Nope. Both came out in 2001. You can check imdb for yourself.

I've never played any of the Final Fantasy video games, but I enjoyed The Spirits Within a lot. The plot didn't bother me like it did some people (I don't really mind the quasi-New Age thing so I actually found it creative) but I agree it was the graphics that made the movie. I own it on DVD now. This is the type of movie that having a DVD player hooked up to a big screen was made for.

Here's something that I recently heard on TSW there are supposed to be 2 chocobos one is on her shirt after she awakes from the dream (second time she awakens I should say) and the 2 chocobo is on a guys suitcase when the phantoms get into the dome. I looked but my dvd player doesn't zoom all that good so I couldn't really tell if they were there or not.

I love the Final Fantasy video games, Final Fantasy animes and movies. I've played every real Final Fantasy video game and I love them all. The video games have the best video game storylines and are very well developed. Final Fantasy VII is my favorite video game. The Final Fantasy animes have very different storylines from the Final Fantasy video game storylines, however, the FFU anime has character resemblances to FFV. The movie has resemblances to the video games, but because the time period for the story if shorter, the story is more developed in the video games. Each version is different and wonderful. The Final Fantasy video game series is the best RPG video game series. I personally feel that the FF video games, FF anime and FF movie are all wonderful. Oh, fact of the day, my favorite kinds of stories are love stories so I love romantic storylines. Does anyone else agree?
Usagi and Mamoru are my favorite couple ever. Usagi and Mamoru forever!

Add to a discussion
If you're going to agree with someone in a discussion, please actually add a little thingy besides just a basic 'I agree' type response. Again, this is pointless and a waste of space.

This is the SECOND time I've had to warn you about this. It's fine and all that the movie made you fall asleep, but either TELL US WHY it made you fall asleep or don't post. One line posts are just a waste of space on the forum. At least if you tell us WHY the movie made you fall asleep we can have discussion branch out from there. PLEASE at least ADD to the discussion or DON'T POST IN THAT THREAD. Thank you.

Someone already said this in the thread, but I found it kind of funny, because this movie made me fall asleep too... and twice. ^^;; I have a lot of sleeping troubles... and those are pretty much the only times I've ever actually fallen asleep during a movie. Perhaps it emits sleep-inducing rays?

I first tried to see it years ago when it came out on DVD (or VHS?) and as said, fell asleep, right in the middle of the day. The second time I tried was at night about a week ago since my roomie has it, and within 20 minutes, again. ^^; Thankfully the *third* time I actually did manage to watch the whole movie. But I have to say, I didn't like it at all.

Naturally, the CG was gorgeous. But I found the characters undeveloped, most of the voice acting was annoying (with a couple exceptions), and the plot felt like some recycled sci-fi thing that's been done a million times. In fact it reminded me of almost the exact same concept of a movie I just saw a little while ago... Nausicaa...
only with aliens instead of giant bugs.
And it had pretty much no ending, the movie just like... stopped. I was very disappointed.

I really liked Spirits Within. The only FF game I've played was Final Fantasy 2 for SNES, so I wasn't really bothered by the whole "it's nothing like the games" thing.

Although, I do have a question. Back when this movie came out, I was friends with this girl who was a big FF fan who'd played all the games, and she said that the plot of Spirits Within resembled a plot from one of the games. I can't remember which one she said though. It may have been VII since she was always talking about that game (I haven't played any of the games except for II so I wouldn't know). I was wondering if she was right?

The only thing that I thought resembled any of the games I've played (7 through X-2), was...
The "gaia" thing was a lot like the Life Stream from FF7... to the point that it even looked a ton like it, especially the ending.
Off-topic EDIT: YAY! I'm no longer an SMU Newbie

Yeah, ditto what Sylphiel said. The whole "spirit" core thing in the earth was very similar to VII's life stream.

It didn't really have any other similarities to any other FF game.

My friend borrowed The Spirits Within from someone and frankly I wasn't impressed. I wouldn't pay to see this in the theaters and certainly wouldn't shell out the cash for the DVD. It wasn't a bad film but it certainly wasn't a good film either. It was decidedly mediocre. The only thing going for it was the visuals. So, even though the visuals were better then Toy Story and Shrek, the characters from TS and Shrek were far more interesting. Here's a bit from a review that I think says it better then I can:
the characters mostly communicate in urgent-sounding clichés, such as “That’s a minute we don’t have!” and “Let’s do this thing and get the hell out of here!” The story, too, is weary with clichés, from the military man who’s inevitably evil, to the black man who’s inevitably the first to go down, to a pair of characters swiped directly from Aliens who die together just like they did in that movie.

Perhaps it’s better simply to ignore everything but the visuals. Perhaps Final Fantasy would actually play better as a silent film, accompanied perhaps by a techno soundtrack and a few well-chosen subtitles, like, “Whoa! That’s some big scary thing over there!” and “I have no idea what’s going on, but it sure looks cool!”

And it does, after all, look cool, which is the only conceivable reason to see the film (and the only reason it rates as high as a “C-”). If it had been filmed with live actors, there would be no reason to see it at all. . .The appeal, such as it is, of Final Fantasy is that it shows us new possibilities — not that it does anything interesting with those possibilities.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.
