Gundam SEED
Today, the series makes its U.S. debut at 10:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network's new Saturday Toonami block. I heard some good and bad things about the show, but from what I saw from the promos, it looks good.

Is this the edited dub or an uncut dub? I'm just curious to know, but I probably won't watch it since I already have access to fansubs. It's been a pretty good series, but be warned. Frey is annoying as heck and they're wayyyy too many recap episodes.

I don't know. I'd assume there'll be some editing.
From the first episode, it does look like it has promise. And the robot bird is cool.
The first episode reminds me far too much of the first episode of the original Gundam series, though...

I've heard from some of my friends who saw the original Gundam that Gundam Seed is a rip-off of it, but I haven't seen the original series yet, so I can't say for sure. I saw the dub of episode one last night and it was edited, but I was pretty impressed. The dialog was pretty accurate to my fansubs. The biggest change was they edited out the cuss words and it was pretty obibivious, too. "Those Zaft losers!"
The biggest thing I noticed they cut out of episode one was some bloodshed towards the end of the episode, but nothing too bad.
They cut out the cool opening theme song, as expceted of Toonami, but what they did with the ending theme song was just weird. They started playing the ending theme song towards the end of the episode like they did in the original Japanese version, then they cut to the next episode previews. After the next episode previews, they played the rest of the ending theme song, but used the wrong animation for it. They used the animation from the second opening credits instead of the animation for the first ending credits.
For the most part, the English voices were pretty good. The only one I felt was dissappointing was Yzak's. His English voice wasn't bad...it just wasn't as manical enough compared to his Japanese counterpart's....it needs to be more insane. ^^;;
Also, this is off-topic a bit, but has anyone else noticed that CN has fallen prey to the evils of commercials? One of the things I liked the most about CN was that they only played one commercial break per show, but they played three commercial breaks during Gundam Seed. >< Anyway, the edited dub for Gundam Seed is suprisingly pretty decent, but since I've already seen most of Gundam Seed fansubbed, I don't think I'll be watching this series on CN faithfully. I am looking forward to the uncut dub when it's released on DVD, though.

^_^;; Having downloaded and watched the opening, I can say that I see a good reason they didn't air it. Make that two reasons, and quite bouncy ones at that...

Yeah, I know what you mean, but CN almost always cuts out the openings on all the shows they air on Toonami.

Which wouldn't matter because the rest of the shows on Toonami last night had both custom openings AND actual openings, thus confirming that the Gundam Seed OP has been deemed too bouncy for broadcast here. I don't see why though, I mean the new Toonami is aimed for teens, the show airs at 10:30PM, and the target audience would love the bounciness. ^_^;;;;
And yes, last night it was weird with all the commerical breaks. At first like a couple minutes into it I was kicking myself for not taping it like I do for near-all shows I love or know I will. Then there were so many commerical breaks, I was glad I didn't as I'd have to retape a commerical-less tape from the tape with commericals, which would've been a much bigger task with all the commericals in it. I really wish I knew what was up with that, it just really stood out like a sore thumb to me, and I've been seeing in many places today that I'm not alone. If that's what has to be sacrificed for there to be Toonami and Adult Swim Action back to back on Saturdays, then I don't have much of a problem with it, but if it's not then I really wish they would stop because it's gonna be hard to get people into a new series if once they get excited then a commerical break comes. Three in a half-hour timeslot is not good, and that's all I'm going to say about that.
Overall, I like the dub so far, as well as the timeslot, and I plan to be enjoying more Gundam Seed goodness as it runs through. ^_^

Really? That's interesting. Back in the old days of Toonami, they always cut out the opening credits and replaced it by showing various random clips from that anime while playing that techno music. I'm surprised that they kept the openings on their other shows. I still wish they had kept the Gundam Seed opening theme song because I like it a lot, but that's what my fansubs are for, right? ^^MarioKnight wrote:Which wouldn't matter because the rest of the shows on Toonami last night had both custom openings AND actual openings, thus confirming that the Gundam Seed OP has been deemed too bouncy for broadcast here. The extra commericals are due to the fact that Toonami kept both the original opening and made their own. Also, one of the CN guys said that it would take time before TV-PG programming is used.MarioKnight wrote:Which wouldn't matter because the rest of the shows on Toonami last night had both custom openings AND actual openings, thus confirming that the Gundam Seed OP has been deemed too bouncy for broadcast here. I can't remember, were there three breaks during the rest of the shows? I only watched Yu Yu Hakusho and Gundam Seed, and I can't remember if there was three breaks during Yu Yu Hakusho.
I also liked Gundam Seed, what I saw of it anyway. Kim Possible was on, too, and there were monkey ninja involved, so I got kinda distracted and flipped back and forth. I assume I can download the opening from TDA? I liked the ending song, tho.

Yes there were three during the other shows. The only time it went back to one commerical format was the Bionicle movie.crazydiamond wrote:I can't remember, were there three breaks during the rest of the shows?
