Azumanga Daioh

Post by Big_Senshi » Wed Mar 17, 2004 8:32 pm

Hi everybody. Sorry I haven't been by in so long.

Anyway, Anybody here read Azumanga Daioh? I love it. It's character driven(which is good) and is on eof the funniest manga out there. Basicly it's a group of friends getting through high school.

However, it has no magic, no high-tech mecha stuff, or anything out of the ordinary. Souds boring? You couldn't be more wrong. The antics that happen keep it funny and informative.

My fav character is Kasuga, Ayumu aka Osaka.
I've written too much. Anyone else a fan?

Sorry about that, MairoKnight. No one had posted in over a month and I didn't want to revive a "dead thread". Again, sorry about the trouble.

I've seen the first DVD last weekend. It was hilarious, and very faithful to the equally funny manga.

So the dub is equally as good as the sub and the manga?

The dub is one of ADV's better efforts for a while, and is VERY faithful to the Japanese script. The only voices I didn't like were Kaorin's (too whiny) and Osaka's (her dub voice sounds too old, and coupled with her Southern belle accent, just doesn't deliver the same impact as her Japanese voice).

How many episodes are listed on the first DVD? I heard that each episode was 8 minutes and there are 26 episodes. So...just wanted to know if that first DVD is really worth $30. :?

Oh I bet it's worth it! I DL'd it fansubbed and I loved it! I hear the dub isn't bad either. The Anime Network is airing it too.

Miss Yukari kicks ass! XD

And Mr. Kimura is pretty cool too, he's just so random.

Yes the dub is good.

Osaka has a 'Texas' accent now, which is pretty much same as an Osakan one.

I saw the dub on the ADV free DVD thing with my NewType USA. The dub wasn't horrible, and I did enjoy watching it. The sub was good too, but I was too distracted to actaully figure out what they were saying.

I think I might stick with the manga more than the anime. Cheaper to buy manga too :D

I'd reccomend this to people for quick good laughs, and no real plot except getting through school (which a bunch of us can relate to).

How do they handle the cutural jokes on both the official sub and dub of Azumanga Daioh? For the fansubs, they always had a side-note in-between the episodes that would explain some of the stuff that only Japanese would know.

A 12-page booklet is given out explaining those kinds of things. Though by then, I read the manga so many times I didn't need it ^^;

I kind of like having it in-between the episodes rather than in a booklet because I'm too lazy to read a booklet. ^^;; Does this mean they kept the cultrual jokes in-tact in the dub? The one thing I'm most concerned about is Yukari-sensei. She was an English teacher in the original, so did they change her to being a French teacher or an English literature teacher in the dub?

She's a Spanish teacher, just like she was in the Englsih translated manga.

She's still refered to as an 'Language' teacher. Of course for Azu Manga Daioh, it don'st really manner since English is just

'Blah, blah, blah"

Oh, that's good. I'm glad they decided to make her a Spanish teacher, since even though it's a different foreign language she's teaching than the original, the basic point of the joke is still there.

I got the box this week. I. ADORE. IT.

Seriously. It is my new Favourite Thing Ever, and I love every single little tiny thing about it.

But especially Sakaki. Sakaki is The Queen Of Everything. :D
