I heard that the Valley of the Wind Nausicaa dub was cut up so badly, Ghibli forbidded them to release it.
There was a badly-dubbed version of that (called Warriors of the Wind, iirc), but I don't think 4Kids had anything to do with it (I think it was made years ago).

And I seriously doubt there's any racism involved...

You're probably right. Unless of course 4Kids decides to make an issue of it ...
Dinozore wrote:There was a badly-dubbed version of that (called Warriors of the Wind, iirc), but I don't think 4Kids had anything to do with it (I think it was made years ago).
Amazon does have a listing for "Warriors of the Wind", and the reviews do show that it's the dub of Nausicaa. The studio listed is Starmaker/Anchor Bay.

Anyway, getting back on topic ... I am actually semi-curious to see how it will turn out. I guess it's kind of like watching a car race in hopes of seeing a good crash.

Maybe people will watch it, do a search on the Internet, and discover that everyone in the universe hates the title + the fact that it's being hacked to bits ... and maybe they'll stop watching it. I mean, that's what happened to me with Cardcaptors. I saw one episode, did a search, found out about it, and only ever watched it one other time (over a year later; ironically, it was the exact same episode I had seen before). Same with Escaflowne (one episode, search, stop).

Gomen nasai, I'm just getting excited for ACen a few months too early...
Um....at every single convention i've gone to, if a show is licensed by a company, you are not allowed to sell fansubs or bootlegged merchandise.
That didn't stop the booth where I bought Stars a few years back. I saw a fan sub of Yu-Gi-Oh last year. Untill the day arives, when dub is equal to sub, there will always be a way to get it fansubbed. Besides, remember the proabition? When you couldn't drink beer? What happened then? Yeah, my piont exactly.

I still can't belive they did such a racist thing. This is just wrong.

I've been hunting down cute Mew Mew pics like mad incase 4Kids decides to kill off the good sites to make their version absolute.

I'ma join in on the letter writing campaign started over at animeondvd... *sigh*

But at this rate someone ought just make a "Shoujo Uncensored" site. -_-;;

Errr, since the issue here is the TMM dub, what about an uncensored site for that show only? Also, I don't know of any other very censored dubs of shoujo anime besides BSSM and CCS...besides the name, "Hollywood Mew Mew" hasn't been shown yet, so we don't know how much changes are going to be done, do we?

Whenever it does come out, I bet someone will have something about the changes, though that person wouldn't be me since I don't get the right channel. Though I'd be interested to see the site!

I just sent an e-mail to one of the newspeople. NONE of the executives even LIST their e-mail anywhere on the site, or anything else.

Honestly, they should have a way for people to contact them online. jerks.

Why? So people can send flames to them about what they're doing? I wouldn't include my e-mail either if I were an exec.

They can't "kill off the good sites." ANYONE can make a website on whatever the hell they want to, as long as the content isn't illegal (such as child porn and bomb-making or whatever).

By the way, complaint e-mails to hack-dubbing companies don't do shit. If results were feasable, all the flames to various companies over the years would have worked by now. Don't even bother. Letter-writing can work.

FUNimation is quite different from 4Kids, though. They've released their titles on DVD bilingually, and they've improved substantially from their early DBZ days. Their dubbing has gotten much better lately (really impressed by the two eps. of Fruits Basket that I saw), and from what I've heard, their releases have been pretty good too. There are a few things I'm a little iffy with FUNi on (such as several low-ep.-count releases and treatment of the dubs for shows they aim on TV), but they're all minor things to me. I'd definitely be pretty satisfied if they picked up the license to a title I want to see (unlike if 4Kids got it).

I mentioned things they've done pretty bad with: ancient mythology and voice acting.

I gave some advice about what would please purists, and I said I knew why Electric Soldier Porygon wasn't shown. anyone who has any knowledge about that certian episode would know why... 700 kids with seizures from that... *shudder*

Actually, I looked up the link that Marioknight posted about the letter writing campain and the letter that they formated for it looks quite reasonable. I'm sure if we send out enough of them to 4kids! that they might actually take enough notice and take our side seriously. I'm sending mine out tomorrow morning. I know it's not the best solution, but at least it gives us a chance to let our voices be heard in some manner.

This really depends on your opinion of "illegal". I remember when I was watching Pokemon like crazy (back in the day ...), and I had found one really good site that had little audio and video clips. The audio clips were especially good, because they had the Pokemon theme songs from other languages.

Anyway, one day everything was gone, and the reason cited was that they were forced to remove all media. Other sites I had bookmarked with little clips here and there also had to remove their content eventually. As a result, I would say that audio/video stuff would likely get taken down.

I don't know how crazy they'll be about pictures (i.e. screen caps), but I do believe that 4Kids would have the right to ask for the material to be taken down. My knowledge of legal stuff in cases like this is pretty much zero, however, so don't take my word for it.

Anyway, I wonder if other shoujo series are now in jeopardy of getting the 4Kids treatment. *looks worriedly at Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch*

I think shoujo series are safer than shonen series as a whole, since most anime aired on TV seems to be shonen (including a fair number of bad dubs like DBZ, YGO, Fox's version of Escaflowne, etc).

I realized something bad about this dub last night. There's already a manga release of TOKYO Mew Mew in English--I know becauase I have it. Even if there are drastic dialogue changes and name changes in the HMM dub, won't it confuse people that this manga and the anime have similar names and that the characters look alike?

Okay, 4Kids, I can understand Americanizing the dialogue, but changing the name when there's a less edited manga release is going to cause confusion.

Let me rephrase: 4Kids could ask that the site take their media files down, such as pictures, video clips, sound clips, and scans, but they can not prevent people from making fansites. They can't control what people say on their websites.
