Star Wars DVD discussion, or has George Lucas succumbed...

Post by DuoTheShinigami02 » Sun Aug 01, 2004 1:35 pm

..to the Dark Side?

Just in case if you didn't know, the old-school Star Wars (Episodes 4, 5, and 6) will be finally released on DVD on September 29 (correct me if I'm wrong).

But for better or for worse, only the Special Editions will be released, not the theatrical versions.

And from what I see everywhere, it appears that Lucas has indeed succumbed to the Dark Side, as it was the same Lucas that would go on to release the decent-but-no-cigar prequels.

What do you guys think?

I've seen every Star Wars except for Attack of the Clones, and I'm not really a fan of the series. They were cute, but I couldn't really get in to the alternate reality that was created. And with the exception of James Earl Jones, the acting was pretty bad, IMO.

So I see no problem with releasing special edition DVDs only, and the badness of the episodes 1 and (from what I've heard) 2. I just don't pay attention, and it doesn't seem a big loss to me.

But if I were a fan, I probably would be pretty pissed at the way the series has gone downhill. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of FX has been done since Empire Strikes Back, and the plots and new characters have been pretty saccharine ever since the Ewoks showed up. I'd have to say that Lucas "sold out" a while ago, making the series about toys and ticket sales instead of making good movies.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

I won't be buying the Stars Wars DVDs because of some news I've heard about Return of the Jedi's DVD release: Several message forums of video and STAR WARS websites have confirmed that Sebastian Shaw has been removed from the "ghost trio" at the end of JEDI and replaced by Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker. As well, a scene showing the citizens of Naboo, consisting of both humans and Gungans, celebrating the death of the Emperor has been included in the montage of locations after the destruction of the second Death Star.

Ok, this is just stupid. Return of the Jedi was always my favorite of the Star Wars movies and I thought it was fine just the way it was. Enough with the freaking special editions, George! Doesn't he realize so many people want to have the original versions of the Star Wars movies on DVD? I know I want them. He could then have the new footage as extras on the DVD and if he wanted to change that scene at the end of Return of the Jedi, he could use the alternate angle button on DVD player remote controls or something, so we could switch back and forth between both versions.

I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but I do own the VHS of episodes 4,5 and 6 and love them. I think they were new editions because their was a lot of added CGI, but it didn't bother me because I was young. The new ones piss me off because they're ALL CGI. It seems like the entire thing was filmed infront of a green screen. I don't mind a little CGI when it's absolutely nessecary, but I hate it when it's over done.

But if he's going back and adding more crap to the original movies, then I'll be damned if I'm going to get the boxset.

I have the 3 movies on Laserdisc, and there is no way in HELL I am going to get DVD's with about 15 minutes of more random crap. for pete's sake... I've already seen one horrid scene: Before Han takes off at Mos Eisley in the first movie, THERE IS A SCENE WITH JABBA ASKING HAN WHY HE SHOT GREEDO!!!!!!!! If there is a price on Han's head from JABBA, why the HELL would Jabba be asking him why he shot the stupid rodian???

Lucas: You have become money hungry. Go with Spielburg and imitate South Park. Mainly when you make the re-release of Raiders of the Lost Ark and die because it's so horrid. ugh.

Well, from what I've seen, rumor has it that Lucas might do an "Ultimate Edition", which adds Padme to any of the original movies.

Here on IMDB is a list and discussion of the changes to the original trilogy. A few of these changes I think I might like (and by few, I mean maybe two or three). The rest sound like crap.

What in the name of GOD?

Okay. I'm not a big fan of star wars in general. It's good, fun entertainment, but I didn't care for the episode 1 and 2 very much...but I did like the original trilogy.

And now they've added all of this shit? It's completely pointless, IMO. Of course, I wouldn't have gone and made episodes 1 and 2 ANYWAY -_-;

Blah. No money shall be wasted on this. *Kicks back and watches her old, 80's VHS's that were copied off of the TV*

Their's one line on that board that made me worry
Next thing you know he'll change all of Henson's wonderful puppets in labrynth to CGI crap and digitally add Justin Timberlake as Jareths jive-talking assistant. He must be stopped
Lucas will get a bullet to the nuts if he touches Labyrinth. He'd probably end up cutting any seen with Jareth's spandex to make it more "kid friendly" T_T

The idea of changing some of the music seems like a good idea though, as long as it's done right and doesn't suck.

I saw that line too, and I thought it was too funny. Fortunately, there's already an unsullied DVD of Labyrinth out there.

Are you still talking about Labyrinth, or are you back on Star Wars. If the former, I must disagree with you. There's not a single note in Labyrinth that needs to be changed.

No no no no no no no no NOOO!!.... ... ...that would be blasphemy ^_^ I meant the music changes in Star Wars. The line here
02. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin's Theme plays in the background and then it turns into the Imperial March as he talks about Vader.
That's what I was refering to, I like that idea.

Are you guys familiar with with webpage?

www.originaltrilogy.com

They're running a petition to try to "bring Lucas back to the Light Side"
and have him release the theatrical cuts on DVD.

As for my opinion, I'm not a hardcore Star Wars fan, but I do think that he (Lucas) has turned his back on the fans.

And I've seen that because of him, we won't be seeing an Indiana Jones 4 anytime soon.

Personally, I never liked the old trilogy that much, and I actually like the new trilogy better (I liked Episode I and II)........So, I don't really care that he's adding in new footage, but I do agree that he should have the original versions available for those who want to watch them that way.

I am a fan of Star Wars and i have to say that these new additions would be interesting to see but i would have to say that it degrades the story a bit. I am lucky to have the original, remastered and episodes 1 and 2 so i can compair them all. In the remastered the story stayed the same but there were only some graphical things that were changed with a few not so drastic changes to the movie. I can't say if i agree with the new versions but until i watch it my opinion is: Want to see it, not a good idea.

Wow it's ridiculous to go back and change all those things for a DVD release. I liked the original Star Wars trilogy just the way it was. Especially Return of the Jedi. Oh well it's not as if I was plainnin on buying these DVDs. My brother already has that remastered version of the trilogy which was released a few years ago on VHS.

And Episode 1 and 2... Both were disappointing but Episode 2 was ok. I atcually watched it again on tv.

think of it this way: These movies were made in the late 70's/early 80's. and you need to REALIZE that. and the music IS GOOD ENOUGH ALREADY. AND YOU DON'T NEED TO SHOW USELESS CHARACTERS IN THE END SCENE. MYSTERY IS GOOD. and you don't have to make everything PAINFULLY obvious. *X_X* that thing is NEVER going to be played in my house... NEVER.

MYSTERY IS GOOD. and you don't have to make everything PAINFULLY obvious.
Lucas is going to turn it into a bad anime dub. I can just picture him adding extra lines in episode IV.

Vader:"Luke, we will meet again soon, and then we shall battle and I will reveal a shocking secret to you that has to do with how we're related, but I will spoil no more. All I'll say is that the secret rhymes with 'bother".
