Prons: Oh anime fan stereotypes. I HATE those so much... Video gamer stereotypes are similar. I'm so glad it's only people I've seen buy into those things are on the net. If I met one in real life I'd be sure to tell them off.. Another anime fan stereotype is that they wish they were Japanese, they worship Japanese people and things, etc.

I don't know, I've come pretty close to that one...

Akarui: I don't know, not having been in France in several years, but is there an equivalent of the US 911 system? In the US, when you're in an emergency, you can dial 911 and be connected to an emergency dispatcher who can contact police, an ambulance, or the fire department if they're needed. I'd have called 911 myself in that situation, and told them, "I'm on X train, and here's the situation."

I shave my legs..just not as OFTEN as I would in the summer. But I do do it on a regular basis. I mean..who wants to walk around with gorilla legs?
Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.

Okay, OKAY! LOL!
You found me!
I'm the winter gorilla
(just cause I never kinda wear "short stuff") . Though I'll have to go through that hard experience next weekend cause for our official engagement "thing" (o.O;;;) my sweetie's taking me to a hotel where there's a swimming pool. And he wants to swim. U_U;;;;
As for the emergency thing, well, you have the classical numbers for firemen, policemen, ambulance, and I'm sure there's one like the one Ni-ban mentioned, but I don't know about it (@_@;; , I know) since it's been 21 years since I never needed it (really. I must be lucky. sort of.) . You have lots of emergency numbers anyway... ^^;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

1) On the shaving thing, I don't. I don't wear make up either.
2) Celexa...I'm on your side here, I'm from Illinois too, though I'm not going to tell where exactly for safety reasons. Would general midwest stereotypes fit here?
a) I, at least, would do poorly on a farm because I'm not athletic and you HAVE to be that (and enjoy the outdoors) or have telekinetic powers.
b) I'm a Democrat, not a Republican. (I heard that the Midwest has been turning more conservative recently)
c) I'm an atheist, not a conservative Christian.

I too, never wear makeup, with the exception of formal events. Even then, I go very light on the makeup. Why don't I bother? Because a) I'm not very good at it (at least when it comes to liquid eyeliner) and b) I just don't feel like spending the extra time in the morning to do that. I just prefer to grab my Dr Pepper flavored chapstick and run ^_^

Liquid eyeliner is too much hassle even for me, and I love makeup. I prefer a pencil eyeliner, and that's really easy to apply with an eyeliner brush.RoastedTwinkies wrote:I too, never wear makeup, with the exception of formal events. If you want to cheat and make it look like you're wearing liquid eyeliner when you're not, I learned a trick last weekend from a makeup artist for that: get a dark-colored eyeshadow, and dampen an angled brush lightly. Dip the brush into the eyeshadow, and apply. ^^ You could probably do this with an eyeliner brush too.

Back on topic, I have a few stereotypes regarding sorority women I'd like to dispel. And yes, I am a sorority member; I'm a proud member of Alpha Phi.
- We aren't all vapid. Look at our founders; in many cases our sisters were leaders in their time. That hasn't changed, despite the stereotypes to the contrary.
- We don't discriminate based on religion, race, or sexual orientation. In other words, we aren't all blonde Barbie dolls.
I won't lie and say chapters haven't done Very Bad Things in this department, especially in the past, but the tide has most definitely turned. I have a rainbow of sisters, and I'm very proud of that.
- There are many ways to join up, and formal rush as a college undergraduate isn't the only way. There are informal rush events, and in some cases, you can join after college. Some groups will allow graduate students to pledge as active members, and in other cases, you can be initiated as an alumna, though groups do tend to vary quite a bit on this point. Some groups allow alumna initiation, some only allow it in certain cases, and others do not allow it at all.
- Hazing is not a normal part of joining. I was never hazed in the least, and a chapter that is should be reported to their national HQ.
There are a few things that are true across all groups, such as secrets all members share and a special initiation ceremony*, but many of the stereotypes are untrue.
* Please don't ask me about this. I cannot and will not explain to you what goes on in this initiation ceremony. What I can say is that it's very beautiful and very special, but it is a secret.

I do want to ask, Ni-ban, what the point of a sorority actually IS, and what you do in one?

As for what we do... well, undergraduate and alumnae chapters are different in what they do. I was initiated as an alumna, so I can't speak very much about that experience. I do know the girls split their time between social events, philanthropy, and a few other projects, though.
I'm active in my alumnae chapter, and we do a lot of things. We help out the undergraduates as advisors, and by doing little goody bags and sending friendly notes from time to time.
We do a lot of charity and philanthropy work, as well. A-Phi's major philanthropy is women's heart disease awareness, prevention, and research, and our chapter does a 5k every year to raise money for that. Another project we've got planned is getting together to make teddy bears for the kids at Children's Hospital, and we have a few others in the works as well.
And some stuff is purely social, like the yearly Christmas party, or meeting for dinner out somewhere, things like that.
So, the short version is that we're a social group for women, or as Dave refers to it, "Oh, those girls that get Jen out of the house.".
http://www.npcwomen.org (the National Panhellenic Conference) www.nphchq.org (the National Pan-Hellenic Conference - these groups are historically African-American), and http://www.alphaphi.org have more information on sororities and Alpha Phi, respectively.

I don't mean to turn this into a religious debate, but here's one more to add to the thread. Just because I'm a fundamentalist, doesn't automatically mean I'm a zealot.

OK.. Here are some stereotypes that people have been throwing at me all throughout middle school and some of high school. I'm in college now. They've stopped. lol.
Most (if not all) of these're gonna pertain to being called gay.
I have long hair and people said I was gay, when I'm not.
When I was in 7th grade the Hispanics (no racial disrespect) had girlfriends and they would call me gay for that as well just because I wasn't ready for a GF at that age.
If I didn't listen to the bands they listened to they called me gay....
They used to call me gay because I didn't dress in baggy jeans...
Also: One that really ticks me off: they called me gay/fag etc because I prefer the Macintosh Operating System and an Apple Macintosh computer instead of a Dell, for example, running a flavor of Windows. They have no respect.
They just don't want to understand that there's nothing wrong with being gay...
That's all I can think of for that...
And speaking of Anime Fan S'types I have one: Not all anime is hentai and not all anime is violent etc... I have friends online whose parents won't allow them to watch ANY anime if they learn it has sex jokes or references in it.... -.- They're perfectly aware of the sex thing too...
Feel free to add more about the gay s'types and the anime fan ones.

....You do realize that they're saying "ghey," not "gay." And it has nothing to do with sexuality, it's just a slang term. -_-OK.. Here are some stereotypes that people have been throwing at me all throughout middle school and some of high school. I'm in college now. They've stopped. lol.
