Nintendo Revolution Official Name Released......

Post by AnimeGuru0 » Thu Apr 27, 2006 1:14 pm

I present to you......

Wii.

Yeah, I'm not freaking kidding. Wii.

I'm not even going to comment on all the things wrong with this name. I've put up a poll so everyone can rate the name.

BTW, The Nintendo Revolution (now the Wii) is the next generation console, the successor to the gamecube.

How the hell did they come up with that name in the first place? Have a bunch of letters on the wall and throw darts at them and see where they land? And why did the person who signed off on the name think it was good one?

All I have to say is, there is nothing COOL about having a "Wii". That's definately not going to help anybody in the ladies department. Freak, Why didn't they just name it "Dungeons and Dragons World of Warcraft Everquest Elvin Box of Magic Level 57 Hitpoints Basement!!! =D!!!" At least then I'd have at least a chance of getting a girl within 50 feet of my house.

I just don't understand how this name went through TWO boards of directors on two sides of the ocean and NOBODY said "Umm, I think this is a bad idea........" I can understand in Japan them saying "This is a good name," but "Wii" just has way too many connotations that are just bad in English. I just think of someone urinating. In fact, in England "Whee" or however those brits spell it, I hear is slang for "Piss" and is somewhat vulgar. Yeah....nice one.

I already signed an online petition, not that that will do much.

I wouldn't count on that. At least you would have less of a chance of it being misinterpated. "You want me to play WHAT at your house!? Pig!!" SLAP

LOL.

Poor Bob. The key is you need to find a girl who's equally into game geekery. Rare, but we do exist. ^_~

And... as for the name...

Yeah. Whatever they were smoking when they came up with this, I want some.

I don't see much wrong with it. It's a little more gimick-y than Playstation 3 or Xbox 360, but it's cute. And Nintendo is rapidly becoming the cute game system as opposed to the serious one.

OT, is this the first poll we've had on the forums?

...
(Counts off another ten... and another)
...
To hell with this. I'm going to have to type while I'm laughing...

...What in blazes were they thinking when they came up with that?! Is it an acronym or something? At least "Revolution" was a decent name, even if it was the codename. Are they not allowed to use the codename when it's clearly superior?

And this was the same console with the strange-looking controller that everyone was making fun of. Even Nintendo Power magazine was making comments on how you could conceivably use it to beat up/strangle your friends if they beat you in the game. Was that not enough punishment? This is the kind of mistake that breaks you as a company. Why would you spend three years-plus to design and build your one major hope for corporate survival, and then give it a name so idiotic?

I'd like to see all the companies try to rationalize away the stupidity of the name, the way they did with the controller (which you can tell they're still having doubts about).

I'm foreseeing massive overusage of the old "rose by any other name" line by the diehard fans. So prepare yourselves now, while you still have a couple of seconds!

...And that's "My Two Cents".
Three quotes I like:

"Smart. Beautiful. Mercurius Twin."
- The "Sloganize" website

"Stop that, you! You're an accessory."
-Tsukino Usagi (to Luna, ep. 6)

"Stop the clapping! YOU'LL KILL US ALL!!"
- Professor Frink

Actually, the controller is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Yeah, at first glance you're like "what the hell....." but the endless possibilities with it since it is a motion capture device is just amazing. Plus, for more traditional games they're releasing a traditional "shell" controller, which I'm assuming will be similar to the gamecube controller, so it's a win-win situation as far as controllers are concerned.

But the name...........Freak the name is awful.

"Hey mom! Can I play with my Wii today??"

"O_O;;;;; NO OF COURSE NOT GO TO YOUR ROOM!"

"Hmph! Fine. I'll just go and play with Roger's Wii!"

"O_O!!!!! *SPANK*"

And I've heard a lot of people say stuff like "Well, it's like iPod. Before there was an iPod, nobody would ever dream of that name."

No. Wii is nothing like iPod. When you hear the word "iPod", you don't immediately think of the male genetalia. You don't think of someone urinating. End of story.

Does anyone have a picture of the controller?

And this little console went Wii Wii Wii all the way back to Japan.

You know something's wrong when it sounds cooler to say "Wanna play some games on my Atarii?" then "Wanna play some games on Nintendo's new Wii?"

