Characters butchered in the move from manga to anime

And that's one reason I actually kind of like him. I used to hate him for being the stereotypical male who saves the helpless girls all the time, but that was before I viewed the entire anime.
I have other reasons that don't need to be mentioned here...this isn't the Mamoru topic.
To be back on topic, I do actually favor the manga versions of Haruka and Michiru...they seem to have less of the "suave and perfect" aura (not that they ARE that way, but they can seem that way) that they have in the anime. I also like the way that in the manga, the Outers and Inners pretty much join together in the Dream Arc, while they never combined in the same way in the anime (with the exception of the Nehelenia Arc, the Outer Senshi stayed aloof in the SailorStars season even though they had appearances).

(Sowwies for posting into a old topic! Gomen Nasai!)
Full Moon- I hate the entire Anime. Especially Mereko! Shes turned into this possesive, crazy girl for Takuto when in the Manga she DOES love him...in the begining.... And my precious Izumi was turned into a villan ;_;
Pita Ten- No one turns Ten-chan into a little background charater and gets away with it. The manga version is so much darker, Misa's misson in life wasn't to bring happeness to others in the manga. And shia has more a back story (No..everyone has more of a backstory in the manga)
Sugar Sugar Rune- How do you turn 8 volumes of Non-stop plot moving to 51 episodes where 80% of them are fillers..? Its sad really...most of everything is changed. At least the animation is adorable
Ouran HighSchool HostClub- They turn Renge into this fequently appearing charater, when she rarely appears in the manga. I don't like Renge very much. >.> Don't like her at all...
I agree with Hiedeki and Chii's anime versions. But I can still tolerate the anime, because Chii is adorable.

Im glad ya did Queen this topic was an interesting read. Some manga characters are okay when crossed over. After reading the Dbz manga I realized that it can be dragged out even in book form the plots so I have no complaints there.
But the Manga versions of Sailormoon too many characters personalities just didnt seem right in their anime forms. I seen alot of people say that Mamoru had no personality in the manga and I wonder if they read the same books I did. When he became a servant of the Dark Kingdom he did in fact take a life, albeit it of a nerdy guy whose identity he assumed to get to Usagi and the Ginzshou. To me that is alot more spicy then calling the woman you love names and treating her like crap. Sure he was the one who got captured all the time but to me it was nice seeing that. Growing up stories always protrayed females in the situations. Ya always seen the hapless woman trapped by a monster or dragon or tied to a railroad track and some big strong male had to come save her. Well for once the tables were turned and I liked it.
As for other characters I agree about Ami, not the whole career thing but her attacks were downplayed. IN the manga she was more willing to risk her body to do things to get the job done, one of my favorite panels is where she lept out of a high story window into a pool of water to transform. You just dont get that anime Ami would do that.
Hotaru was another character that I felt manga wise was better, I liked that even after she became a child again she showed high intelligence played the violin and the whole family situation with the outers was touching. It turned Haruka from the mean tomboy that I thought she was because of the Anime to a loving caring person. And it definately redeemed Michru who after watching the anime I thought was just a mindless tramp who only followed what Haruka would tell her to.
Ugh I do not want to go on about Rei makes my head hurt so I wont even start. I just want to know how does Mysterious and liking solitude and maturity= mean ass wench who treats everyone around her like crap and chases men which clearly was not the personality the original character had?
Other then that not many manga to anime characters aggreviate me anymore because ive become used to the fact that for some strange reason serious manga characters are going to become bumbling perverts, or ditzes who cant handle power so unless I really become attatched to a manga story I dont let it bother me no more.

