I didn't find much problem with the Pretty Sammy OVA dub, and actually found it more enjoyable than the Japanese version on several occasions. For instance, the guy who voices Biff Standard in English was a lot more fun to listen to than his Japanese counterpart. :) The Tenchi dub regulars are as good as they usually are, so they didn't drag down the dub, either. My main beef would be Misao/Pixy Misa's voice. Her voice in episode one was one that I'd actually call downright horrid, especially for Misao (her Pixy Misa was a little more passable, but the fake French accent did not work well). For the later two episodes, she was replaced by Debi Derryberry (same voice actress as Ryo-ohki and Yugi), who was definitely much better IMHO. Still, Rumi Kasahara owns the role (particularly with what she does with it in the TV series). Speaking of the TV series (Magical Project S), it's a big shame it was never dubbed. It's one title that really deserved to have a great dub (but alas, like the Cardcaptor Sakura TV series and first movie, it doesn't have one, and likely will never get one...)

Lain. It just isn't right. It is too odd sounding. I mean, they try to get the words to go with the mouth, but that leads to excessibe space in sentences. "Lain..................you shouldn't!" I kinda laugh at it. I have yet to see it subbed because I just got the DVD, but the dub is definatly not good >_>

Just about every anime I have seen sucked dubbed, but I would imagine the Hellsing anime being a good dub since it takes place in London anyways. Does anyone know?

To be honest, about the only good point I noticed surrounding the Japanese Cowboy Bebop was that Megumi Hayashibara was in it. That. . . well, that was about it. I'd have to say that I like it a lot better dubbed.

There was also a series I saw several years ago, Sakura Wars, which seemed better dubbed.

A few slip through unharmed, somtimes even improved!

Usually, though. . . dubs are *hideous*

I agree. It's not as if the Japanese cast is bad or anything..they're really good, in fact. I just think it just seems to click more with Englsih voices (why not? 80% of songs sung in the series are sung in Englsih, and all the episode titles are in both Japanese and English), considering that NONE of the main characters are even remotely Japanese. Like you said, the only voice that REALLY stands out in the sub over the dub is Hayashibara Megumi as Faye. Then again, I like her in virtually all anime roles she does, except Neon Genesis Evagelion's Ayanami Rei (too monotone) and Ranma 1/2's Saotome Ranma (female).

Miki (originally voiced by Aya Hisakawa, just to give you an idea of the type of voice he had) now sounds like the child molester who lives down my street! The scenes he has with Anthy are downright frightening due to their unbearable dub voices. Anthy sounds like a 40-year old woman addicted to painkillers. Akio likes to speak really quietly. Saionji is British.

Add this to the fact that nobody ever pronounces Utena's name properly and you've got one shitty dub. Parts of the CWI SM dub were acted out better than this.
The Utena dub is horrible! Anthy is supposed to be a depressed girl, but (in my opinion) she sounds like she's posessed or something. Actually, all the Utena characters sound posessed >_>

I thought the Castle in the Sky dub sucked. Even though Mark Hamill as Musca was nice, and the new rescored music sounded good, the rest of the acting was....ugh. Pazu was ok, and suited the character pretty good, my major beef was Sheeta. The actress seemed to loose her accent, switching between American and a weird English/Australian hybrid.

i thought the yu yu hakusho dub started to get worse after the yukina arc was past.
yugioh, of course.
pocket monsters.
fist of the north star.
the akira dub annoyed me with the way they tried to make the dialogue match the mouths way too much, it just ended up sounding unnatural. not to mention takeshi just sounded goofy.
sailormoon.
tenchi muyo simply because i just hate all of their voices so much, especially ryoko (she sounds like white trash).
shaman king...*shudder*. mortimer-no! rio-no!! lenny-oh god, NO!
inuyasha as there are only a few VAs i can stand (miroku, sesshomaru, myoga- ok, that was a joke).
lain because all the characters who are supposed to be 12 or so all sound at least 30.
and just about every other dub i've seen.

Another bad dub added to my list...Angel Links, due to the bad acting. The way Meifong's voice is in the English dub, it makes her seem very loud and obnoxious and rude, whereas in the Japanese version, she had this very cute voice and was simply very hyper. ^^;; All the other English VAs were pretty bad as well, as they simply lacked enthuasism and all spoke very blandly. I also find it amusing to listen to their grunting and such in the dub. It sounds like their playing with hotwheels and making car impressions or something. ^^;;

1) Anything released by Manga Video in the UK between 1993 and 1998. Always the same voice-acting team. None. Of. Which. Can. Act. The Castle of Cagliostro dub we got made me want to hurt things. Mostly my VCR.

2) Card Captor Sakura. Proving that SM isn't the only anime that got stuck with Valleygirl Syndrome™.

Tomoyo= very sweet girl.
Madison= ...well, didn't anyone else hear that name and that voice and immediately think, BRAT! Ye gods. Poor Tomoyo-chan, getting turned into that!

And another thing, if Sakura's first name was kept, why couldn't they keep everyone else's name, and what in the name of everything was up with "Key-row"'s, voice, and, and, and, ~continues in this vein for about three days~

When it comes to anime, the UK ALWAYS gets the short end of the stick. My heart goes out to you, it really does.

Hehe, thanks. :)

If you'd told me when I was 15 that I'd one day have a multi-region DVD player and bilingual anime DVDs I'd have laughed at you. Kids these days don't know they're born ;)

And to get back on topic, , of both bad dubs and Manga UK, GNNN Appleseed. Worst. Dub. Ever. Can't believe I forgot it.

I'm writing this Sailor Moon/Green Lantern crossover AU fic called "Emerald Sunrise". It's a hybrid of Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance, and Comedy. It's about Ami (Sailor Mercury) getting a new boyfriend who just happens to be a member of The Green Lantern Corps. I'm also throwing in some other characters from other animes and some old Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the late '60's early '70's. I'm also illustrating it as well. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

O.o Wha? The US has lots of anime...

To start off, anything on TV that has been severely edited. That covers SailorMoon, DragonballZ, YuGiOh, Cardcaptor Sakura, and others.

Battle Athletes OAV was pretty bad in the dub department. There was a lot of bad valley girl slang in it that I don't think anyone has heard since the 80s ("tubular", "outta sight", "cowabunga").

Any dubs where characters who are supposed to be children or are child-like sound too old suck.

Love Hina was a terrible dub. Lines were changed to make the humor less perverted (or more) and one character has a hideous Southern accent.

Hentai dubs are usually awful. Dear god.
I think anyone who has seen the dub version of Bible Black can agree. While a couple of the voices were not bad, there were some actors who sounded like they were reading directly off of a script. One girl actually sounded like a man trying to sounded like a woman, and sounded like she was giggling during her sex scenes (as opposed to moaning). The is also full of porn-star talk and crudeness that wasn't there originally.

They can't even pronounce "Urameshi" right...
Besides that, the voices don't fit and [insert comments about dubs aimed at kids here]

Dub Kitsune *shudder*

I still wonder to this day if the dub was a pitch to get Cartoon Network to run in on their Adult Swim lineup, much like the case of Initial D. If not, there's no excuse for the dub being on par with early Digimon (even using many of the same actors!).

Interestingly enough, the dub was created by Production I.G. iirc, that's a Japanese company...