I've finally gotten over the shock value of "Wii" and have just accepted it....I suppose we're going to have to change our vocabulary and the way we say things so that things don't sound *cough* suggestive when we talk about it........

But Nintendo did do one thing right..............They definately got everyone talking.

I'd have to say I'm more concerned with the controller shape and the system itself than with the name. I bought a Gamecube because for a while, it seemed better for the sports games I play. Now, the PS2 has caught up with that and I barely use the cube. I don't see myself buying the Wii because, really, what games do I need it for? Here is an article that takes it apart. Specifically, points 6 and 7 of that article ring true for me.

.............And like I said, the controller issue is a null point. The reason? Also like I said, the Wii will have a traditional controller, so far referred to as the "Shell". No one has seen the shell yet (maybe E3) but the shell is a traditional controller, so you, nor developers, will necisarrily be forced to use the more "revolutionary" controller if they want to make a traditional game.

And I don't understand the point that was made in that article about "Nintendo not wanting you". Yeah, Nintendo is trying to break into a more mainstream audience that doesn't solely include fanboys. It's called "business". That doesn't mean they're abandoning nintendo loyalists. The DS is marketed towards a more general audience, that doesn't mean I haven't had lots of fun with it.

The controller is a symptom, and even if there is a regular one, will there be games where the lack of the remote-style game will hamper you? Like with the PS, if you don't have the controller with the analog sticks, you can't play Katamari Damacy and Tony Hawk 3 screws up the camera. I'm more worried about the move away from traditional games toward more interactive stuff that no gamer really wants to play. If they can do both, great, but I'd rather see more of what Nintendo did best, the semi-cute Mario and Pokemon and such games.

That being said, I think it's always wrong when a company sacrifices the intense fans for the proletariat. People who care are more important than people who just want to buy.

True, true. Though I'll bet most third party devs will balk at the Wii. It's less powerful than the competition, and the controllers has less buttons.

Simply put, Nintendo is really setting itself up for failure. It's got a gastly name. It's underpowered. It's got a screwy controller very few would want to develop for. It lacks the bells and whistles the others will have (especially PS3's Blu-ray).

My prediction: The status quo continues on. PS3, barring a major screw-up, will continue to dominate the market everywhere. The 360 will be a distant 2nd in the US and Europe. The Wii will be a very distant 2nd in its native Japan.
You seem like the kind of person who'll lie.

Actually I hear that the blu-ray technology

1- is making the PS3 SUPER expensive and
2- Is going to make it a pain in the ass for developers.

And also, the Wii is underpowered by what standard? The Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 all are run on different motherboards, different processors, different everything. It's like comparing apples to oranges to bowling balls. Yeah, the PS3 might have the fastest whatever, but how good is going to have a super fast processor if the system itself isn't effecient? The bottom line is, it's too early to say anything about ANY system being "overpowered" or "underpowered". And if the last wave of consoles (and handhelds) have taught us anything, it's that specs really mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (with the least impressive systems in both the handheld (the DS and GBA) and the console market (PS2) both dominating hardcore).

Basically, what it really boils down to, is how easy a console is to develop for. If the Wii is really easy to develop for, we're gonna see some awesome games for it, if it's a pain to develop for, it's gonna tank, but looking at Nintendo's track record, they've CONSISTANTLY always had the easiest platforms to develop for. And frankly, in my oh so humble opinion, I think the controller is going to kick some major ass. Nintendo has rarely ever let us down when it comes to innovative new things. They have almost always been the first on the scene with many awesome innovative items (virtual boy aside), such as analog controller, rumble features, 4 ports, shoulder buttons, wireless controllers (debatable), I could go on, and they've all worked great. I think this new motion sensor controller is going to work great too. And guess what, if you don't like the new controller, get over it. You can use the more traditional controller that they're releasing and games that use that (I feel like whenever I make this point that there's going to be a TRADITIONAL controller, it falls to deaf ears.....)

But anyways. Back on topic, the name is still weird. But name aside, the system has potential to be freaking awesome, and blow 360 and PS3 out of the water (until of course, they steal the motion sensor design if it turns out to be a huge hit).
