Uncut Yu-Gi-Oh and Shaman King!

i sure hope not cause you sounds like freakin' sonic, manta sounds like a 30 year old guy with a banana in his nose, ryu's spanish, and ren's got a (really bad) british accent. also, are they redubbing yugioh too?

Yes, both Shaman King and Yu-Gi-Oh will be bilingual. Sorry I forgot to mention that earilier. Each uncut release will start in October, with the first two volumes being released, both DVD volumes will have 3 episodes and retail for $19.98 if I remember correctly.

I bought Shaman King Uncut Volume 01 the other day. It's a pretty good release so far. The new Dub is so much better than the one shown on T.V. I love the original opening and ending songs. The only thing that is kind of annoying is the subs are dubtitles. But since the new dub is so close to the original it's not that bad. I can't wait until I get Volume 02.

I also recently bought volume one of Shaman King. It was a much better release than what I had expected it to be. The video quality was pretty good, but is it just me or is the audio lower on the Japanese language track than it is in the English language track? It's kind of annoying that the English subtitles are dubtitles, but like Sailor53 said, the new English dub is really accurate to the original Japanese version, so it's not too huge of a deal. My only real problem with it is that the subtitles are timed with the dub in mind, so sometimes the timing can be a little off with the Japanese version. I miss the next episode previews, since those were skipped on these DVDs for no reason at all, but all they showed were just clips of the next episode, so it's not too huge of a deal. It's also kind of odd that 4Kids kept the text for the opening/ending credits in Japanese rather than translating it into English.

Also, out of curiosity, I checked out the new English dub last night and I couldn't stand it. It was so awful that I didn't even make it all the way through the episodes. While the new English dub is incredibly accurate to the original (with the expection of the names, which were changed for some odd reason in the uncut dub, even though it's supposed to be uncut), it's the horrible acting that pisses me off most. It's like....when 4Kids translated the dialog in English, they didn't have enough words in the sentence to match up with the lip movement correctly, so when the voice artists started speaking, they had to really drag out their syllables, so they wouldn't have any off-dubbing problems or something. It's hard to explain, but it's just so bleh. It didn't help that 4Kids was still using the same voice artists from the English edited version, either. All of the voices either didn't fit their character, spoke really blandly, or had that weird lip movement problem thing I mentioned. I think I'm going to stick with the Japanese version for the rest of this series. ^^

I enjoyed the disc overall, though. My two biggest problems with it are the lack of extras and the number of episodes being released per volume. I still think only releasing three episodes every volume is ridiculous, especially for longer anime series like Shaman King and Yugioh. Although, I should probably be grateful that they released it this way, since it makes the DVDs really cheap at only $20. If Funimation released more episodes per volume, knowing them they'd probably sell it for $40 instead of $20 like they did with their release of Fruits Basket. However, I would still prefer it if they would release more episodes per volume at a low price like $20 or at least have more extras on the DVDs.

I think a lot of anime DVDs are like that, for some reason. I know at least some of mine are...

I got the DVDs about a week and a half ago. I very much enjoyed the subs, and I too decided to watch the uncut dubs out of curiousity. I personally liked the dubs. English names aside, you've of course got the original music and script and footage. As for the voice actors, though they are the same ones that were casted for the editted dub (most of them anyway), you gotta admit, their acting is much better than before. They actually sound like they give a damn about what they're doing this time. "Joey", "Len", and "Rio" may still have those accents, but since they're no longer saying stereotypical lines, even they can actually sound serious this time around. Though, I gotta say, Kaiba sounds more like Brock from Pokemon this time around. I realize they're the same voice, but I'm saying he sounds moreso than in the editted dub, and it's a bit awkward hearing a more Brockish voice saying some of the cruel lines that Seto says (though, it kinda makes it funny that way). Overall, I'd say the dubs are now at least watchable. I'd recommend putting them on if you're in the mood for an anime but don't wanna bother reading.

