Depends on your specs. I got my Dell Inspiron 8200 in October, 2002, and it works just fine:

Windows XP
Pentium 4
256 MB RAM
Nvidia Geforce Graphics card
DirectX 8.1-compatable Sound Card
6 GB Disk Space
CD-ROM drive for installing the discs.

By the way, if any of you are on Bismarck and are looking for a WHM to level up with, you are welcome to look me up. I'm often /anon (to keep from being constantly bothered with party invitations), but you can look up Niban Neko or Zylle and that will be me. :)

My graphics card is a Intel (R) 82852/82855 Graphics Controller, so I don't know if it will work or not. I've done a google search on whether it will work, but the only result I get is a website that doesn't work. >< I will find out somehow.

That's actually just the video controller, not the card itself. To find out what you have:

Go to the Start Menu, go to Run, type in "cmd", then at the prompt, "debug". You should then get a dash appear at the next line, followed by a blinking cursor. Here, type "D C000:0100" (no quotes), and hit Enter. Over by the right hand side, you should see information about the graphics card you have. If nothing interesting appears (it's all garbled text), try replacing 0100 with 0010 or other such multiples of 10 to find the line that does have the info for you.

Ok ^^ i play FFXI and im a 10/War on the Ramuh server. And I know you can buy passes to go to other servers, for a price that is.
But can you just up and switch servers? or do you have to create a character to be on that world?

You can't up and switch completely, I don't think. I know you can use a Worldpass to create your character on a specific server. David and I both used a Worldpass from friends to do just this. Now all 4 of us are on the same server and we can play together. :)

I believe you can use them to play on a specific server for a set length of time, as well.

FYI, I think Squeenix has dropped the price on the PC (base) version since Chains of Promathia came out - we saw it for $30 last weekend. If you go on and pick up CoP at the same time, you'd only be shelling out ~60.

I've been going back and forth a lot over whether to go on and buy CoP now or hold off till Christmas... I really want it. ^^

I'm an FFXI player too:

Name: Dymian
Server: Shiva
Job: 56WHM/31SMN

I've been playing for a year in January. Haven't been on in a while, kinda taking a break.

Ok, I'm resurrecting this thread cause I have some FFXI related questions. (Dave, Jen, I'm looking in your direction, do you guys still play?)

I was at best buy today and saw FFXI, and was strangely intrigued and REALLY wanted it. However, I have many MANY many MANY things holding me back.

1 - Do people still play this game? It's like 3 years old, are there still a significant amount of people playing?

2 - I want a console version. Xbox360 is out of the question (i'm not buying a new system JUST for this game) but for PS2 I need to purchase a HDD and a broadband adapter correct? Do they have wireless adapters for the PS2? if not, I'll be forced to get the PC version.......but I don't know how well I'd do with it. I've never been a PC game player (i just get uncomfortable).

3 - Dave, Jen, do ya'll still have a worldpass to give me if I get it? *nudge nuzzle*

4 - Can I EASILY and REALISTICALLY stop my account (kinda put it into a dormant period when i don't play for a significant amount of time) and then say 6 months later start it back up without much hassle when I want to start playing again?

I have other reservations but they aren't coming to mind. Maybe conversation iwll spark my brain.

Yes, yes we do =P
AnimeGuru0 wrote:1 - Do people still play this game? It's like 3 years old, are there still a significant amount of people playing?
Oh yes. With the release of the game for the XBox, there are a veritable plethora of people joining up for the first time. Plus, many of the older players are still around, so the various servers are as populated as they were about a year or two ago.

Your best bet, I think, would be to go the PC route. RadioShack sells a USB PS2-controller adapter for $10, so you don't have to try and relearn how to control your character using a keyboard.

I also want to mention the expansions here. Jen and I recommend getting the "Vana'diel" collection, which contains the core game and first two expansions for only $20. You'll not be able to access the new expansions until at least LV30, but at least they'll be available when you get to that point. I'd hold off on the newest expansion, "The Treasures of Aht Urghan", until that point, too, as you cannot realisitically access it until at least then.

No problem :) Just let us know what you decide re: getting the game and we'll be more than happy to bring you in :)

If you want to continue using your characters, the best you can do is stop it for 3 months; beyond that, your content IDs would be deleted and your character wiped. Otherwise, you can just stop playing (but keep paying the monthly fee) and your character will remain as it was.

One last question, actually two.

Do you play with a controller or just use mouse and keyboard? Cause i don't want to buy an extra peripheral if I don't have to.

Two, the world pass. Do I just sign up and start playing and then can use a world pass after, or do I have to use it before signing up?

You CAN play using a mouse and keyboard (the mouse for controlling your character, while the keyboard is for selecting commands and typing), but, again, if you have a PS2 already, you can just pick up the cheap RS adapter and plug that in to move, manipulate menues, etc.

After signing up, you'll be asked if you want to input a World Pass when you get to the character creation screen.

XD. I conned Dan into getting the game. How could he not? I used the Adventurer Recruit campaign, so he gets the first month completely free (even the game was free, just downloaded it straight from the square-enix site). He's downloading all the updates now, should be logging in for the first time tonight ^^

And of course, he'll be joining the wonderful world of Bismarck. It'll be Dave, Jen, Dan and I tearing up the world of Vana'diel! Dave and Jen killing all the baddies, and me and dan annoyingly getting in the way and getting pwned and deleveling! It's brilliant!!! XD

You confuse me. You complain about this game every. time. i'm. online. O__o; it doesn't sound like you have very much fun playing it.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

It's ok to post if this thread's been resurrected by admin, right? o.o *walks slowly into the thread*

Just for info, I also play.

Name: Satina

I've been playing for over a year with a 5 month break crammed in the middle of it. I can't wait to get back on. Oh, as a side note, do not EVER get married. Sure the ceremony is unbelievably deep and detailed and you get rare/ex rings and an Opaline dress, but it really isn't worth the drama.

Actually, as long as you're adding value to a thread, you can post in any of them. We "resurrect" a thread because no one has posted in it for a long time. (And by we, I mean admins, mod, and/or users) ^^
