Manga/Manwa
This topic is devoted completely to Manga and Manwa. What are your favourites? Why? Are there any manga/manwa you like that haven't been animated? (Just in case someone doesn't know, manga is Japanese while manwa is Korean)
I'm a manga person, myself. I'd rather buy manga than anime. Here are my favourites:
1) Paradise Kiss (manga). It is, IMO, the best EGL manga available in English. The characters are great, and I love the art. It's my absolute favourite, as you can tell from my screenname.
2) Kill Me Kiss Me (manwa). There's only 1 volume out in America right now, but it's awesome. I absolutely adore it! Awesome characters, beautiful art, wonderful plot... everything is just cool.
3) Forbidden Dance (manga). Yet another loved-one. The art is the best part about this. It's surprisingly Takeuchi-sensei-like, but not as rounded. There are 3 volumes out right now in English, with the last volume set to release in May (I think.)

STUPID QUESTION : What's manwa?
I don't read that much manga, but I'm in love with the FAKE manga series. Their is only 5 out of 7 have been released in America [6-7 are in backorder]. Some people think the style is freaky, but I love it. I think it's hilarious and I love the character persoality and design.

And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

Yes, Manwa is Korean. I thought I posted that, but I may not have. Sorry for the confusion!

I swear, I don't remember reading that part in your post. o_o; I read it again and saw that you gave a discription of what manwa is. I apologize.
I haven't read any Manwa so I can't list any personal favorites.

Manga:
Favorites:
1) Ranma 1/2 - don't care for the anime, but I love the manga. Rumiko Takahashi draws some of the funniest expressions and scenes, and I love so many of the characters. It's repetitive and goes nowhere, but I read it for pure fun and nothing else.
2) Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon - Do I even need to explain?
3) Chobits - Great story, very emotional, and kept me on the edge the entire time. Cannot stand the anime. And as always, Clamp's art kicks ass.
4) Slayers - Whether it's the actual manga or the "OAV" mangas, I'm always cracking up.
5) Ayashi No Ceres - I love both the manga and the anime of this, but I like how the manga is more in-depth (as that's the case with most). Watase Yu's style is gorgeous, and it's full of grand shoujo-goodness.
Ones that I wish were animated:
1) Mars - God, how I love this story. It's wonderful, gripping, touching, and Rei...ooooh, my sweet, sexy Rei..*drools* The art style is gorgeous, and a bit more realistic than most.
Part of me really, really would love to see Mars animated, and another part of me doesn't want to run the risk of seeing it messed up in the slightest.
Manga I don't like:
1) Excel Saga - LOVE the anime, but for the life of me I just cannot get into the manga. It's too wordy, and it BORES me to tears. Something about not actually seeing Excel animated just turns me off on it.
2) Love Hina - DEAR GOD..*twitches* "Oh, keitaro, you bastard! *SMACK*" "Keitaro..I...I lo-*Keitaro falls on Naru* KEITARO, YOU PERVERT *SMACK*" "I..I love you, Keitaro, but....I....*Wind blows, skirt flies up and Keitaro glances* KEITARO, THIS IS IN NO WAY YOUR FAULT, BUT YOU PERVERT *SMACK*" Need I say more? -_-

Manga:
Favorite:
Love Hina- I just love it.
Video Girl Ai- The ending almost made me cry because I was so happy, and I don't cry easy. The whole thing is an emotional rollercoaster, and quite well-done.
I"s- Go here and read it, if you like. I love shonen romances, and this is no exception. It's a love story from the man's point of view. I started reading it at the before-mentioned site, and it got me so hooked that I read the whole thing in the space of a few days.
Excel Saga- I just find it more enjoyable than the anime was.
Chobits- What do you know, Clamp finally used an art style I like (their usual tall, gangly people don't appeal to me). And Chii is cute, so very cute...
Ah! My Goddess- It's another one of those manga that had only a fraction of it animated (as far as I know, that's true of everything on this list to some extent. I"s got it the worst...). And I would give my right arm to be in Keiichi's shoes...
Manga that should be animated:
Parallel
Monster Collection
Pastel
The ending to Love Hina
Manga that never got properly animated:
Video Girl Ai
I"s
Ah! My Goddess
Ranma 1/2 (this and AMG have at least 15 volumes of material that haven't been animated)
Excel Saga
Manga I don't like:
Saber Marionette J- Okay, I really do like this one, but the way the artist draws breasts, I don't. I like breasts, but not when they look like they're going to detach from the girl's chest at any moment...

