Favorite characters that were butchered in dubs

Post by DistantMemory » Fri Jan 16, 2004 6:27 pm

Just what the title says. However, you can also complain about characters that were butchered from manga to anime, anime to musical, anime to video game, etc., etc.

JAPANESE ANIME TO AMERICAN ANIME
~Haruka, Michiru, and Mamoru (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon)
~Sakura, Tomoyo, and Kerochan (Cardcaptor Sakura)

Maybe I will see more lists that vary in greater quantity... :P

anime to dub:

Lina Inverse, Slayers: It's the voice. I cannot stand Lisa Ortiz doing Lina. She displays Lina so horridly, and the complete personality of the character is ruined. Lina is my favorite anime character of all time, and the dub of her makes me want to kill things.

Usagi, BSSM: >_< I even need to explain that?

Tomoyo, CCS: <sarcasm>No, she's not a lesbian. of...course...not...-_-; </sarcasm>

Luna, BSSM: Okay. wtf. She's not a british old lady. SHE'S CUTE! CUTE, I TELL YOU!! She's also not meant to be mean and annoyed all of the freakin time.

Haruka and Michiru, BSSM: ¬_________¬

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Makoto from BSSM: How could they make a sweet caring girl into a i'll-pick-a-fight-with-anything-that-moves kind of girl?! Maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but I think I got my point across.

Meta Knight from Kirby: One word: WHY?! WHY did he have to be replaced with some cheap spanish accent from his cool sexy voice?! Why did they make the scenes with him in it less dramatic?! Why in the pie episode did they make him say "I feel...dirty..." when hit with a pie?! HE'S FREAKING OLD FOR GOSHSAKES! It's really sad when a really really old guy (he doesn't look it, believe me) makes a comment that I can make at least ten hentai jokes off of!

King Dedede from Kirby: While he isn't a character I particularly *care* for, his Japanese counterpart is so much cooler than his english one. In the dub, he sounds like an old man from the deep, deep south. In the Japanese version he just sounds like the bully he is, which is kind aof neat when his southern i-dont-know-what-0+0-is voice to his other voice, which is actually rather deep and even sultry.

Chibiusa from BSSM: I kind of like her Japanese self, but in the English version they just turned her into a whiney brat.

Pazu from Castle in the Sky: I never watched the dub long enough to find out about his english self, but I can honestly say his english voice is AWFUL. His Japanese voice is a lot like a young child, very fitting. In the english version it sounds like my dad did his voice! He sounds like he's 30 years old, when he looks no older than 10!
(picture of Pazu to give you an idea:
http://www.wingsee.com/ghibli/laputa/ch ... racter.jpg )

Me: This is coming from the kid who doesn't know what Viagra is!
Ko: It's cold medicine, right?
Our Group: NO!!!
Me: Can I just say?
Dylan: Sure, it's no weirder than what normally comes out of your mouth.
Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Carley: STEVE! STEVE GET OVER HERE AND TELL KO WHAT VIAGRA DOES!
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

Ami from Sailor Moon. And this is based off of the stupidest (in my opinion) dub line EVER:
"How princess-like!" said in a praising tone when Sailor Moon/Princess Serena faints. EWWW!! Ami wants to be a doctor, why the heck would she say that kind of thing? She's the worst of the group to say that!

Actually, my general reaction to dub changes is "ha ha, that's funny!" at best and "oh well, it's probably a cultural change" at worst, so I can't think of any others.

Tomoyo(Cardcaptor Sakura)-Tomoyo is a not a valleygirl, and in the 2nd movie dub, she sounds like some 30 year old woman. Tomoyo doesn't really have much luck in the U.S., does she?

Meifong(Angel Links): It's mostly because of her English voice. In the Japanese version, she had a really cute voice and was just really hyper and energetic, but in the dub, she's loud and obonxious. Geez, there's no need for you to scream the title of the next episode down our throats.

Every character from SM and CCS. I thought the CCS 2nd movie dub voices would be better than the Nelvana dub, but the only voice I liked was Kero. I guess I'll just never like a dub.

Misao/ Pixy Misa, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy- please make it stop. Misao sounds like a whiny woman in her 30s, and Pixy Misa..agh! Worse than dub Ayeka, if you can believe that! All her funny Engrish is gone..

