Is it the re-issued version that is released by volume and not boxsets? I want to get it but it's so expensive. :? Originally, weren't they $4 tops?

I need to re-buy vol 1 of the CCS manga. My copy is slowly starting to fall apart, but first, I want to finish reading the rest of the manga before I go back and re-buy the first 6 vol. I still haven't bought vol 8 yet. I've only seen it once at Walden's and haven't ever seen it again. Is it out-of-print or something?

I have it. Yes, it is the first three volumes re-released as '100% authentic'. It's a beautiful release. The box is tough, especially compared to their other manga boxes, the MKR ones. This one's sturdy- comparable to the RBHS anime box. The box itself is deep red with yellow on the spine; the background of the box has that circular design that's on all the Clow Cards, just blank- not a specific card. One side has Sakura and Kero-chan in costume, the other side has a montage of costumed Sakuras. The books themselves each contain a Clow Card bookmark. Honorifics are KEPT! Also, the first and last pages of each book have color art on one side; in the front of the book this has the 'other titles you may like' list. These are of the kind of paper that color pages in those big books of art. The second and third volumes both the first time around, and this time retain their original covers; the flipped volume 1 had a new cover and has the Japanese cover this time.

Hope that all made sense.

Isn't it odd that they didn't use the honorifics for vol 8-12 of CCS, even though those were "unflipped," but now they're using them in vol 1-7?

you see, different translators for each season. 7-12 were done by Anita Sungaputa and 1-6 are translated by:

Translator: Maria Simpson.
Additional Translation: Athena Nibley and Alethea Nibley
English Adaptation: Carol Fox

It may have more to do with the editor, Jake Forbes. He's probably the one in charge allowing it to be done, and it's not like a translator can't do a translation that doesn't include the name endings if they want to or have to. Tokyopop left in the name endings in CLAMP School Detectives and had a note from Jake Forbes asking for feedback... I'm guessing this means they got lots of positive feedback.

Pure OTF-brand speculation though :D

EDIT: Just to clarify, Jake Forbes is the editor for ALL of Tokyopop's CLAMP manga. My point is that he's probably the one who could set a policy like this.

It's good that they're starting to use the honorifics in manga. Mabye they'll start doing this for official subbed anime one day. Now, I don't have to guess at what they're calling each other by. Since Tokyopop originally didn't include the honorifics at the end of their names, I had to say the honorifics mentally, sort of, while I'm reading, but I always wondered if I got the right honorific for the right situation, if what I said made any sense to you at all.

Meilin isn't in the manga. This makes me sad. ::sniffle:: However, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying the subbed DVDs. >_<;

I'm so glad Tokyopop is redoing CCS. I bought the first box set Wednesday. I mean, their annoying use of slang in the translations is bad enough, but when they actually get stuff wrong I just can't stand it! Now, if they would only redo Sailor Moon...
I am a loser!

sometimes they do. My Ai Yori Aoshi DVD does, for example.

You mean honorifics as in -san, -chan, etc? Since it's in Japanese, shouldn't they be translated or omitted. If they are going to write Sakura-chan in English, it wouldn't really make sense and the manga wouldn't really be fully translated in English...

In the TokyoPop manga that I've seen in the last year, they've been having a page that will talk about honorifics and such. Their way of explaining the use and meaning of it. I actually find it refreshing that they do that. The honorifics actually explain alot about how particilar characters are viewed and such. I find english doesn't always hit those things with quite the right word.

Besides, learning a little something about another language never hurts. ^_^

o_O; um, if you typed/wrote "Sakura-chan", it wouldn't sound funny at all, becuase it's romanized Japanese. It makes plenty of sense. All they have to do is include a footnote or a page about the honorifics and what they mean.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I used to agree with this... but having read several manga that keep the honorifics, I'm definitely warming to the idea. Although I tend not to like leaving untranslated Japanese in a manga - especially when the general idea of honorifics can usually be conveyed well enough in English - it doesn't bother me since I understand their meaning anyway, and the result is that the overall meaning is conveyed to me a bit better.

Well, I have read some manga where the honorifics were translated and "sensei" was changed to "Mr.So-and-so". It does get kind of annoying. But if they include footnotes, that's another story...
