Final Fantasy anime or Final Fantasy Spirits Within

Post by whitewolf05 » Tue Apr 27, 2004 10:52 am

I just recently saw a Final Fantasy Unlimited episode and I would have to say that it was a million times better than "Spirits Within" at least that had something that resembles magic. Spirits Within completly ruined the final fantesy comcept. (just trying to see if others think so)

The Spirits Within seemed to be pretty CG and nothing more, IMO.

And as for a Final Fantasy anime...I saw one at Ushicon about two years ago, and I don't know which it was, but it sucked. Completely. The animation and mixed CG was terrible, and the plot was so contrived and bland I had to get up and leave.

Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Ah, you must be talking about Final Fantasy Unlimited. Yeah, I'm not a fan of that series, either. The only thing I like about it are the opening and ending themes. And indeed, the CG was tacky and poorly used.

There was also another Final Fantays anime called Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. It was a series of OVA's made in the 1990s based on Final Fantasy V. And from what I've heard, even Final Fantasy junkies should stay away from it.

I've seen some of FFU and Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. LotC wasn't awful, but it wasn't wonderful. And I despise FFU. It is the only anime which I absolutely hate. Bad CGI, bad voices, bad lines, bad character designs, and a bad story. I saw nothing good about this anime.

Spirits Within, however, I thought was good. It had a great story (IMO) and the characters were likeable. While it had nothing to do with the Final Fantasy series, I still enjoyed it. I think that's what most people see as its problem: That it's unrelated to FF even though it shares its name.

A bullet to the head or the hangman's noose are better alternatives to either FF anime or the so-called movie.

Ok... maybe that's a tad extreme. But simply put, I couldn't tolerate any of them for more than a few minutes before my head imploded.

Final Fantasy: Unlimited is something I really enjoyed. I thought that the plot was really good.

I really liked Spirits Within, though it's better not to think of it as straight FF. For what it is, though, I like it quite a bit.

I have all of FF:Unlimited, but I haven't had a chance to watch it.

I forgot where I heard this from, but I remember seeing somewhere that says something along the lines that most people think there's a textbook approach when creating anything in the Final Fantasy genre, where in reality it's more like various approaches in a giant encyclopedia. It was something like that anyways, but I agree with that statement that I wish I saved in my quotes file when I saw it. Especially in the past couple years, a lot of expansion in the Final Fantasy scheme of things.

With that said, I loved The Spirits Within. I had the pleasure of seeing the movie on opening day on the first showing which was awesome. My then-roommate bought the DVD the day it came out, and we watched it quite a bit. Since I moved here, there's some things I wanted to buy my own copies of and that reminded me of getting my own copy of that.

I haven't seen Final Fantasy Unlimited yet, so I can't give an opinion on that. One of my housemates has the VHSs for Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals, but I haven't gotten to watching them yet, maybe when the semester ends and this topic is still active I'll remember to watch it.

I guess the reason I couldn't get into Spirits Within is becuase I don't even play the games, so getting into a movie that, in addition, has nothing to do with the games and just bears the name just wasn't possible for me. I did enjoy the graphics very much, and there were some parts that were neat, but it wasn't like "OH WOW AWESOME" for me.

I have a bit of a neutral attitude toward TSW. The graphics were excellent, no doubt, and I liked the story, but it was a little bit disheartening to see it so far removed from typical FF themes - fantasy, magic, chocobos and moogles, etc. If it weren't for the fact that it was called "Final Fantasy", I probably would have liked it a whole lot more; I guess I had these high expectations of what a FF movie would be like that were let down a bit when I finally saw it.

What little I have seen of FFU was very enjoyable. I LOVE Vivid, the ending theme, and a few years ago I had most of it memorized. The animation and music was pretty catching, and it was rather enjoyable, albeit a tad predictable. Like Jen, I need to watch more, though, before making a well-founded opinion on it.

I saw The Spirits Within about a year ago, and it was a good movie. I believe that if they didn't stick the Final Fantasy title on it, it might've done better in theaters.

FF:U is a cute show, I love the Chocobo ^^ The opening and ending themes are great as well. I only have the first DVD, but i probably won't buy any more of it for a while. It's near the bottom of my 'things to buy' list. And I heard the ending isn't that good.

GONZO had to rush the series since it ended in only in 25 episodes due to lack of popularity. It was originally supposed to be 52 episodes long.

Actually, that's not quite right.

The reason FF:U ended the way it did is because funding was halted. Guess the reason why funding ran out...

FF-TSW bombed at the box office, costing Square at least $100 million dollars. With such a expensive bomb, they could not continue to fund things like FF:U.

Dan, if you have PayPal or something, I'll send you my R1 copy of Spirits Within that I bought when I was in the US. Not that I don't want it anymore, but I'll buy a copy in France later.

Hehehehehe :P this way, you won't have to spend lots of money on it!

Back to topic, I liked Spirits Within but I guess I saw it a different way than some people because I had never known about the Final Fantasy universe before that. So I watched it just as it was, and I liked the art, and the concept. Though the ending song made me cry because I hated the singer... but I loved the song! How weird is that :P

Though I understand it can be pretty disturbing to hear "Hey, there's gonna be a FF movie!" and then you see the thing and are like "WTF! It's not FF related!" . But it's better to have a movie like that, that's quite decent, than a cheap movie version of a loved game, right ;) ?

6 for one, half dozen for the other.

For the case of the former though, it'd be like making "Super Mario Bros. 4" but without Mario and Luigi in the game. It just wouldn't be right.

Hmm, if that offer still stands after I get back from A-kon, that'd be great! I'm too poor right now to get it or else I would. Thanx!

Well, that arguement really doesn't work since, with the exception of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, characters don't stay the same between all Final Fantasy games.

Aya Reiko - But didn't TSW and FF:U come out years apart from one another? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I swear I remember there being a big gap between TSW and FF:U.

Dan: this offer will stay open, lol. No worries :P

As for Spirits Within, to add something more, well, I do understand how you all feel, you know, with something bearing a name just "for the heck of it".

My guess is, that in the context of a movie, the "Final Fantasy" name can be seen as a brand. Something like that. And in that brand, you have a series of games, you have an (or more ^^;; ?) animated series, and you have a movie, not especially related to each other. Of course, when you are a devoted player, you might not like the other company's products, but you have that right, hehe :P

Let's just hope their next products isn't diapers o.O;;;; *you know, like some anime merchandise ^^;;;;;;;*