this is a good topic
I think characters that where changed negatively from manga to anime are Kikyou and Kagome from Inuyahsa
Kagome in the manga I personally find alot more mature and tough in the manga than how she is portrayed in the anime. In the manga she doesn't always stand on the side lines and just stare at Inuyahsa and company as they fight. She is also in my opinion more level headed and resourceful in the manga than how she is portrayed in the anime. And she doesn't seem to have that annoying "oh, I'm not as good as Kikyou" way about her that I see in the anime. What I've always respected about Kagome is that, even though she is presented with alot of evidence of how powerful and skillful Kikyou is compared to he, she never whines and laments that she isn't as good as her. She seems to take it in stride and goes at her own pace of development.
Now in the Anime, Kagome really gets on my nerves (even though I love Yukino Satsuki's performance of her). The anime really embellishes her negative traits and make her too whinny and pissy over very trivial things. And she abuses the Osuwari (sit boy) command way to much. Kagome in the manga sits Inuyahsa but only when he really is making an ass of himself, in the anime Kagome sits him at every opportunity, the anime goes ang through in sits when they weren't even there originally in the manga. The filler episodes really kill her character the most, making her appear ditzy and flaky and bitchy who doesn't know when to when to butt out of other peoples business.
And Kagome was much prettier in the manga. She has a much more mature look to her and her hair isn't as shaggy and scruffy looking. I don;t like the way she looks in the anime at all, she looks so plain, its as if the anime went out of their way to make her look unattractive.
Now for Kikyou, I actually think that she isn't the horrible cold bitch in the anime that she is made out to be by fans. Actually I think that in some areas the anime down played Kikyou "bitchier" moments in show than how it was presented in the manga. I don't really think the anime made Kikyou worse in the anime exactly just really down played her presence and her role in the series. She has alot more presence and holds a much stronger role in the story than what the anime gives her. The bitterness between Kikyou and Naraku and the special conflict these tow have with each other is much stronger in the manga than in the anime and in my opinion much more twisted and entertaining. However I will admit that in some cases the anime does makes Kikyou appear to cold, arrogant, and even antagonistic when she originally wasn't in the manga. In the manga Kikyou is a strong character who seems to have alot more under standing and consideration for Inuyahsa after she finds out it wasn't him that killed her and respectively stays out of his way. Also she is alot shown to be more of a shrewd strategist in the manga than what she is in the anime. The anime often makes Kikyou appear arrogant and fool hardy and her actions to take down Naraku often don't even make any sense and make her appear stupid and pitiful.

I want to get my hands on the actual Inyuasha Manga so far ive been reading it online. Ive seen some of the show thanks to cartoon network, im glad you posted that cause I had a feeling changes had been made just from what I was reading online.
I still cant understand why serious characters can remain that way. Im all for slapstick but gah sometimes its not needed to get a story conveyed and id like to see more converted characters keep their personalities.

good luck on the Inuyahsa manga. Its almost 50 volumes long and as of last spring
Kikyou dies for good
. and since that major plot element was tyed up hopefully we''ll get an ending soon in the manga. I was pissed when
The anime ended before the manga
But like I said earlier some fans really make anime Kikyou out to be alot more evil and heartless than what she is in the anime. Sure I think that Kikyou comes off a bit more cocky and rude at times in the anime but that's mostly when she is dealing with Naraku. And who cares if she is rude to the main bad guy.
However I notice many people in this thread saying that the way the girls in Sailor Moon where portrayed in the manga was much better than how they where in the anime. That they aren't as ditzy and boy crazy as they are in the anime. To be really honest the fact that they are always dreaming about having a boyfriend and acting all pathetic really bugged me even when I was a kid. Where they more sophisticated in the anime. Also traditionally Sailor Mars has always been my least favorite senshi, since I found her way to obnoxious and mean in the anime. But from what I've read Rei seems to be really different in the manga is more mature and that Sailor Pluto is much less obscure. Since I've never read the manga can some one give me some examples on the differences of Sailor Mars in the manga compared to her in the anime. I heard she was a man hater in the manga. Some how this sounds bit extreme, even for Rei. Is this true?

