Bob:
For the most part, the game play is NOTHING like previous Final Fantasy's (Fantasies?). Battles are initiated by encountering monsters you see on the world or dungeon map; in the beginning, most monsters are passive, so you need to approach them and engage them in battle, which, unless you have a party with you, will be a one-on-one battle. There are agressive monsters out there, however, that will approach and attack you if they're close enough; this can be a pain if you're fighting a monster already and don't have anyone nearby to help you out. There is no turn-based attacking, per se; rather, if you choose to attack the enemy, you will do so continuously unless you cast a magic spell (which merely interrupts your attack) or you disengage and try to run from the enemy. Gil dropping is next to null in this game, however; you make your money mostly by selling off the spoils you get from battle, or participating in quests (more below).
Aside from leveling, you can also improve the skills you have with weapons, shields, and magics by using them over and over again (the exception is shields and parrying, which will increase whenever your character randomly blocks an attack). There are also quests and missions you undertake to improve your "fame" and rank, which eventually lets you purchase items at shops for cheaper than normal prices. These quests can also reward you with nice amounts of gil, or some hard to come by items or equipment.
There is no set "goal" in most ORPGs; rather, the game is quite open-ended, with a general backstory to it that drives the different kingdoms and their actions. Much of the "story", if you can even call it that, comes from the missions you undertake for your kingdom in order for it to become the top kingdom among the three that constitute this world.
As for if it's worth it...that all depends on if you plan on playing this game on a regular basis. You would pay either $50 or $100 (give or take) depending on what system you'd play it on, then $13 a month to access the game's servers. Since I play roughly once every two days, this approximates to $1 a day of playing, which I think is quite a bargain. Really, however, much of the fun in this game comes from joining up into parties with friends and taking out high-level baddies to advance your level and progress the "story", so to speak. If you think you have that kind of time and commitment, it's definitely worth the money; however, if you don't think you'll be playing more than once a week, I would honestly reconsider getting the game.
