*blink* um, that's exactly what I WAS talking about. Did I ever say you got off-topic? Don't freakin' assume, Rainbow.
*rolls eyes* whatever. So sorry that me disagreeing with you about pointless accents is a touchy subject for you.

Tiff, please. I don't want to fight with you any more. It scares me. I was trying to make peace.  And I was admitting that I did get off topic. I started referring to dub changes in general. I don't know the reason that real dubbing companies choose their character accents, I just thought they might be choosing them for fun in some cases.

I'm sorry if I was offending you, Tiff. I was just trying to share the reasons why I like accents in dubs.

Joey (?)-from Yugi-Oh. I don't know much about this show as I've only seen parts when I happen to pass by the TV when my brother is watching it. The guy has a Brooklyn(I think) accent and his sister doesn't. It's weird.
That's one of the things I said Marspeach, belive me. Probebly one of the 4 voice actors at 4kids does it. and then Shizuka's voice is done by someone else who probebly does 4 voices in Pokemon.

Heck, the same guy who does Yuugi does Yami Yuugi... that is just plain WRONG. for pete's sake, HIRE SOME MORE PEOPLE!!!

Um..nobody's fighting. Why is disagreement always associated with petty arguments? -_- this will continue in PM and not here.

I 've lived in Jersey all my life and I never heard an NJer speak with an accent remotely similar Molly's. ^_^; Perhaps it depends on what part of Jersey you're from because her accent described as a Jersey accent twice in this topic and in another, I think. So I guess you all heard people from another area of Jersey speak... Molly's accent sounds like an annoying awful version of a Brooklyn accent to me.

Tiff wrote:Ayeka (i think that's her name) has a bit of an english accent in Tenchi...It annoys me. It makes her sound prissy, which makes her sound annoying, and i've heard she's actually a decent character in the original

I agree Aeka does have a British thing going on there but her Japanese voice is rather prissy and stuck up too. The tone of Aeka's Japanese and dub voice don't sound too different to me, and to some other people. So you might not like her in the original either.

And my two cents on character accents- it's rather pointless unless the character spoke a different dialect in the Japanese version. Then it makes sense. But it should at least sound natural and not fake or annoying.

Chinese people with English accents? I may be wrong on this, but I've heard that more foreign people have developed real upperclass British accents when they speak English than people who are actually from England.

There's actually a reason for this. For one, Hong Kong was a british colony until just a few years ago. There were many British people living there. And, in most foreign countries, the English Language teachers are British. The British English is more pure than American English, so British English is preferred for teaching it. And, since the student would imitate the teacher, the student would use that accent when he or she speaks English. However, it's also really generic. It's real, but it sounds just like all the others who learned English from that person. There would be no varying dialects, or even voice style.

I agree, Naru's Molly dubbed voice sounds a lot more Brooklyn then Jersey. Let's support NJ! Whoo! ^_^

I shall continue to try to figure out where the heck that voice is supposed to be from.

Where is the person who does the voice from anyway? Eh, whatever.

I just did a little research on Mary Long, Molly's voice actress, and while I couldn't find where she was from, I did find something interesting. She DOES do Catzi's voice too, the second one.

I found that out awhile ago too. I forget how the second dub voice sounds, I rememebred the first one sounded like a gangster, because I was playing a game where I'd watch a Japanese episode and then a dub episode right after it to spot the differences and all. ^_^

Oh, by the way, the Jusenkyo Guide accents are hilarious. I have to admit, I do love the broken English accents. That's because their supposed to be that way. Their suppose to sound funny, and I love the hilarious way the Jusenkyo Guide sounds. It's so funny. His accent is an exception, because it's funny and it was made to be funny. However, accents like Lori's southern accent are very irritating because they aren't meant to be funny and sound really, well, forced. Lori's accent is very painful and out of character and it really is forced. If an accent is meant to be funny it's great, but if it's done for no particular reason, then it seems out of place. Like I said, it all depends on what the character is meant to sound like.

I really can't stand badly done Southern accents, and I've heard more of them in dubbed anime than I have anywhere else. The artist girl from Sailormoon is the worst example. Ugh.

Is it just me, or does dubbed Molly sound just like Janice from Friends? I could imagine her saying, "Hellooooo, Chandlah Biiiieeennng!"

Hey, maybe that's who her voice was modeled after. (did Friends come out before the DiC dub?)

LMAO Wow. I watch Friends religiously, and never made that connection.

Here's the dubbed voices I've sampled recently (besides Yu-Gi-Oh, SM, etc.):

1. Azumanga Daioh: Osaka has a Southern accent (no surprise, since ADV is in Texas)

2. Pokemon Advanced Generation: Touki (Brawly) has that surfer boy accent ("Dude!", "Gnarly","Bodacious", etc.) (To make it easy, think Michaelangelo from TMNT)

3. Tenchi GXP: Ayeka NOW has the British accent (courtesy of Rebecca Forstadt)
"After all these years, you know it's not about control. It's about trying to do everything I can. And for you, it's about setting an example. Everyone looks up to you. They listen to you. If you tell them to fight, they'll fight. But they need to be inspired, and let's face it, 'Superman'...the last time you really inspired anyone... was when you were dead." -- Batman, to Superman, Infinite Crisis, issue 1

I happened to catch the tail end of Yu-Gi-Oh! while waiting for Friends to come on...and there was this brown-haired character, a villian, who had the strangest accent...It was British, but almost a Cockney (sp?) british..like Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. I've never, ever heard that sort of a British accent on an anime character. Usually, it's a more formal british voice. Either way, it completely threw me off, nad then threw me into a laughing fit. It was ridiculous-sounding, and didn't match the whole show itself. It was comical, and looked to be more of a parody dub than anything else. -_-

The AzuDai liner notes say the reason they used the accent was that Osaka and Texas were both in the South of their countries and associated with big business. But I like your explanation better.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."