Yes, she is a "man hater," at least, Rei in the manga is very bitter towards men and does not want to get married at all. This has to do with:
her being upset at her father for being neglectful of her. She also used to be close to one of her father's aides, but then got upset when he got married and left her.
Also, I think I've heard that a miko (a Shinto priestess) is not supposed to marry, or at least she isn't supposed to both be married and be a miko. So maybe Rei in the manga is portrayed as someone who just wants to stay being a miko for the rest of her life.

Thats partially what I got as well Rainbow till I read the Dream Arc, I dont think she intended on staying a Miko by that time. As she grew as a Senshi just like the rest the thoughts of having a love fell to the wayside. And Hes right about the aide Kaido she had fallen for him but he married another to further his political career something her father did which Rei ties in with her mother wasting away and dying. She doesnt want to fall in love with a man who will devot his life to a job and let her fall to the wayside.
And though the subject is never brooched only in artworks and breif hints I still feel in the Silver Millenium before the Four Lords became corupted that they and the Senshi at least flirted some.
basically Anime Rei was way more bossy chased after Mamoru, was very vain and concieted and way to loud.
In the manga shes mysterious, quiet, she could be short tempered at times but only when she felt her time was being wasted. She took her duties as a soilder and protector of her princess way more seriously. And though she still had words of advice for Usagi, she was not so cold hearted or mean about it, especially after she learned that Usagi was Princess and future Queen.
Basically they took a small aspect of the manga character personality which was a temper, aplified it overboard then made her the one thing the manga tried to keep her from. The rest of the Senshi had visions of wedding bells and boyfriends, and that was fine. But Rei didnt want just a crush, in fact I read the manga tonight and she said something along the lines if a Man can make me his world then I dont want a relationship and I dont blame her. Its why I love her character so much, she was the epitomy of mature and they ruined that in the anime.
Ugh let me stop before I go off on tanget I just really think Rei was poorly converted and compared to the other characters they look great in comparassion then what was done to her.

woooow
that sounds so cool about Rei. I need to find me some Sailor Moon manga. Rei sounds so cool and mature. From what you've described it doesn't seem like Rei is a man hater just not flighty enough to accept being some trophy wife or a pawn on some political chess board. I think that shows allot of self respect to not just settle to have an empty marriage with no affection and just material things like money and status. Its so rare to see that in anime/manga girls because most of the time I find anime/manga girls portrayed as being very shallow and bubbled headed who just want to be taken cared of by a guy, and Rei (from what you describe) is so obviously not like that and more independent. I...really like that. I think that shows a wealth of insight and integrity to be that way. I think I could really like this version of Sailor Mars. Why couldn't she have been portayed like this in the anime instead of making her mean and boy crazy. Its almost like the anime was trying to give a giant slap in the face to Rei's character for not liking men very much. Like they where sticking it to Noako
Also I think I read some where that Rei in the manga is supposed to very beautiful and that many men admire her for it and that she finds it annoying. Is this true? The anime doesn't seem to put much emphasis on Rie being a beautiful (even though she really is).
Also...(sorry I know I'm asking allot of questions
) how was Sailor Pluto in her pedestrian form portrayed? I heard she got hacked up as well?

