Earth Maiden Arjuna
I went to Best Buy a couple days ago, and found the complete collection of Earth Maiden Arjuna (4 DVDs for $40. w00t). I've wanted to see it for a while, so I picked it up. And I must say, I'm very pleased with it. I haven't watched it all yet, but I adore it already. It's big on environmentalism and things similar to it. The storyline is riveting, the music is by Yoko Kanno (w00t again), the visuals are great (though, there are a few instances of bad CG), and the characterization is wonderful. The show first came out here a few years back, but it was never popular. Has anyone else here seen it and if so, what are your thoughts on it?

I've only seen the first few episodes of this, but I liked what I saw. I loved the music, and the story was rather nifty from what I saw.
It reminded me of Princess Mononoke a little in its focus on the environment, but it was different enough to make it interesting. I'd like to see the rest of it.

I read many bad reviews on it and how it focuses too much on the environment. So I didn't get it. I think I saw the same set at Gamestop. At first I thought it was a bootleg because it was a set and it was cheap...and I was shocked how Gamestop hosts bootlegs..but then I saw the logo.
Should I get it though? It seems kind of boring. Does it have a lot of action and fighting?

I haven't had time to watch more than the first DVD, but yes, it does have action and fight scenes.Sakuya wrote:I read many bad reviews on it and how it focuses too much on the environment. It doesn't focus "too much" on the environment. The environment is the entire point of the show. o_0 That's like saying that BSSM focuses too much on protecting the earth.

Well, it matters how strong that focus is to whether we want watch it. How fair is the show in its treatment of both sides? Does it give any time to supporting the cause of industry, like Mononokehime, or is it like Captain Planet, constanly hammering home the "Mankind is evil and will destroy the Earth so that a privileged few can be rich" message?ParaKiss_Groupie wrote:It doesn't focus "too much" on the environment. Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"
The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

It does neither. Instead, it introduces creatures born of pollution that are trying to destroy the world. While the show certainly attacks pollution, mass industry, etc., it doesn't talk about how evil humans are. It's more about how pathetic they are. For instance, in one episode, Juna is forced to stay in the woods with no food or water. She's looking around, seeing how all the animals are eating. She realizes that she doesn't even know what she can and can't eat. The message isn't that humans should be hated, but rather they should be pitied.

Doesn't seem as though I'd like it then. I find it difficult to sit through or read anything that rates "nature" above humanity. If humanity isn't really pitiable or evil, then the premise is false, and if it is, then it's going to be depressing and dark and will probably try to make me feel guilty about being a modern human, and I don't care to feel that.

Well, that's just different tastes. I enjoy shows like that because they make me think, and therefore grow. But then again, I place nature over people anyway. I think that mankind is the worst thing to happen to this planet.Sailorasteroid wrote:Doesn't seem as though I'd like it then. And I'm getting off-topic. Return to the topic, ParaKiss and everyone else! Lest I smite thee.... and stuff. ^^;;

THANK YOU PARAKISS! Now I know that I'm gonna want to get this. I kept passing it in the BX going "well, it's only 27 dollars for a whole box set, but do I wanna watch something I don't know if I'll like?". Now I can go get it, yay! I read an artical about it in Animerica a while ago and they said that it was Ok but really slow so it kinda turned me off on the idea of watching it, I didn't think that it would be able to hold my attention. The animation looked wicked though!

All you had to do was say something, and we'd have watched it. *glare*Liddy wrote:Well, I started it... and it seemed interesting. But I watched it with a group friends and some weren't to interested so we went to the next dvd. I'd have like to see the rest......but due to certain events I was unable to finish it. *ahem*

That would have been to easy. I'd rather make suggestions about it than ask. ^^ Yes I've seen some of it...but we never finished it.ParaKiss_Groupie wrote:All you had to do was say something, and we'd have watched it. *glare*Liddy wrote:Well, I started it... and it seemed interesting. I finally got it yesterday and watched the first episode, it seems REALLY good so far. However, the box sucks, the stuff keeps falling out, I don't know why they decided on that anoying clippy thing since it isn't very useful.