Aino Minako, BSSM- she's always either too spazzy, or too bitchy, in the English dub. And neither of her dub voices are fitting IMO.

All the Outer Senshi, BSSM- I don't even like them, but even I feel bad for the atrocious treatment all of them have recieved by Optimum.

Kinomoto Sakura, Kinomoto Toya, Kerberos & Li Syaoran from CardCaptor Sakura- Sakura became a clueless, "strong" skater, Toya was made into a total jerk, Kero got a horrible surfer accent, and Syaoran became a bully. Curse you, Nelvana!

Kururin, Dragonball/Z/GT- in the original Japanese version, he is hilarious, one of my favorite characters. But FUNimation made him into a super-dork with the corniest lines this side of Optimum and Nelvana.

Konno Mitsune, Love Hina- no comment.

Kanzaki Akari, Battle Athletes- Akari-chan would NEVER speak with such a potty mouth like her English counterpart does.

Kojirou, Pocket Monsters- Eric Stuart as "James" is a painful experience, mainly because he can't act (or sing, for that matter..hard to believe he has a band in real life!), and he screams out every line he says. And his chuckle...dear God. He's the fruitiest character in ANY dubbed anime I've ever seen.

And while I'm on the subject, every character from every 4Kids-dubbed anime ever goes into this list as well (Kirby, Shaman King, and Yu-Gi-Oh! especially). ESPECIALLY if "one voice fits all" Lisa Ortiz is involved!!!

Uncut Dub------Edited Dub

Big O

Eugene Grant- Ok, when Big O first aired (on Toonami) alot of scenes were cut out of episode 8 (Eugene's Eppie). I feel they messed up alot of Eugene's character. In the uncut version, he refers to himself as the 'Creator'. All of this 'Creator' talk was cut out and really affected his 'God Complex'.

Sub-------------Dub

Pokemon

Kojirou/James- 4Kids REALLY screwed Kojirou over. Kojirou has a VERY muscaline (sp) voice, yet 'James' has a VERY flameboyant voice. Infact, 4Kids seems to try to make James as frutti as possible yet tries to cover it up at the same time. Like adding lines like 'Jessie, I LOVE YOU!'. and 'Next time we steal MEN's clothes!'

Kojirou is a pretty fun guy, yes he likes to crossdress (he seems to REALLY like it) yet Kojirou don'st seem to be flameboyant. Unlike James.

Onimeno Kyo, from Samurai Deeper Kyo. He is so cool in the Japanese version. His voice is so awesome, and he's deliciously evil. But, his dub voice is Dan Greene. Yugi, from YuGiOh. And it's awful!!! He sounds sooo stupid!

Asakura You (Shaman King)- He was extremely laid back and had a pretty funny 'lazy voice' to him. 4kids then turns him into some energetic freak.

Meiou Setsuna (Sailor Moon)- I can not believe no one mentioned this one yet. She was once a very mysterious sounding person who's lived for eons, and she suddenly sounds like a 15-year old ditz. Her Dic voice was good, though (minus the time she sounded like Luna).

various Yu-gi-oh! characters (Yu-gi-oh!)- I know Yuugi is supposed to be a bit dorky, but 4kids really pushed it too far. Dark Yuugi sounds like he's about he's gonna start cracking up laughing from hearing his own bad attempt at trying to make his voice 'serious'. Anzu becomes extremely annoying (if I hear her go on and on about friendship one more time....), Jounouchi gets the Brooklyn accent, and Seto sounds like a jerk every single second despite his character development.

Mewtwo (Pocket Monsters)- he sounded really cool originally, I don't quite know how to describe it. In the dub, he sounds like an old man.

various Digimon (Digimon series)- so many to list here. A majority of Digimon lost a lot of their cuteness. Culumon doesn't have the adorable high-pitched voice anymore, Guilmon sounds drunk, Wormmon's ghastly-sounding, Pinocchimon sounds (gangster impression) like a gangstah, see (/gangster impression), Bokomon's some British scholar, and both Impmon and V-mon got the dreaded Brooklyn accent, losing their cute, playful tones. Some, on the other hand, lost their seriousness, like Renamon who had a mysterious aura, which was lost to not staying silent most the time, and Xuanwumon, who was once a godly-sounding, well, god, had to gain a Scotish accent and crack jokes all the time. Overall, I'd say most Digimon were screwed over because Saban didn't like silence, they felt everyone should have some kind of funny accent put on them, and they felt everyone should crack a joke every second.