There were times Rei found men flirting annoying specially when they gave her flowers. But at the end of chapter 11 if im getting it right or book 11 theres a panel where guys are buying her drinks and she didnt mind it. Hey why be mean? lol I love Manga Rei she new how to mix serious and somewhat witty. I loved her and Minako in the Battle Exam stories in the manga to cause Minako looked up to Rei. sweet stuff like that should have been kept in the anime but couldnt because they turned her into a bitchy boychasing bimbo and it bugs me. Specially since that didnt really fit any of the Senshi, they did want boyfriends and perhaps husbands but never at the level the anime made it and it was sickening.
As for Setsuna...sigh, besides making someone who wanted to be a fashion designer where the tackiest outfit this side of the universe in the anime. They downplayed a crucial storyline of hers. In the manga and in the anime you see how she dies using her ability to stop time. Only in the anime it seemed abit lamer to me compared to the manga.
IN the anime she stops time to stop the helicopter that she Neptune and Uranus were in was attacked and set to blow up. While noble just irritated me considering how skilled at flying Uranus is supposed to be, and considering how the Outers are skilled soliders and in my opinion would never be stupid enough to fly that close to a know enemy base. But I guess everyone can make mistakes </sarcasm>
IN the manga which is the first time a comic made me cry, Pluto stop time to stop the insane Prince Demando from putting the silver crystal of the past and future together and destroying everyone and everything. By doing this not only did she truly die nobly saving her entire kingdom and family, but it explains the true awakening of Sailor Chibi Moon. It was so touching that I would have loved to seen it anime style, her love transformed Black Lady into Chibi moon but the anime never even touches this. Pluto's sacrifice got the major shaft in my opinion and it bugs me. but at least they kept her close relationship to Small Lady.
Another thing is her voice in the dub, anyone can tell just by how she looks that shes the eldest Sailor, you would think she would have had a more mature voice but no..she sounded like a damned valley girl. And to add insult to injury her beautiful attack "Dead Scream" was turned into a wailing scream that I think gives cats seizures. They have this info on the comparison site to this to its just awful what they did to Pluto in the Dub version, but to me the anime in general screwed her big time.
The outers in general Hotaru got less time her whole backround was changed I think cause they didnt want to go into her father being a mad scientist who experimented on her which he did in the manga. Michiru and Haruka were butchered to, became bullies and cousins in the dub, its just awful ugh.

"Have you been half asleep? And have youve heard voices?
I hear them calling my name."
Is this the sweet sound, that calls the young sailors?
The voice maybe one in the same.
Ive heard it too many times to ignore it,
its something that I sposed to be..
Someday we''''ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lover, the dreamer, and me..."

LOL, I sort of felt the same way you did about Kikyou at first. She wasn't my favorite character and I sort of resented her presence in the story. I thought to a degree she stole Kagome's thunder since she was more skilled powerful than Kagome was. It just seemed like when Kikyou showed up it was like OK...so whats Kagome around for if Kikyou can do all that shikon purifying and holy arrows shooting stuff like too, only better. Its was like...OK, why even create Kagome if you where just going to have Kikyou come come any wayQueen Of Hearts wrote:
I really don't care if shes better/nicer in the manga. I've read the manga and I haven't seen any changes!! (or maybe its just me)
I hate Kikiyo and
I'm glad shes gone for good
But
It has been hinted at that there will be another anime series
And I agree I don't see alot of difference between Kikyou in the anime and Kikyou and the manga, except that the anime down played her role in the story more and they made her more antagonistic. Like I've said before I find some things about Kikyou's behavior in the manga to more devious.
Case in point in the volume 13 of the manga where Kikyou is kidnapped by naraku and he tries to get her to fight Kagome Kikyou:
actually tries to drop Kagome in a river of acid/miasma intentionally trying to kill her after she takes the shikon shard from Kagome. Unlike in the anime when she mearly has some vines come out of the ground and lower her to the bottom of the gorge. And this part really gets me the most, in the manga Kikyou plays all innocent when Inuyahsa shows uo and tries to make like she didn't try to do anything to Kagome. In the anime when Kikyou is confronted by Inuaysha she flat out says "yeah I tried to kill her" Now people might say that Kikyou's behavior was more devious in the anime than in the manga since she comes right out and admits what she's done, but personally if some one is going to be a bitch I would rather be up fron t with it instead of being two faced about it like Kikyou and the manga did. That's just me.
but hey you know what that was way back in the earlier part of the story, Kikyou has evolved since then and I eventually came to like her. So I guess you either like Kikyou or you don't. Personally I think she is one kick ass independent female character that gets a bad rap for being more pragmatic than the rest of the shows characters. Kikyou's methods remind me of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. She does what she has too to get the job done.
that's another thing I was curious about. the pair-ups. In the anime the two girls that where always seen together where Ami and Rei and Minako and Mokoto. I think I read some where that in the manga the pair-ups for these guys where switched and that Minako and Rei generally hung out together and that Rei's natural populaty with the boys annoyed minako.I loved her and Minako in the Battle Exam stories in the manga to cause Minako looked up to Rei. sweet stuff like that should have been kept in the anime but couldn't because they turned her into a bitchy boychasing bimbo and it bugs me. Specially since that didnt really fit any of the Senshi, they did want boyfriends and perhaps husbands but never at the level the anime made it and it was sickening.
Wait, Setsuna wanted to be a fashion designer in the manga? As for Setsuna...sigh, besides making someone who wanted to be a fashion designer where the tackiest outfit this side of the universe in the anime.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience

