musicals
Hey, does anyone else here like musicals? If so, what are some of your favorites? I like, "Gypsy" "Les Miserables" "West Side Story" "My Fair Lady" "Miss Saigon" "42nd Street" "Grease" and a lot more, honestly, I have way too many fav's to name.
I love Musicals!
Sound of Music is one of my favorites, simply becuase I love the semi-historical story behind it. The songs are catchy, and I'm a hopeless romantic XD;
My Fair Lady is a fun one, but the ending sort of pisses me off. The King and I makes me cry...and Cats is just plain gorgeous.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

-Ooo, musical! Is that good?
-YES! Singing, dancing, and acting, you have to do all three!
-Ooo.
I like going to them, but they're so much money, so usually I'll only go with family or friends. Depsite having never seen them, I've got the soundtracks fromPhantom and Les Miz, and all the songs are great. The last one I actually saw was Urinetown. I didn't think it would be good, but then they opened with this exchange:
Character 1:You don't want to give away too much too soon. Nothing kills a play like too much exposition.
Character 2:What about a bad title?
From there it turned into a brilliant satire of the perpetual debate between socialism and capitalism. It's finished on Broadway now and touring, so if it's in your area, I recommend seeing it.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

It's weird, but when usachan said musicals, I didn't think of anything but the theatre. If we're adding movies, then there are so many more: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; Mary Poppins, heck, any of the Disney musicals; The King and I, yes; and The Wizard of Oz. Also, I love love LOVE Gilbert and Sullivan.

*is a musical whore*
Gypsy is my absolute favourite. Ever. The gimmick song makes me fall over laughing, the "I'm a pretty girl, Mama" line makes me cry, and "Rose's Turn" sends me into a fit of rage and tears.
Next is Hairspray. Harvey Firestein plays the funniest chick ever. Plus, I love the songs. "You can't stop the motion of the ocean or the stars in the sky..."
Les Miserables comes next. "On my Own" makes me cry, because I like Eponine more than I do Cosette. "Master of the House" is one of the funniest songs I've ever heard. In fact, almost all of the songs are great. Plus, Fantine is one of my favourite literary characters.
Wicked. Kick. Fucking. Ass. I've read the book, seen clips from the play, and bought the soundtrack. And I repeat: Kick. Fucking. Ass.
The Rocky Horror Show. It is, technically, a musical. And fucking hilarious. I <3 it.
Yeah... I like them all. I'm a musical freak, and if I don't stop now, I'll have listed like, 10 pages worth. ^^

I hear musicals and it takes me back to high school. I was in Hello Dolly and Anything Goes. Both were totally awesome shows. I later saw Fiddler on the Roof. Also quite good.
I grew up on Disney musicals. Happiest Millionaire was my favorite. You go Tommy Steele! All the Alligators were cool. The maid freaking out when she starts to get carried off on the back of one....too funny. I did the opening song for my final in Musical Theater class.
Who didn't love Bedknobs and Broomsticks? Angela Lansbury was so awesome. I have the extended version.
I loved the original Annie. Nothing can top the 80's release of it. Carol Burnett was too cool as a mean drunk who was in charge of orphans. Tim Curry looked so good as did Bernadette Peters. Although my man was Geoffrey Holder, he just looked hot in general. The turban just added a nice flare.
Labryinth had a lot of songs in it....could I count that as a muscial of some kind?

I did, though I wish
she had stayed a witch.
David Tomlinson was so wonderfully English in both that and Mary Poppins. It's a shame he didn't do more or the same fare.DreamEmpress wrote:Who didn't love Bedknobs and Broomsticks? Angela Lansbury was so awesome. I have the extended version.
Of course you can, and it's a fine one.Labryinth had a lot of songs in it....could I count that as a muscial of some kind?
It is an acquired taste. I haven't seen the play but have seen the movie in the theater. It matters a lot if you're a fan of the sci-fi movies mentioned in the theme song. Which I am. And also a fan of kinky sex.Tiff wrote:am I the only one who doesn't like Rocky horror? It annoys the crap out of me...Except for the transvestite song. I like taht =D
And I thought of another set of great musicals: those done by the Muppets. Though the later ones, Muppets from Space and Muppet Treasure Island, weren't so good. I loved The Muppets take Manhattan, best NY movie ever. It's a shame Kermit the Frog never got an oscar nomination; I blame racism among the Academy. ^_^

May I join the majority opinion here?
Last musical I saw was the concert version of Sweeney Todd (which I had previously seen as an actual musical a few months before). Fav. song from that? The History of the World. Actually, the musical was kinda boring up until that song.
The musical I saw prior to that in the theatre was the ABBAsolutely fabulous Mamma Mia.
But my absolute most fav musicals would have to be My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music and Grease. I also like Rocky Horror, but unfortunately have never had the chance to go to see the screening (due to the fact that it never bloody plays down here).

I love musicals! <3 It's so hard to pick a favorite. Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and My Fair Lady are certainly up there, and so is Cats - I'm shocked that no one has mentioned that one yet!
As for what I want to see...I'm still kicking myself for missing The Producers when that was in town, and I really want to see The Lion King before it ends its run in Boston.
As for movie musicals, Moulin Rouge is my favorite, hands-down and no contest. Baz Luhrmann, I love you. I really want to see his version of La Boheme.

La Boheme is funny as hell. The songs, when translated to English, crack me up. Man: "I will love you forever." Woman: "My shoes are too small." It's so weird that I just die.As for movie musicals, Moulin Rouge is my favorite, hands-down and no contest. Baz Luhrmann, I love you. I really want to see his version of La Boheme.
Um, that's not the original Annie. The original Annie starred Shirley Temple, and was released long before the 80s. ^^;;loved the original Annie. Nothing can top the 80's release of it. Really? I thought "Annie" was first done in the 70's on Broadway? I didn't think it was that old, but I could've been wrong. Speaking of which, that show sorta' bugs me for some reason, some of the songs are good, like "Tomorrow" "Maybe" and "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" but put it all together it's almost like a review, and sorta' doesn't seem to go together. Am I the only one who thinks this?ParaKiss_Groupie wrote: Um, that's not the original Annie. The original Annie starred Shirley Temple, and was released long before the 80s. ^^;;
"Phantom of the Opera" will always be my favorite musical. I've seen it twice live and it always makes me tear up from it's beauty. I thought I'd hate "The King and I" but I gave it a chance and cried at the end after loving it all the way through.
I loved the new "Annie" too, but that's probably because I love Kathy Bates and Alan Cumming. "My Fair Lady" is a HUGE favorite of mine because the movie has Audrey Hepburn in it. *me LOVES Audrey* Rex Harrison is cool too, but everytime I see him in that movie now, I think of Stewie in "Family Guy." (Not that it's a particularly bad thing, but it makes me giggle.)
