pocket monsters/sailormoon

Post by yamijounouchi » Tue Jun 29, 2004 8:54 am

i was talking to a friend of mine--more of acquaintance, really, actually, i hate him--anyway though, this acquaintance i hate and i were talking, and he made an interesting statement: he said that sailormoon and pocket monsters were originally much different before coming to america. he says that before it was dubbed, the japanese people made the changes accordingly, and now both have two different japanese versions. does anyone know if there's actually something to this or not? if so, please respond. thank you.

There might be small changes between the TV broadcast of the shows and the home video release of them in Japan, however if this was the case, the changes would be fairly small at most. Not big enough to consider the two completely different versions, more like editing for the broadcast audience audience. I'm not sure if there was any difference between TV and LD/VHS/DVD of the two shows in Japan, but if there was, it's not a huge thing to go and think that they're completely different versions of the show.

i don't know about the tv/dvd versions or anything. i don't think that's what he meant. but, the way he described it, there were many drastic changes.

Possibly. you might have to go to Japan to find out.

If he's talking about Electric Soldier Porygon on the other hand... then yes, there was a "drastic" change. Heck, if I were Tokyopop, I wouldn't want any more kids getting seizures from that... *shudder*

James: For some reason I'm seeing you in a nurse's uniform...
Steve: Thank you Jeff, that will be all. ... He's not here, is he? Oh God I've internalized him...

Actually, it's 4Kids (dubbers) and Viz (home video release distributors), Tokyopop played no part in bringing Pocket Monsters over here, not even manga-wise if I remember correctly. I was able to watched the mentioned episode just fine, though I can see how that one scene could've caused problems. Even so, not much really had to be changed, just hold back on the flashing colors and problem solved, no reason to have to cut the entire episode.
