Top ten Icons

I dunno I read this and while im glad they didnt really put an actual number order to some of them, you could tell by the order that they were saying that some outweighed others. I just dont know I think Link is a bigger Icon then Solid Snake though I do love the metal gear series as well. I know why Laura Croft is on there big rating asside *boobies cough* I just wonder what other people think of the top gaming icons. I know Mario wins hands down heck that was the first game I ever owned the second being LOZ. But the first game I played was Pacman and they put down Ms Pacman as better hehe. Guess we girls can rock the 8bit Kasbar </bad joke>. I liked the article even if I didnt agree with some of the comments. I like Cloud's name so there ;p Just wanted to see what other gamers thought.

I actually agree with a whole lot of the list, but it seems to me that the rankings are skewed toward the later generation of games. I would have put Samus in the VIPs and relegated Freeman to the "honorable mentions"; if anything, Samus showed us that girls really CAN kick ass, especially when their sexuality is not exploited in the course of the game XD

Ms. Pacman goes above Pacman because, IMO, hers were much more difficult games and really helped to solidify the franchise in the hearts of the arcade gamers. Lara, despite her physique, is notable for, again, helping to bring the mid-90s gaming to where it was, and helped to bring the Playstation up from its newbie beginnings to compete rather well against the N64 (and Dreamcast, I think?)

Lest I forget one terrible omission: needs more paddle from "Pong".

I think lara croft could have been dropped... from what I've heard, Tomb Raider is basicly exploit pixels...

As for teh others... Yes, Samus should be on there. Definately... maybe more of the classic characters than the newer ones... (Kratos??)

-_- Guys, despite the fact that Lara Croft is OMG BIG BOOBIE EXPLOITATION, she's still a very notable and recognizeable video game icon. MOst people know exactly who she is, and for the reasons Starscream mentioned, she SHOULD be ont here.

I was just making a joke about Laura Croft I mean boobs asside you dont get two or three movies made about ya if your not an Icon. I just think Samus should have been up there to if they are going to site chick icons. I also think if they are going to put Ryu and Ken where the heck is Chung Li? cause she was the only street fighter I used lol. I liked the list though all in all it did have enough icons from back when I started playing but I do agree with Starscream that it seemed that a few of the pics were geared to reach newer generation players over the real long haul characters. I mean I can under stand why Solid Snake was picked cause heck I sat with my friends during a full marathon of Metal gear solid, sons of liberty and snake eater. But Donkey Kong should have not just been a mention in my opinion im sure people still recognize that monkey man all over the world.

Meh, too many fairly recent icons for a top 10 list. Maybe if they specified in the past 5 - 6 years I could agree more with this listing, but seeing Master Chief and Kratos on such a list when they've been in only two and one system generations respectively, with them being the most recent generations, is something I can't agree with. I would easily replace both of the with Samus Aran and Mega Man in a heartbeat. Both have been around since the 8-bit era and have played key parts in the evolution of the industry. While the Halo and God of War franchises have had good success, I wouldn't say either star character is icon-worthy yet, though Master Chief does come close despite my dislike of the game. I would debate Gordon Freeman, slightly disagree with Ms. Pac Man since I don't think just because her game was slightly better means she's more worthy of an icon status as Pac Man. Hell, Pac Man was the very first video game character, setting the groundwork for the licensing of video game characters for markets, cementing his spot in gaming history. I see a good debate coming on about which of the two deserves it more.

I don't want to say this list was poorly made, because other than what I noted above, all are candidates to be on such a list. And I do like some of the random facts. However, if I were to take on a task of a feature such as this, I would do some research and give more that a short few sentences. With a title such as this, I would think that people expect solid reasoning for the choices with some details about why they were chosen, some examples of groundbreaking games they were in, and what special thing they brought to the industry as a whole. I would give no more than three paragraphs per character, and for the honorable mentions, around the short paragraphs they gave to their winners up to a full paragraph.

Overall, I'm pretty unimpressed. The shell is solid enough, but there's no filling. This would be fine for a lesser known site, but a site as big and popular as Yahoo, it's very disappointing.

unfortunately alot of the "Top" list online have been like this. Ive seen top musician lists that blantantly cater to the younger folks as well. Something like the top 20 wildest bands. They put Britney spears high on that list. So ive learned to lose respect for alot of these lists.

I agree with ya Dan I think someone who really has a passion for games should have maybe written the article maybe then it wouldnt have felt like it was just out to please everyone. I will say this I do agree about the whole Mario thing I mean when I was a kid and it came out I would have never thought the game would still be around when I started having kids. Thats true staying power and thats what that list was missing the fact that these icons arent just there because of game play and money making, they are around cause they have the staying power to span generations.

Cause lets face it there are alot of money making games out there that I hope never become Iconic. I know alot of people will say boo but Im just not into the whole GTA and I was sure as hell glad none of that got on this list. It maybe a big seller and controversial enough to get on the news with antics like secret sex scenes. But to me Im hoping that the game doesnt end up being strong 20 years down the road.