Metaknight (Kirby)- as a previous poster said, he was very very mysterious, but he got a Spanish accent, and everything went to hell.

Eggman (Sonic games and Sonic X)- he was extremely wacky sounding in the Japanese version, which is kinda fitting for a mad genius who has a bit of a comedic side to him. In America, he sounds like some serious old man, even though he's not overly serious about most things.

Sakura and Kero-chan (Cardcaptor Sakura)- I didn't watch too much of the Cardcaptor dub, and after a long time, I'm trying to forget most of it, but I do remember at least how Sakura and Kero sounded. Sakura goes from a sweet innocent girl to some girl who always needs to sound strong and tough. Kero is the overly cute, small plushie animal character seen in a lot of anime. Do you think he deserves to have a voice that makes him sound like a rude surfer dude?

Colored Man (Rockman.exe)- a clown who is very silly and whacky sounding. Sounds fitting. On the other side of the Pacific, however, we have a clown with some British accent. Can someone tell me what's wrong with this picture?

Glide (Rockman.exe)- so the guy is very polite. Is that some reason you have to give him a British accent? What, is making every polite person sound like some stereo-typical butler the only possible way of indicating politeness? I think not. There are a million ways someone can be polite without the accent.

-_- Um, you can't have a character use Engrish when they speak English normally...

And I don't think Mitsune's character was changed much at all. She still does and says pretty much the same stuff in both versions, she just has that accent (which isn't entirely innapropriate, but that's a topic for another thread)

And I don't think V-mon had an accent.

I can't think of any. I can think of some that were butchered during the conversion of manga to anime, though...

Tuxedo Kamen from BSSM, am I the only person who gets annoyed because Darien's voice suddenly becomes overdramatic when he's Tux and that no one else does this when transformed. Freaking irratating.

I pretty much like all of the senshi in BSSM but I'll just do a few I thought were messed up the most in the dub.

Rei BSSM- in the dub there are plenty of times where the dub made Rei... no I'm sorry.. Raye look like a totally immature heartless bitch. Or as if she hated Serena. How about the episode with that ninja looking youma who disguised herself as an interviewer? They had her keep the Moon Stick when Serena left it in her room because she wanted to be leader. Made it seem as if she didn't care if Serena was in danger, for her own selfish reasons...

Usagi BSSM- Usagi is supposed to be a cute cheerful ditz. I found Serena to be an obnoxious complete goofball, who sounds like a boy going through the voice change stage of puberty and a yodeler.

Haruka and Michiru BSSM- yes they're supposed to be senshi who care about their mission . no they're not supposed to be heartless androids, who constantly try to make wise cracks at everyone else.

Chibi-Usa BSSM- she's not so bratty and whiney in the original. need I say more? I mean mostly in R but still.

Sakura (CCS)- it's like they tried to make her too tough or something in the dub. And she sounds likes a valleygirl. So much of her cuteness is lost in the dub. Hell most of the characters were ruined in this too. Especially Sakura and Tomoyo... but perhaps Sakura more.

~Mewtwo (Pokemon)

Oh God. I forgot about that. I remember, when I finally watched the Subtitled version, I was crying during that episode. When Rei said "If I hated her, would I have kept this for her?" it was soo sad! And the awful dub, when Raye's "She left this in my room! I'm keeping it! I should be the leader!" Raye is easy to hate, while Rei is easy to love. She was completely changed.

I would have to include Ren from Shaman King. For some insane reason, they decided to give a Chinese kid a BRITISH accent. The way he described Yoh as a "good chap" was so bad its funny. I knew then that Fox Kids had officially butchered Shaman King.

I would also include the Snow Dancers from the Sailor Moon S movie. My God, the way they screamed liked Xena isn't dubbing, its a Nazi experiment to test how much sh*t people can listen to without their heads exploding. The stupid thing is, there was actually a part in the dubbed movie when one of them talked. It was right after Tuxedo Mask showed up as Santa Claus and finished his speech. The Snow Dancer said "You don't say?" before attacking. So, now its not that they can't speak normally, they prefer screaming like Xena.

If you just see the tree, you'll miss the forest;
