Soul Calibur

What is your favorite Soul Calibur Game. Mine is 2 it is kinda cheap with a lot of unfair moves but I rock with Link in the Gamecube version.

I haven't played 3 yet... but I was pretty good at 1 in the arcade, and less so at 2, but 2 was probably still my favorite. I've only played 2 on the PS2.

I'm awful at SC2 in the sense that I could never memorize all the moves, but I guess I'm pretty good at just mashing the buttons ^^; I'd have to say my favorites are Nightmare (OMG so cheap XD) and Raphael (he's a badass).

I'm fairly good at any of them, generally there's enough hidden moves and tricks to make the game seem like real fighting. I'm best with Xianghua or Seung Mina.

My all time favorite is Soul Calibur 1. It's the reason I bought a Dreamcast, and so good that it got me back into fighting games. I also loved Soul Blade when it was new, and Soul Calibur 3 is addictive even in single player. it's mostly because of the Create a character mode. SC2 was somewhat of a letdown though

As for my best character, it varied in each game. My favorite character is Ivy. She's my favorite fighting game character, period. but she's only my best in SC2 and 3. In SB, it was Sophitia and in SC1, it was Taki.

got the GCN version of SCII... played it, unlocked everything, havent' touched it since. kinda over-hyped... I prefer SSBM over it. However, I see attractions. ... very many... because I'm a GUY...

I know a lot of people who favor Ivy. I think she hearkens back to the Street Fighter II days, when the key to victory was to know long and intricate button combinations. For that reason I don't care for her and when I get her by random select, tend to play her in Xianghua mode.

Yea, I'm not particularly great with Ivy (I was way better with Taki, in SC1), but I love her character and design and well,

My best friend who had the game liked using her best too. I teased him about it, especially with her corny little "I am the wind!!11!" etc. victory speeches =P

Haha. . . The first thing I do with any SoulCal game is to go into the options and turn on Japanese audio, just to avoid things like that.

lol the victory speeches were still corny in Japanese. they just pull it off better.

They weakened Ivy a bit in SC3 and made her strategy to use her more difficult. Before you could do many of her moves from any of her stances. But then in SC3, they made it so that most moves are assigned to a specific stance. They also took out one of the stances she gained in SC2. Fortunately for me, they took out the just frame (means you gotta time the button presses) for one of her nicer moves, making that easier. In SC2, she was insanely powerful though.

Has anyone else played the first game Soul Blade/Soul Edge? Despite it not having "Calibur" in its name, it's part of the series. Seems like many fans started with Soul Calibur.

I played Soul Blade once, or as we called it, Bouncy Fighter. It played like a stripped version of SoulCal. That's the thing about video games, as opposed to movies or TV--generally sequels are an improvement on the original, not a letdown.

I agree with you as far as a first sequel is concerned. (like the improvement from SB to SC) The second is almost always better than the first. But even the most long running series go downhill in a game or two.

I still consider Soul Blade my second favorite in the series, although I haven't played in forever. I have to look at how much I enjoyed it and the impression it gave me when it was fresh.

But one non-gameplay related thing I missed in the later games was all those music track options. I LOVE the Soul Blade OSTs. Namco got lazy with the music later on in the series (and Tekken). They used to always do an Arcade OST and Console OST. SB had these and another one. Khan Super Session or something

Hehe, I played SC2 in the arcade for the first time the other day. I had only played it on PS2 previously.

I used Ivy and got to Stage 7.

Just recently got to play 3 in the arcade for the first time. So far I've only used Ivy, Tira, and Amy for very briefly.

I got my arse handed to me when using Amy. I still apparently am pretty good with Ivy. Seems like Tira is pretty cheap (XD), but holy crap do I want her hoolahoop thing. It's awesome. =P

Sylfie's right on who she is, but she is available as a semi-playable character. Though unlocking her can be a bit of a chore.

The long, but easy way--
Play 1200 battles

The not so long, but annoyingly difficult way--
Fight her in Tales of Souls (each character has a different route to her) to unlock the "Beloved (Easy)" Soul Arena Mission. Beat "Beloved (Easy)" to unlock Amy.
If you played SC3, you should know the AI has a 6th sense on how to perfectly counter you and be annoyingly cheap. Amy in ToS is one of those who takes that to new levels. Not to mention all of her attacks (except throws) will heal her as you take damage.

Well, what I've found is that when it gets cheesy, I can get cheesy right back, by picking Voldo, giving him a weapon with guard damage, turning my back, and just using the horizontal strike. They have a lot of trouble dealing with it.

Though based on her hairstyle, I expect her to say, "I, Amy, am going to deflect everything you do and I don't care." (Excel Saga manga reference)
