The one musical that I got hooked on was the 1990 John Waters comedy "Cry Baby", starring Johnny Depp.
"After all these years, you know it's not about control. It's about trying to do everything I can. And for you, it's about setting an example. Everyone looks up to you. They listen to you. If you tell them to fight, they'll fight. But they need to be inspired, and let's face it, 'Superman'...the last time you really inspired anyone... was when you were dead." -- Batman, to Superman, Infinite Crisis, issue 1

Musicals

Post by Hobbes » Fri Jun 30, 2006 1:35 pm

It seems that a lot of us on here are fans, so name your favorites. I have loads but a few of my absolute favorites would have to Chicago, Once Upon A Mattress, and Wicked. Especially Wicked, the music just kind of speaks to you on a peronal level. Sadly, I haven't seen the stage production(yet).

Oh, I adore musicals! I want to go to the video store and rent a whole bunch of old ones, but I just can't find the time. Ones I've seen and like a lot are:

Chicago- My mother dragged me to go see it with her, and it ended up being one of my favorite movies EVER. My favorite song from that is "We Both Reached For the Gun".

Rocky Horror Picture Show- The music was what made me like this so much, and being able to go to an interactive performance was great (thank goodness they didn't question my age)! The "Time Warp" was the best in that one.

Producers- This one was iffy for me at first, but it got better. I still haven't got to see the original, which had Gene Wilder in it.

Pete's Dragon- This is considered a musical, right? I enjoyed every single song in that movie.

Ack, I know I'm forgetting about some, so these are my top 4 for now.

EDIT: Oh, my gosh, how could I forget Rent? Poor Angel! *cries*

Fiddler on the Roof- that one is so funny, sad, and it had great music.

Beauty and the Beast-I saw the stage play and it was fantastic

My school once performed Anything Goes and I really liked that one.

Sound of Music- I know I'll get made fun of for this one, but I liked the story and the music.

Oh no way, man. My aunt adores that movie, my momma bought it for her on DVD for Christmas last year. Every time it came on TV, the whole house stopped to watch it.

Hooray, good thread!

My favorites:

-Les Miserables: OMFG, from the moment my mom introduced me to the songs from this on Public Television, I was in love. It's always been my favorite, I've seen it 3 or 4 times live, and I can't get enough of it. My screenname everywhere used to be Eponine15 too, haha.

-RENT: Just got introduced to this one this year, actually, from the movie. And it has quickly become one of my favorites, maybe even to surpass Les Mis someday. I want to see it on Broadway badly!

-Little Shop of Horrors: =D Love this one. It's just so camp and humorous and twisted. The movie is great, but I like the stage version as well... especially the ending.

-Moulin Rouge: Wonderful songs, and one of the most romantic movies (if not the most) I've ever seen. And Ewan McGregor's singing, and acting in the last scene is just... wow. (And of course, the obvious him being a hottie =P). Nicole impressed me too, I didn't expect her to be so good.

-Phantom of the Opera: Classic. Can't really say much more than that, other than it's a classic for good reason. Sarah Brightman is a goddess.

-Oliver: Underrated in my opinion, the songs are great.

-Annie: Come on, how can you not love Miss Hanigan. She's fabulous. I've always wanted to play her someday in a production of it. XD This was actually the first one I ever saw on Broadway.

And I want to say Wicked, since I like the story, but I haven't heard enough of the music to say or not. All I have heard from it is Defying Gravity, but as you can see from my signature, that song has lifted me up quite a bit. :)

...and I think that's all for now, but I'm probably forgetting some!

The Nightmare Before Christmas. Danny Elfman has the most amazing voice ever. The music he composed is amazing. And Sally has to be my favorite character ever.

The Rocky Horror Picture show. Haven't seen the movie in a few years, even though I own, but I did put the entire thing on my ipod recently. What's funny is that a few years ago I took some everyday clothes from my closet and was able to put together a damn good Transalvanian costume (every said I'd never wear that shiny gold shirt. I SHOWED THEM! Mwa ha ha ha).

Phantom of The Opera. It's playing in Vancouver next month and I so badly want to see it T_T

Jesus Christ Superstar. Ted Neeley is God. This whole musical is amazing and Gethsemane is the most amazing song ever.

Fun fact about the Sound of Music. When it aired in Korea, a theatre manager thought it was too long so he cut out all the songs to make it shorter.

I don't have a whole lot of favorite musicals but I do have a few.

