FUNimation gets Kodomo no Omocha

Post by Umino » Sat Apr 10, 2004 10:22 pm

www.animenewsnetwork.com

Is anyone else VERY dissapointed at this? I've heard some damn good things about Kodomo no Omocha, and I'm rather upset Funimation is getting it.

I personally hate Funi's releases. And their recent artboxes (or 'Starter Kits' yeck..) are VERY crappy. They looked pent up, and seemed very halfassed. And don'st Kodomo no Omocha have alot of Japanese references? I can see them going down the toliet...

From what I've heard, Funimation's non-Dragonball/Z/GT-related anime has turned out pretty well.

Seems to me like it's too early to declare this some kind of disaster, also...

I really enjoy their Fruits Basket release dub. I think they will do a good job.

And to all those "Oh were doomed because its getting dubbed" people, no one is forcing you to watch the dub. There will probably be a sub version just SCREAMING for you to watch it. Besides, this gives other people, like me, a chance to watch the show domestically released.

I am sick of seeing every thread that talks about an anime being released and people bitching over how bad they KNOW it will be, when it will be released in the next year. Glad you all think you can see the future.

I'm sure this will come to a surprise to some of you, but..I agree with you, Monkey. I mean, I don't watch dubs. Fine. But...why do some of you choose to positively go NUTS every time it is announced that an anime is to be dubbed? Commenting on it is one thing...completely freaking out is another. I mean, it should be pretty natural to hear about anime being dubbed and released...anime is becoming so mainstream in American lately, so it's no surprise to me when I hear of this anime or that anime being dubbed. *Shrug* If I really want to see said anime, I'll get the damn dvd and watch it subbed, or maybe even find it online. Either way...you don't have to be happy about the release, and you can disagree or comment all you want..but for crying out loud, control yourself.

I'm not really worried about the dub. Because even if we don't a Fruits Basket dub, we should STILL get a good one.

The thing that bugs me is that I'm afraid of the release. Fruits Basket had 6 episodes per DVD, and were at the retail cost of 40 bucks. And what about DBZ? Thats a really bad release right there..

I'm really happy about this news, it's about time Kodacha goodness came over here! And I'm glad it's Funimation who got it, as they have a very good record (not going to include DBZ in that statement, as that was handled very differently than any of their other series') and have proven they can do a good job with shoujo a la Fruits Basket. While Umino mentioned, those discs were retailing $40/disc for 6 episodes, after hearing feedback from retailers about the high disc cost, they took surveys to find the best way to release discs to keep as many people as they can happy. I'm really looking forward to Kodacha finally making its way over here. ^_^

Um, yeah.... So Funi screwed up Dragonball Z. They did good with Fruits Basket. They've done good with lots of things. What Funi did to DBZ was years ago. They've improved. I think it's great that Funi is going to release Kodocha, because Funi's DVDs contain the Japanese version as well. Even if the dub is awful, I'll have a subtitled release, which I'll watch anyway. Seriously, stop freaking out over an anime being dubbed by a company that releases subs. And stop freaking out over what Funi did to DBZ. They've learned, they've fixed their problems. Give them a chance, or just don't buy it.

Well, at least it's somebody other than 4Kids licensing anime for the U.S.....I haven't seen many dubs from Funimation other than Yu Yu Hakusho and Dragonball Z, so I'll just have to wait and see how this dub turns out. If I do end up investing in Kodacha (I actually haven't seen this yet, but it looks interesting), I'll probably wind up watching the subbed version, anyway, so it doesn't matter that much to me if the dub is crappy or not.

Yeah... Too bad the same can't be said of TokyoPop. While Funi seems to be listening, TP just seems to outright ignore every ounce of criticism they get.

Kodomo no Omocha is coming over finally! Yay! I'm so happy. I get to see it finally. the manga was just awesome. I hope the anime is just as cool.

I don't have a problem with it being dubbed. Usually the dvd will have the option of sub or dub. that's something I can totally live with. It's when I hear news of it falling into the hands of companies that aren't known for subbing anything that I start to panic. (Like the news about 4Kids and Tokyo Mew Mew) that's when I would really start to panic. But I don't think that Funimation is too much of a threat to that.

So I really am looking forward to this event.

Lots of companies are licensing anime, it's just that people (with good reason, I'll admit) bring more attention to what the bad companies pick up (or shows that are licensed before their run is finished, which means a lot of fansubbing groups drop the show. People hate that...)

One thing I know is going to be messed up *I agree with Umino on this* is that all the japanese formalities are going to be messed up. Like when Hayama starts calling Sana by her first name, and the second time, she slaps him because of it. How the heck is FUNi going to do that scene? And, one scene in Episode 13... the scene with Tsuyoshi's father, and when Hayama pulls out the Nori-nori machine. "bald asshole, bald asshole" and it goes on and on...

Overall, from FUNi's reputation... I think that it MIGHT not be that murdered. at least all the japanese formalities & perverted things Hayama does.

Kodocha is one of my favorite anime, and I'm glad to see it getting a domestic release ^_^

As for a dub of the anime...who cares? I can tolerate ANY FUNimation dub (even Dragon Ball Z, if only for it being unintentionally hilarious), so I'm not the least worried.

i just wish i could have seen more fansubs first. i don't consider this a good thing because whether the dub is good or not, i can't see the subs because i can't afford r1 dvds. also, i'm not too thrilled about the voice acting. funimation tends to use the same VAs quite often, and there are so many kid roles in kodomo no omocha and so many VAs that can't play kids well.

I think this is excellent news! "Kodocha" is much to great of a show to keep hidden in places where only the most hardcore fan can find it, it deserves to be seen by many people. Now as I see this whole situation of people thinking FUNimation will ruin the show, I honestly don't think that's the big issue here. Most people who are fans of "Kodocha" don't give a flying crap about dubs, and why should they with this show? After all they've been watching it subbed for years, why should the thought of a dub (On a billingual DVD no less) bother themm esspecially when FUNimation always releases their shows on billingual DVD's (If this were 4Kids I'd understand)? The answer: It doesn't. No, what I believe everyone is REALLY upset over is the fact that the show will no longer be free!

That's right, I believe people are mad because they can't download the fansubs anymore to watch their show, now they'll have to actually pay for them! Which is one of the reasons why "Naruto" fans don't want anyone to pick up the rights to that show until it ends. Because if someone picked up the show to release in America, well then everyone couldn't download it anymore now could they? I think deep down inside this is the big issue with "Kodocha" getting picked up. It's not the dub, it's not the DVD's, it's the fact that people realize that now they have to pay for their right to watch it. Anyway, that's my two cents on the issue.
