Which came first?

Post by DistantMemory » Mon Jun 28, 2004 4:50 pm

I've had a hard time finding out the origins of these anime (meaning I don't know whether they first originated as manga or anime). I was wondering if anyone could help me out with any of these titles:

~Di-Gi-Charat:
~Shoujo Kakumei Utena:
~Shin Seiki Evangelion:
~RahXephon:
~Aquarian Age:
~Princess Concerto:

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps out! :D

Actually, from what I've looked up, it seems the manga came first. That's what the information i've found has said, anyway.

Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I think Sailorasteroid is right about Utena - I've read a few places that the manga came afterwards, because the creators wanted to retell the story.

I know that the Evangelion anime series came first, and the DigiCharat manga came first. I don't know about the other series the OP listed.

Ack! You're right! The manga says 1996 and the anime 1997! I've been laboring under a gross misapprehension and have given bad information. I must now fall upon my sword.

*thump*

And next time I will stand the sword up before I fall on it.

Di-Gi Charat started as anime, I believe. In the manga, Digiko constantly references the anime, so that's what I'm assuming.

Utena was actually joint. The manga might have come first, but the anime was in production at the time as well. The reason the manga differs so greatly is that Chiho Saito and Kunihiko Ikuhara had different ideas, but they created the concept together (along with two or three other people whom I can't remember the name of).

Evangelion was an anime first. In fact, I believe it's just recently (in the last two years) that the manga finished it's run. Sadamoto enjoyed what he saw of the anime, and Gainax permitted him to make the manga. The same applies to FLCL and .hack (though .hack is different since it started as a game, then became animated, then put into manga).

As for the others, I wasn't aware that RahXephon had a manga. And I've never even heard of the other two.

EDIT: Sorry, hit submit twice on accident. And disregard my comment on Di-Gi Charat. Mine was an assumption, and Ni-ban has an actual answer.

Wow, it's Attack of the Simultaneous Posts. OK, how about some sources for the Utena thing. The generally reliable imdb gives the release date for the anime as 2 April 1997. This site gives the manga starting at 1996 and specifically says it came first. It does appear they were released simultaneously, like Sailor Moon, but the manga spawned the story.

Digi Charat started as small, animated shorts created to promote a gaming store in the Akihibara gaming district. Digiko was the mascot for said store. It grew popularity, and the episodes became longer, created OAVs and movies, and then the manga.

It's true that Di Gi Charat was created to promote the Gamers anime stores, but before she stared in the animated adverts she appeared in a 4 panel manga series called 'Gema Gema' (I believe she still does) though those also advertise the Stores.

So, with Di Gi Charat it is complicated. Technically the manga came first, but the official manga anthologies did not come out until after the TV anime series. :)

*Sorry, I'm kinda a big Di Gi Charat fan... god that's so sad LOL!*

She was originally made as a mascot for Gamers around '97/'98. However, she was so popular a mascot, that TBS and Broccoli later made a short, sixteen episode tv series about her in 1999, increasing her popularity. Then came more Di Gi Charat-based CDs, manga, video games, and anime than you can count with your fingers and toes.
Aquarian Age
Aquarian Age was based off of a card game of the same name.

When it comes to that kind of thing, for the most part, manga always comes out first. That's how it usually works out, with some exceptions such as Digi Charat.