Avenue Q- This is my all time favorite musical. I haven't gotten to see it live yet but I really want to. Too bad NYC is so far away. At least I can listen to the soundtrack whenever I want. Avenue Q is abosuletly hilarious. I loved the characters, the humor, and the songs are just so catchy. My favorite songs are "It Sucks To Be Me," "The Internet Is For Porn", "If You Were Gay", "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist", "Fantasies Come True", and "The More You Ruv Someone."
Wicked-This is another one I haven't seen live yet but I also have heard the soundtrack for this one and I've even bought the book it was based on. I love the interesting twists it takes on the Oz story and my favorite songs from it are "Defying Gravity", "The Wizard And I", "What Is This Feeling?", and "No One Mourns The Wicked."
High School Musical- I'm not sure if this really counts here because it was a Disney Channel original movie, but from my understanding, they are making a Broadway version of it, too. The plot for this musical was simple but really cute and I abosuletly loved the ending. My favorite songs from it are "Stick To The Status Quo", "Start Of Something New", and "We're All In This Together."
"If we can''t comprehend the plan at hand, how could a higher plan make any more sense? I'd say you can only be a martyr if you know what you are dying for, and choose it"-Elphaba

"Those who made mistakes blame themselves and close their hearts. It's impossible to fix a mistake. Man can't return to the past. That's why we drink. Drunks, lushes, sliding alcohol down their throats to dilute the memories that can't be denied.-Vash The Stampede"

Okay, I finally listened to the rest of the Wicked soundtrack today while reading the synopsis, and yeah, this definitely ranks as one of my favorites. ^_^

No Good Deed = ...O_O

I definitely like Idina more as Elphaba than Maureen from RENT, hehe. But she's great as both.

-_- It was pointed out to me that we already have a musicals topic, so this topic has been merged.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Yay, the topic I started! lol. Personally, I freaking love Kristin Chenoweth!! She's my hero. She got me hooked on Wicked! I personally liked Idina better in Rent though, even though Rent really wasn't my favorite. lol, kinda' sorta' makes sense? Maybe that's just because I love Kristin so much, she just makes the show for me! I know most people are all about the green girl and "Defying Gravity" but I think sometimes when everyone likes one thing, I try to like the other! Go Kristin! lol

I recall going over posts and seeing people mentioned Little Shop of Horrors earlier. I just to comment on it! In truth, it's not one of my favorites, but I was in a production of it a while ago. I had a blast! It was my favorite show I'd ever done! Which is ironic, because out of all the shows I have done, it was the one I was least excited about. Just goes to show, things don't always turn out the way you think they will!!

I'm usually like that too, actually. (Just look at my namesake, Sylphiel, easily one of the most bashed and hated characters in Slayers fandom.) But I like both girls, and think they are very entertaining to listen to and are talented, so they both together make it for me. =D

I dunno, I just really relate to Elphie, the whole being misunderstood thing, plus having a skin condition myself, among other things. Plus, mezzo-sopranos rule. (I'm an alto myself... we don't get nearly enough bad-ass musical roles. ^_~) And realizing you need to take care of things on your own sometimes, despite what people think of you or want, is something I've definitely come to terms with lately.

As far as Maureen goes, most of my friends who've seen Rent say she reminds them of me, which is probably why she irritates me so much. ^^;; I see a lot of the traits I like less about myself in her. =P Over the Moon was pretty amusing the first couple times I heard/saw it in the movie, but after that it just gets so annoying it makes me wanna strangle her, lol.

Hmm, I can see where you are coming from. I feel like I can relate to Elphaba a lot more than I can to Galinda actually. I certainly don't feel popular! lol.I like the things that Elphie stands for, and I think that "The Wizard and I" is a killer number! I just think her character is a little unexciting. Not boring, just not anywhere near as fun as Galinda, and how crazy she is! Even though I can't relate to her, she is such a fun and silly character! I'm a little partial to opera too, so that probably has a lot to do with it! :D

As far as Rent goes I think Idina is wonderful! I'm not a huge Rent fan, but for me Idina totally rules in the part of Maureen! She's crazy and fun! It just seems like a more exciting character. I also I think she was the best person in Rent! Not that others weren't good, but she seems to steal the show whenever she's on!

*snickers* I am so renting that movie now!

Oh, yes, and I forgot to ask; has anyone seen the sequel to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Shock Treatment? I've never been able to find it, and I'd really like to see it. They have new people playing Brad and Janet, but Patricia Quinn and Little Nell come back.

I have. It's not worth it--the pitch is more forced than in the original, the final song makes less sense than "Super Heroes" (What are they going to do?) and Barry "Dame Edna Everage" Humphries isn's as memorable as Tim Curry (although Richard O'Brien and Charles Gray also return). Also, all the gleeful perversity is gone.

I know it's a bit late to be saying this but oops! I didn't know there was already a topic like this. *hits self with the off-topic stick*

I saw a bit of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was...weird to say the least. But Tim Curry rocks in that movie. Do some Disney movies count? They remind me of musicals, some of them even are now.

What?! Three pages and yet still no mention of Springtime for Hitler?

My all time favorite musical is Les Miserables. I really want to see this with Colm Wilkinson but I guess I'll just have to settle with my CDs. One of my favorite songs is Stars. I did get to see this on stage for my 16th birthday.

Second would have to be The Phantom of the Opera. Saw this in grade school on a school trip to Toronto.

While my high school sucked in many ways, the theater wasn't one of them. The English teacher in charge of directing the plays and musicals is excellent. They have on put many excellent plays and musicals. He also directs the community theater so it also is excellent. From the HS musicals I've seen, I liked The Scarlet Pimpernel. For the CT, Brigadoon and Fiddler on the Roof. They got an absolutely great guy for Tevye.