Many of the girls had multiple goals. Setsuna was into science and chemistry but she also had asparations as a fashion designer. Its in book 9 in the back panel sailor profiles. Its like Makoto she wanted to be a buisness woman and home maker. Hotaru wanted to be a nurse. And its funny and I dont want to spoil it for you so I'll put it in spoiler mode if you want to read it but Setsuna was a jack of all trades cause
In Stars she takes a job as a school nurse
The woman of Sailor Moon were very versitale.
And yep though in the manga they are all pretty close, Minako and Rei were better friends. Heck Minako even snuck into Rei's school using the disguise pen cause she wanted to be like her. And all the girls found Rei's natural ability to attract men to be annoying at times but they knew it was because she had the air of maturity. I think the funniest scene is right after Minako changes into the same school uniform as Rei and two cops notice Rei and flirt, but ignore her and she flips. LOL man I love the manga.
And I really wish they had given the story line about her parents more then a brief mention. They did a story about Ami's mom and how she and her father were divorced. I guess they didnt want to touch the whole Politian neglecting his wife thing. I heard they did keep it in the live action version though but I still havent seen that yet so I dunno.

you know another character that was messed up when turned into a anime. Rie's Grandfather! in the manga he isn't a comedic character that is a pervert always chasing skirts. I don't get why anime has to make every elderly character a perverted one

Yeah I ranted about that to I mean perv grandpa was kinda funny but I liked that Rei who already had it rough with her parents in the manga with one dead and the other not involved had someone stable that she could rely on. Plus Manga grandpa is cute lol.

you know what character got screwed up with her transition from manga to anime? The main character Hakufu from Ikki Tousen!
I just finnished watching the the first season of Ikki Tousen and even though I thought the story plot of the warring schools and all the brutal fighting was cool, I couldn't stand the main character Hakufu. I thought her character was just stupid eye candy for horney teenage boys. She was really stupid and annoying and the anime never missed an opertunity to have her act really idiotic. Recently I've been introduced to the manga of Ikki Tousen and I'm little shocked at how much better of a character I'm finding her. She's still no rocket scincetist but I find her more niave and simple minded than flat out stupid and dumb like how she is in the anime. And there is more detail about her fighting abilites that where either ommited or poorly conveyed in the anime. In the anime Hakufu is is consdered a low ranking fighter with amaturish fighting style. In the manga she is still a low ranking fighter but she actually has more skill and awarness of attacking and defeating her opponents. She has concepts of chi attacks and has skill in using them, like predicting what a fighter is going to do before he does it just by watching them or using a chi attack that doesn't register right away. She is cool in the manga. In the anime she doesn't seem to have any kind of chi attacks and the fient attacks she uses only appears once in the anime and was implied that she didn't even do it consciencely.
From what I've seen in the first season of the anime, Hakufu sucks compared to her manga counter-part. Hakufu isn't the only one eighther I'm noticeing that alot of the characters in this series where altered in their turn over from manga to anime.