BTW, on a side note, for people asking why the dub version of Ren has an English accent, I think I might have caught something here. The Japanese decended from mainland Asia, namely parts of China, which is where Ren came from. Likewise, most Americans are descended from England. See, both England and China are countries that a particular language originated from, so they're a bit similar. And hey, if some people can compare the Osaka accent to the New York accent or Kansai to Southern for whatever reasons, then I think Chinese to British could be perfectly plausible.

that DOES make sense, but my complaint isn't so much that he's british, just: why not get someone with a british accent or at least someone who can fake it?

i bought the first uncut yugioh dvd, and i must say on many points, i was disappointed. while the redubbing of the english script was good, the acting was not. personally, i never thought the acting was that great to begin with, but now it doesn't even seem like they're trying.
another thing that bothered me was the "dubtitles". while a lot of things sink up well in the original and the new dub, many do not. it seems just down right lazy to use one script for both versions. not to mention that damn annoying, unskippable wrestling toy commercial. it's not really related to anything, but still...

I recently received volumes one and two of the uncut Yugioh DVDs as Christmas presents this past year, so I can post my opinions about them. It feels so good to finally be able to watch the Japanese version of the series rather than that horrible English adaption. While the English edited version of Yugioh isn't as bad as people say it is, it's still pretty crappy. The Japanese music and seiyuu are much more enjoyable than the English voice artists, the show is a lot more enjoyable without all the cheesy lines from before, and I enjoy Yugioh so much more without all that "Shadow Realm" crap.

The quality of the discs is very good; about the same quality you'll find on the uncut Shaman King DVDs. I don't mind the fact that the English subtitles are really dubtitles because the new English dub is so incredibly accurate to the Japanese version, but I don't like how they are timed with the English dub in mind, so sometimes the subtitle timing can be a little off when you're watching the Japanese version. Still, it's not so bad, although I would've preferred it if they at least re-timed the dubtitles for the Japanese version. Some sort of extras on the discs would've been nice too, but that's not too big of a problem and the rest of the discs' quality is on par with the quality of the Shaman King DVDs.

The two biggest problems I have with this release is the unskippable previews at the beginning of the discs, and the fact that Funimation is only releasing three episodes per volume. This is ridiculous, especially for a very long series like Yugioh, and will just end up taking more space on my shelves. Still, this is 4Kids' first attempt at releasing a subbed anime, so I'll forgive them for these flaws this time. I haven't watched the new English dub yet, and if it's anything like Shaman King's new dub, I don't think I want to, either. So, I can finally put the English version of Yugioh behind me. Sayonara, 4Kids dubs!

Out of curiosity I decided to check out the uncut English adaption of Yugioh yesterday. I had only watched a few minutes of it before, but this time I watched it all the way through the end of episode six. All the English voice artists were the same in the uncut version as they are in the edited version expcet for Mai's, so I already knew what to expect. I was actually kind of disappointed that 4Kids changed Mai's voice artist for this adaption because I thought she had one of the best ones in the entire series. Her new voice artist isn't too bad either, but I still like the older one better.

The biggest problem I had with the uncut adaption was how they would occasionally speak rather slowly and this would tend to get on my nerves. They didn't do this as much as they did in the uncut Shaman King adaption, yet it was still there every once and a while. One thing I noticed that was kind of weird was how in the edited version, Jonouchi's English name was "Joey Wheeler". Meanwhile, in episode four of the uncut version, he introduced himself as "Katsuya Joey", which implies to me that 4Kids is trying to make "Joey" his surname. o.O

I just got volume three of the uncut Yugioh DVDs in the mail today, and while the first two volumes had a pretty decent release, this disc was just awful. It was loaded with so many technical errors. After the opening credits, they'll play a clip from the episode prologe while the opening theme song keeps on playing, the screen would pause briefly for a few seconds during the commercial eyecatches (and both of these things happen for all three episodes on the disc), and then there's no dialog during the Japanese version of the prologe of episode eight! 4Kids probably delayed the release of Shaman King volume three for similar problems, but I wonder why didn't they do the same for Yugioh? I just hope they'll do a recall for this volume because it seriously needs one.

From what I can tell, about the same as on the previous two volumes, but I only watched about five minutes of the dub on volume three before I switched over to the sub.
