want to take a whiff first to see if you like it. It might help the voice if your vocal cords have mucous on them, but if they're strained, then you just have to let them heal themselves.

I hated Vaporrub. My parents made me use it when I got sick when I was little. I can't stand the smell.

I've found hot tea with both honey and lemon added helps, along with warm saltwater gargles every so often.

You might want to stay away from milk until your voice returns, as other people have mentioned - my high school choir director told us never to drink it before singing because it coats your vocal chords, making it more difficult to move them freely.

One more cold trick - if your muscles start aching, run a warm bath and add a chamomile tea bag to the running water. Soak for about 15 minutes - it works wonders.