I'm a huge fan of CLAMP and I love all of their manga. My all-time personal favorite is Cardcaptor Sakura since it's the series that first introduced me to CLAMP and I'm more attached to it's characters than the characters of CLAMP's other series. I also love the Escaflowne Shounen manga and Fake. The only thing I don't like about the art in Fake is how they close up on the eyes...it just looks kind of strange, but everything else is great. The only manwa I've read has been the Digimon manwa from Tokyopop which is just based on the anime, but I still like it.
"If we can''t comprehend the plan at hand, how could a higher plan make any more sense? I'd say you can only be a martyr if you know what you are dying for, and choose it"-Elphaba
"Those who made mistakes blame themselves and close their hearts. It's impossible to fix a mistake. Man can't return to the past. That's why we drink. Drunks, lushes, sliding alcohol down their throats to dilute the memories that can't be denied.-Vash The Stampede"

Favorite manga:
Vagabond - Based on the novel "Musashi," it chronicles the story of the legendary "Sword-Saint" Miyamoto Musashi. Awesome art, great fight scenes, interesting characters and some insight in to the Zen/Bushido philosophy of kenjutsu. I love the theme of how Musashi starts out as an animalistic thug, but slowly disciplines himself to be a real samurai.
Blade of the Immortal - Awesome art and fight scenes. The story and characters are 3-D and interesting. It also has a strange nihilistic street-punk feel thats rare in samurai mangas.
Lone Wolf and Cub - The original samurai manga. A classic story of revenge, bushido, and politics. The art is distinctively "unanime" and the flow of the story never drags. Itto Ogami is the one of the greatest badasses of manga, and his son is one scary three year old...
Legend of Zelda manga (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Oracle Series)- You can't go wrong with a traditional fantasy quest series. I love Zelda games in general and the art is spectacular. I like the Link/Zelda romance, and the Ocarina of Time Link is cool. I wish they made it longer though.
Chobits - I love how CLAMP explores the theme of love, make-believe, and technology. The "City with No People" allegory was a nifty idea, and Hideki is alot deeper than the typical horny male lead. The art is awesome (and the women are hot...)
Love Hina - Its a funny little manga that has its surprisingly serious moments. I like how Keitaro changes from a total dork to a kinda cool guy (learning martial arts, getting into the top University in Japan, studying abroad, being the stiud-muffin to an entire dormitory of girls...) while still remaining a pretty nice guy. The art is nice, and the girls are cute as well.
Shirahime Syo - I'm assuming this is the Snow Goddess miniseries by CLAMP. ^^;;. In any case, I LOVE the art. Its worth buying just for that. The traditional, sad love stories are nice, altough I wish there was some larger storyline (and a happy ending...)
Pokemon (Pikachu series) - The art is great, and I love how they add a more serious spin to the TV storylines. The characters look great, and Ash isn't half as stupid as he is in the anime. The Haunter story arc would make a great OAV or movie.
I haven't read that much Korean manwa. The only one I know is Priest, which is kind of interesting. Its really stylish, and is kind of a Western-horror genre mix. Its also a really gory, blood and zombies kill-fest with fallen angels and whatnot.
Would Chinese comics also be considered manwa? I happen to like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The translation is really stilted, but the art and fighting is great (plus its fully colored!). There is also a tragic love story about Li Mu Bai that is the prequel for the events in the movie.

I don't think I've read any Manwa. However, I love manga. My favorites are a huge list. You would have to refer to the first page of the manga collection thread to understand what I mean when I say 'HUGE'.
My top five faves would have to be:
Boys Over Flowers: The story is cool. Girl against school of snobs and nitwits. And the head of the F4 likes her. What more could you want!
Sailor Moon: Tiff said it best. To be more exact, I love most magical girl series.
Anything by Tomoko Taniguchi (Call Me Princess): If you haven't read anything by her....you need to. It's so romantic and cute. Alot of high school relationship stuff. And really cute metal heads
Most anything from the Clamp universe: Do we really need to go into reasons? I've raved enough about them in the Clamp thread.
Rumiko Takahashi's manga: I bow to your shrine. *bows* the woman is funny and tragic. She knows how to weave a story that will keep you interested to the end. Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Inu Yasha, Mermaid Saga...that's just to name a few.
I'm not sure which manga I've read has been made into an anime. Has Peach Girl been made into an anime yet? I like that series.
Oh wait! Anything from Tomoko Taniguchi would make an awesome anime series or movie! Seeing Leo moving and talking would be just the highlight of my day! That or seeing Princess Prince as a series would be funny.

