Pretear
I just picked up a copy of volume one of Pretear and had to state my opinion about it. Pretear is a magical girl anime about an ordinary teenager named Himeno Awayuki, who's widower father has just remarried a rich woman, Natsue, who then proceeds to change the name of every business she owns (which is practically the whole island they live on) to match her husband's surrname.
Himeno gains two new stepsisters through this marriage: the lonely girl, Mawata, and Mayune, who likes to pick on Himeno and tries to get in her trouble. Despite this, Himeno tries her best to get along with her new family, but it's not easy for Himeno to be a rich girl. Everyone at school accuses her father for marrying Natsue only for her money and Mawata always ignores her when she tries to make friends with her. Himeno starts to become depressed, thinking it would be better if she were to just dissappear.
Suddenly a group of seven boys appears before her, known as the Leafe Knights. They explain to Himeno that she is destined to become the Princess of Light, Pretear, and she must defend the Earth from the evil Princess of Darkness, Fenrir, who is trying to destroy all the Leafe of the world. At first, Himeno thinks this is all just a plan of theirs to decieve her into thinking she's needed, but after she sees them fighting the Mayouchi (demon larva), she realizes that she must become the Pretear to protect the world.
The transformation sequences in Pretear have a little twist. In order to become the Pretear, Himeno must "Pre" with one of the Leafe Knights by merging with them. The Leafe Knight becomes a ball of energy and flies inside Himeno's breasts and then Himeno is surrouned by glittery light and each time she "Pres" with a different Knight, she gets a new transformation sequence, a new battle costume and a new power. The Leafe Knights then become Himeno's shield and if she's attacked by the Mayouchi, they take the damage for her. In order to destroy the Mayouchi, Himeno simply must locate it's core and elimanate it with her new powers.
Pretear has a lot of comedy in it, as well as romance, a well-planned storyline and some great animation. The opening theme song, White Destiny, is very catchy as well. The DVD quality is excellent and it's a shame ADV couldn't do the same with their DVD release of Sailor Moon. The Extras on the DVD are pretty nice too, as you get the usual textless opening and ending credits, interviews with the English dub's VAs, and production sketches.
I watched all four episodes on volume one last night and watched some of the English dub to see what it was like. It kept getting on my nerves how they persistently kept mispronuncing every single Japanese name they were given to speak. Himeno's English voice was ok, but Kei's voice doesn't seem feminine enough to me (he just seems like the femine type) and Sasame's English voice is nowhere near as sexy as his Japanese counterpart and the little boys' English voices make them sound too old for their age. Still, Pretear is a series that's highly recommended and should not be missed, just as long as you avoid the English dub. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of volume one, but if you have seen it, please respond with any thoughts and opinions regarding this series.

I have the "complete" DVDs (Japnese w/Engrish subtitles only). No special features, just English or Chinese Subtitles. I have no Opinion of the dub, seeing the "collection" was released before the Dubb was available.
It was pretty good, but also very generic in some ways. Like the typical formula of a Magic Girl Anime, with slight differences. It reminded me of a CardCaptor(s) Sakura. I guess it was the costumes and some the the character designings. It reminded me of The CSS/Chobits style that Clamp uses.
All in all I thought it was pretty good and the Costume Designs were lovely. I didn't like Hayete very much, but Sasame was hot. My favorite "Merge/Pretear" outfit that Himeno used was Go's :D!

And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

My favorite out of Pretear's battle costumes so far has been the one she wears when she merges with Sasame, but my favorite of the Leafe Knights has been a tie between Hayate and Goh. I like Goh because I think he's cute and Hayate because I think it's funny the way he's arguging with Himeno and he's pretty cute himself. ^^

Re: Pretear
Too old? They sound perfectly young to me (especially Shin).Cardcaptor Takato wrote:little boys' English voices make them sound too old for their age.
Anyway, I'd highly recommend Pretear. I just finished it up several weeks ago with volume 4. It's a great (but short) magical girl series. Has it's comedic moments, but the plot is very serious throughout (especially once you start getting into Vol. 2). It also has one of the best anime endings I've seen so far.

Maybe old is too much of an over-statement? Not cute enough, then? Especially Mannen's. I don't know...there's just something about their dub voices that irks me.....

I've only seen the first episode of Pretear, but I fell in love with it immediately. It was just so awesome and her different outfit are so cool! I love the opening theme song. It's one of my faves now.
last tuesday I bought the first volume of the manga. the artwork is beautiful. I love Sasame. He's my fave Leafe Knight. So romantic and understanding. The whole manga just kept me reading. I want to know what happened to the last pretear.
As soon as I can, I want to get the anime.

Agreed. ^^ Except I don't think I'll ever buy the anime. Too many other things I want to get, and I feel comfortable with the original version anyway.DreamEmpress wrote:last tuesday I bought the first volume of the manga. the artwork is beautiful. Can someone explain the differences between the manga and the anime for me?

I'm still trying to purchase the DVD's, but since this is a Magic Girl show, my mom can't buy it for me, because ''it's for girls only, not for boys''. Boy, I can't stand the crap she gives because of that, anyways, Pretear looks interesting, and yes, the song is quite catchy, I gotta have it sometime.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread, but better that than start a needless new one.
I've fallen head-over-heels in love with Pretear, in the "I must have the rest of this series, and I must have it NOW." way. It starts out a bit slowly, I think, but episodes 5 and 6 get really, really, really good.
Sasame is my favorite of the Leafe Knights. You don't see nice guys that are exactly that - nice guys - very often, and Sasame falls into this category. I like Hayate a lot too. Himeno and Hayate are just too cute together!
As for the dub... maybe I'm getting more forgiving of dubs, but aside from the way they consistently mispronounce Himeno's name, I don't think it's that bad. Though after reading the rest of this thread, I'm wondering if some things haven't been translated quite properly in the dub.
Is it just me, or does Mayune remind anyone else of Nanami from Utena? I can't put my finger on why, but she does.

Pretear is really similar to Sailor Moon (Junichi Sato anyone?
), but it's definately not a rip-off. I like these sort of henshin sequences, and the art/animation in general (I like the pastel backgrounds for example).
There are many clishées, but the characters make up for it... and THE BISHOUNEN xDDD
The music also reminds me of Sailor Moon... kinda. The intro song rocks and the outro song is just cute. ^^
I liked Himeno's family (especially Tanaka xD) because the members couldn't be ANY more different. Mayune reminded me so much of Esmeraude in BSSM. It was quite eerie xD;;
What more to say? I don't have a clue, but watch it, minna, it's only 13 episodes and you'll get through it fast. it's still worth it

I've read the manga
I really liked this series and I'm a very VERY pickuy viewer of anything) so if anyone hasn't see/read this than get on it right now.
I really like Go. I don't know anything about him but I thought he was cute looking. He seemed like he would be very sweet.
I also liked Himeno's hair. I really would like to have a hair style like that if I could.
