American Cartoons

Post by ParaKiss_Groupie » Wed Oct 22, 2003 9:13 pm

What kind of American Cartoons does everyone here watch? I watch Family Guy, Invader Zim (not anymore since it doesn't come on. I have to get random clips.), South Park, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.

I used to watch...um...the Justice League (the new one). Then I got tired of it so I switched to the perverted Family Guy and Futurama. I'd prefer Family Guy, Futurama starts off slow in every episode.

X-Men: Evolution is my favorite right now. It has it's blah episodes, but when it hits, it HITS. It has great writing and characterization, and some great AU re-tellings of the Marvel Universe.

The Simpons, Futurama (when I can catch it), old eps of Invader Zim, and sometimes The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (again, when I happen to catch it). I also enjoy the old looney tunes cartoons.

Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Transformers: Armada and Big O are anime, I'm pretty sure...

Teen Titans (as close to anime as an American cartoon can get, and funny as hell at times)
Justice League
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Time Squad
Samurai Jack
Looney Tunes
Beast Wars
Reboot (Okay, those last two were technically Canadian, but Canada is part of North America so it counts...)
"Tell my tale to those who ask... tell it truthfully, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest... is silence..." last words of Dinobot, "Code of Hero"
"Is that a poisonous elephant in your pocket or are you happy to see me?" ~another forum
"Monster! I''''m going to collide with you indefinitely as my limbs flail wildly about!" ~NPC, Dragon Warrior VII
"I bet you were thinking how hot it would be to see Tsunade with her gates wide open, inviting you..." ~DuneMan

I like anything that Ward Studios made. Rocky and Bullwinkle being the most recognizable. But Tennessee Tuxedo is one I'm hoping gets the DVD treatment soon.

Looney Tunes and Popeye can get me through a week. Great stuff there. Not too big on Hanna Barbera, except for Flintstones and Jetsons, as well as their Fantastic Four cartoon.

Can't remember a lot of the shows from the 80s. He-Man still has it's moments, and I intend to buy the DVDs if they ever get around to an R1 release of those. I honestly can't remember watching She-Ra, though I did get a copy of Secret of the Sword recently. GI Joe always stuck me as a bit cheesy too, but in terms of story and characters, it had some of the best. I'm looking forward to the season 1 DVD.

I'm up in the air about Transformers. Animation errors abound. I know GI Joe had them too(same animation studio) bt TF suffered far worse, and the stories seemed to rely more on self containing themselves. and so few characters ever really stuck in my mind, shy of the absolute main ones. I've avoided the DVDs.

Reah Ghostbusters, however, is the big one of that decade for me.
And I like Pac-Man and Beetlejuice.

Mot much of the early 90s stuck out to me. Shy of "Super Dave" Osborne's cartoon, I don't think many of the standard morning stuff really grabbed me. But Ducktales was excellent, and I loved Darkwing Duck. Nevermind I think I watched every episode of The Mask.

But X-Men was my favorite. I wasn't even into X-Men at the time and I still enjoyed it. And recent DVDs have shown me it was probably one of the most mature cartoons Fox ever had on.

I actually like Beast Wars, but it was a while. Still think Beast Machines is why Bob Skir should never be allowed to work again, though.

I guess I can count HBO's Spawn, even though it was "animated comic book" rather than ever meant to be a cartoon. South Park, Family Guy, and Striperella are also on my "mature list".

As for current stuff, I like Spongebob even before it became a merchandising craze. And both Kim Possible and Fairly Oddparents are very good.

Stuff I don't get too excited over- Futurama(a very funny show, but they occasionally stick in these strange political and moral messages which are rather unnecessary), X-Men Unlimited(couldn't get into it, these aren't the same characters. Watch the episode Nightcrawler off the Legend of Wolverine DVD to see how that character is, I don't care for the girl crazy teen Nightcrawler), and Spider-Man TAS(Marvel lost what made X-Men good. The depth was lost, and the animation relied too much on CG highlighting).

Transformers is an all American property. Just because it's animated overseas (like most series) doesn't mean it's anime.

And the Big O season 2 simply would have never been made if not for Cartoon Network so I'd say that makes it American enough.

Ah and I forgot Rocky&Bullwinkle, Mr. Peabody, and Beetlejuice! Great shows! I wish there were some more good girl led shows. I remember the 80's had a nice bunch of them but these days it's essentially all male. I'd list Totally Spies but that's French.

Whether Transformers was originally American or not, I am 99% sure TF: Armada is an actual anime series. I could be wrong, though. I think Starscream knows about this one, ask him.

*thwacks self for forgetting old Disney afternoon shows like Darkwing Duck, DuckTales, and their ilk*

I was never much into superheroes before (besides watching Superfriends as a kid) but I've become addicted to Justice League and X-Men: Evolution recently. I haven't as impressed with Teen Titans despite the anime inspired artwork, but it's halfway decent sometimes.

The Simpsons
Futurama
Family Guy
South Park
Scooby Doo
Spongebob Squarepants
Kim Possible

I don't catch the last two that often, but they're always amusing when I do see them.

Transformers: Armada was released previously in Japan as Transformers: The Micron Legend. It finished airing at the beginning of this year. Some people tend to think of it differently than most dubs, as the two were made in some sort of conjunction (i.e., copies of the original were sent over to the US for dubbing soon after airing in Japan), but since it did air in Japan first, I tend to think of it as a good dub of the original anime.

Actually it started airing in Japan in January.

Infact, they're only 2 episodes ahead of us due to the lonnnngg break in new episodes we had over the summer.

We'll likely be getting Energon first to.

Crap, I read my information backwards ><;

Regardless, it's supposed to be a side-by-side development of action figures and the cartoon, so it's tough to classify it as an American cartoon or a Japanese one.

How can anyone like Teen Titans? That's by far the worst DCAU series yet.

*puts up flame shield*

Which reminds me, I liked The Zeta Project.

Oooh! Zeta! I forgot that one. *marks that down*

I do like Teen Titians, but something about it confuses me. Are they trying to go after that anime dime or are they mocking the anime fad/popularity?

For me it's Justice League, Batman:The Animated Series, Superman, Batman Beyond, The Mask(S-s-s-s-smokin!!!!), Duck Dodgers.
"Oh yeah. Someone is definitely tired of breathing." ("The Main Man", Part 1)

I'm writing this Sailor Moon/Green Lantern crossover AU fic called "Emerald Sunrise". It's a hybrid of Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance, and Comedy. It's about Ami (Sailor Mercury) getting a new boyfriend who just happens to be a member of The Green Lantern Corps. I'm also throwing in some other characters from other animes and some old Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the late '60's early '70's. I'm also illustrating it as well. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

I don't know, Tempest...

However I love the series, and I just adore Starfire's voice. Actually, I think they used the anime style very well, better than some anime series imo.

*smacks self for forgetting Gargoyles*
I used to love that show, too...

Some people do consider Thundercats to be anime. I don't know if there was ever a Japanese version, though. Then again, I haven't seen the show in roughly 15 years.

Armada is technically anime. They dubbed it around the same time as the Japanese production. A lot of the early episodes have some rather bad problems keeping names straight(Jetfire called Thrust, half the Minicons being called Leader-1), either due to a rush jub on getting the NA voices or a rush in script writing.

I've also developed a new appreciation for Scooby Doo. I think it was because of the movie.

I'd also suggest tracking down the Gen 13 animated film if you can. Ebay should have plenty of copies. It was never released in the US, but the Phillipines got it on VHS(in English, Region 1), which is where my copy came from. Canada also got it on DVD, I believe, I know someone did since DVDs are out. I need to pick that one up.
