Beat Super Mario Bros 3 in 11 minutes!!

Post by peachvampiress » Thu Oct 14, 2004 9:20 pm

I found this on a website and found it amazing. Some guy beat Super Mario Bros 3 in 11 minutes. It's pretty cool to watch, but I don't know if I believe. Some of the moves look a little suspisions to me. What do you think?

I've seen this before and I've heard it was computer-edited, but you know what? It looks plausible. I don't see any moves you could say are impossible. Even if he just played most of it, the man is a god. The way he just casually bounces his way to 99 lives during the forced-scroll boards, and the way he stutter-steps to get a mushroom card to acoid the time delay of getting 5 more lives, and the way he pounds Bowser with fireballs like Neo emptying his machine gun in The Matrix. It's like he's mocking the game. A thing of beauty any way you slice it.

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

It's Super Mario BROS. 3, not World 3. Fixed that minor error since I'm anal like that when it comes to video games, especially the possible best game of all time. ^_~

Back on topic, I downloaded that video sometime last semester, and damn is that guy good. I honestly don't believe it was computer edited, the way that guy played, they definetly knew excatly what they were doing, like the guy who completed all of Metroid Prime in 1:37 at 100% on normal mode. Some people just really kick ass like that and devote hours upon hours to show off their godly skills.

*agrees with Dan about it being the best game ever* Damn! How could I make such a blashphemous mistake T_T :goes to her closet and prays:

I'm not so sure about this though. In world eight where he's fighting the beaver-things that throw wrenchs, it looks like they touch him, yet nothing happens. Some of his jumping into/on top of enemies looks a little odd. Like he should have been killed. I don't doubt it's possibile, but the video looks a little questionable.

To me, it doesn't look like the Rocky Wrenches are hitting him with their wrenches. It's close, but he's just far enough away to avoid being hit.

As for the jumping into/on top of enemies - I've actually done that many times (not usually on purpose, but I digress ...). If you do it right, you can almost be underneath an enemy and still have the game think you've jumped on the bad guy. Super Mario Bros. 1 is especially notorious for this, but I've seen it in SMB3 as well.

It works especially well if you can run up beside a guy and just clip him - you maintain your speed and you get a boost upwards just as though you jumped straight down on top of him.

Lastly, for anyone who's wondering ... the glitch in the final level where he goes through the block after getting the hidden 1-up - that is a real glitch. I tried it after seeing this video, and it does work.

The fact is, some people just spend a lot of time on a game, trying to get it perfect. I know I've tried that with Mega Man X (I've passed it probably close to a hundred times by now - my best is about 45 minutes from start to done with everything). You start spending time memorizing the positions of bad guys along with the landscape, and you try to find little shortcuts that will get you where you're going that little bit faster.

If you like that stuff, http://home.comcast.net/~arcthelad/ has a bunch of videos for speed runs/time attacks of other games. You need BitTorrent to download most of them, but they're pretty fun to watch. My favourites are Mega Man 1 & 2, and Marble Madness. Anyone who has ever played Marble Madness will appreciate the insane speed with which this person finishes the game. It's unbelievable.

Aw, thanks Peach.

After watching this video several times though, I had picked up SMB3 for the first time in a long time. I had forgotten that in the game it was possible to mistime jumps or fall in pits. I died about 3 times on the first Goomba before I started playing cautiously.

I was about to bitch about his supposed invincibility when it comes to running into enemies and still killing them, but if people are confirming these to be possible, I'll ease off ^^ Nevertheless, I've read in a few places (can't remember where) that this wasn't a single, flawless playthrough; rather, there are a few reloaded savestates here and there, and the video was edited to remove the "messed-up" parts. I'm not 100% sure about all this, however, so take that as you will ^^

http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/WhyAndHow.html is a good page for describing the art of making time-attack videos. Basically, some people do re-do parts over and over again to get it right, and then just keep the correct version.

It's still cool, though. I don't care if I played the Level 8 tank/ship a million times - I don't know if I'd ever get things timed as well as that guy.

As for the running into enemies thing ... check out http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/SuperMa ... ricks.html - about halfway down, look for "Jumping on the edges of enemies".

I've only just seen this the other day and the person completing it isn't cheating or anything as you can tell, it's just that the player just literally memorised every part of each level which is very impressive since it takes long hours to be able to do something like that. That's how he's able to do levels from 3-30 seconds.

I could see he wasn't using "computer-edited" cheating devices or anything of the kind since he jumped on each oppoents head with full accuracy and memory of where they are.

Since he was using flutes (making players able to skip worlds) he didn't have too much to remember since he skipped worlds 2-7. I played this game loads when I was little but I'll never be as quick and accurate as he was.