Manga I like:
- Anything released by US Shonen Jump: I'm a man, and I need my testosterone-laden action fix. *chugs some beer*
- Sailor Moon: Duh. Why else would I be here?
- Video Girl Ai: It's a neat premise that could have taken a much more comical or perverted tone, but instead ended up as a really character-driven and romantic story that hasn't failed to surprise me yet.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion: Somehow, the comic is a lot less aneurysm-forming than the cartoon ^^;;
Manga that should be animated:
- The rest of His & Her Circumstances: Damnit, they ended the cartoon on such a terrible spot. Curse you, Gainax!
Manga that I hate:
- Love Hina: See Tiff's rant. My feelings for this book are echoed there perfectly.

LOL It's nice to know that someone else doesn't think Love Hina is the greatest thing in the world. Derek LOVES it, and I've tried and tried to get into it, but I just can't. It sucks, IMO. And Naru...Naru is one of the huge things that turns it off for me. She's not only a bitch, but she's a USELESS bitch. It's not like Sailor Mars, who's bitchy but for a good reason, and who actually serves a purpose and has a good role. Naru just....blah.Starscream wrote: - Love Hina: See Tiff's rant. Sailor Moon: Beautiful story telling and artwork.
Chobits: So freaking cute, I wish I had a laptop that looked like Legolas...
Anything by Rumiko Takahashi: Awesome artist and storyteller. I love everything I have read of hers. Ranma and Inuyasha are my faves, but the rest are great too.
Utena: Okay, Chu-chu looks a bid odd, but I love it all the same as the other version of the Utena story.
Angelic Layer: KAWAII!!!! Need I say more?
Paradise Kiss: I melt into happy puddles....
Lease fave:
Gravitation: I just don't get it, why does everyone think it's so great? I find it really, really boring and I just want to kill that kid who is always depressed.
Love Hina: *See Tiff's rant*

Paradise Kiss: I melt into happy puddles....
Lease fave:
Gravitation: I just don't get it, why does everyone think it's so great? I find it really, really boring and I just want to kill that kid who is always depressed.
Love Hina: *See Tiff's rant*

Is it stated whether it is manga or manwa in the book? Or is there no real way to tell the difference...I might have manwa and not even know it O_o
And just to stay on this topic, my favourite manga at the moment is Steel Angel Kurumi. The art is OK, but the storyline is funny ^_^

see, I would love the Utena manga, but a lot of the things in it irk me. Like Juri. I love her anime version FAR more than I do her manga version. And even Utena is a bit more wimpy in the manga. don't get me wrong..I do like it, and I have been reading it..but it's not a favorite.KoiNoVash wrote:

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I don't like Love Hina, either. It's just a retread of Maison Ikkoku, except worse (well, aside from the art). But it wasn't that turned me off from the anime AND manga..it was Motoko. You know, the kendo girl who likes to all inflict pain on Keitaro to make her feel better. And all this becauseTiff wrote:Naru is one of the huge things that turns it off for me. She's not only a bitch, but she's a USELESS bitch. It's not like Sailor Mars, who's bitchy but for a good reason, and who actually serves a purpose and has a good role. Naru just....blah.
Her sister got married and left her, thus making her hate all men until the last two volumes of the manga.
What a bitch. The only reason I kept reading more than one chapter was because Kitsune and Haruka were actually interesting characters.

The way I tell is by the names of the creators. If they have (and this is gonna sound kinda...bad) long, funny names (usually 3 'words' long, like Myung-Jin Lee) it's usually Manwa. Also, Tokyopop has started defferentiating between the two. Sometimes the art is a giveaway, too. IMO, Manwa looks more like game art.Is it stated whether it is manga or manwa in the book? Or is there no real way to tell the difference...I might have manwa and not even know it O_o
Topic! I only own 1 manwa, and it's Ragnarok, and I really like it. It's going to be insanely long, but I think I'll stick with it. I want to start Rebirth and...one other that I can't remember the name of now. (Funny little sidenote...Rebirth is by "Woo," which totally defeats my aforementioned rule. Go figure
Manga-wise...I really don't think I've read enough to have a favorite. Angelic Layer is currently my favorite, I guess.

The easiest way to tell is by the names. If the name sounds Japanese, it's most likely manga. If the name sounds Korean/Chinese, it's most likely Manwa. Also, the names of the characters are a give-away. (For instance, the characters in Kill Me Kiss Me are Jung-Woo, Ga-Woon, Tae Woon, and Kun Kang)crazydiamond wrote:The way I tell is by the names of the creators. Yes, that's what I meant. I couldn't think of a way to put it.If the name sounds Japanese, it's most likely manga. If the name sounds Korean/Chinese, it's most likely Manwa.
