Bizarre Anime

Post by Vagabond » Sun Jan 11, 2004 1:59 am

I know weirdness in anime is very relative, but once in a while an anime just comes along that makes you blink and say "what the...?" Please feel free to post what you think are examples of such anime. You could say how it is good or bad, just don't get too carried away.

One anime that is bizarre in my opinion is "Grander Musashi." There is a reason why most people have not heard of it - it is a shonen anime... about fishing. We join our young hero Musashi Kazama as he tours the world learning special casting techniques; finding mystical fishing rods, lures and bait; and capturing legendary fishes; while battling evil fisherman rivals and learning the true meaning of friendship. You might think I made that all up as a parody of shonen anime in order to amuse you, but I swear it is only too real:

They dubbed it in a Hong Kong channel and I was "fortunate" enough to watch it. -_-;;[/b]

Cosplay Complex. The basis of the anime is students taking part in Cosplay contests. O_o it was very insane, but it was bizarre in a way that I couldn't take my eyes off of it. kinda like a car wreak. It lasted only 3 episodes, but after watching it to the end I said to myself, "What the f*** was that?"

And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

This one ecchi anime (I forget the name) about a young boy who inherits his grandfather's mansion and all of the hundreds of maids that come with it. I swear the boy went through puberty in the first 30 seconds of this show from all the unwanted attention. All the maids are paid to make this boy "happy," which means helping him bathe and complementing him in school. Poor kid.

LMAO Derek and I LOVED it becuase it was so damn out there.

Serial Experiments Lain - It's just....weird. I couldn't follow it at all, and some of the scenes make you go "what the HELL?!"

Excel Saga - come on. this is the epitome of bizarre, but it's so, so great. XD! Things pop out of nowhere, characters constantly die and come back thanks to the Great Will of the Macrocosm...it's just one big bizarre funfest.

That fishing rod thing just sounds...O_o;;;;

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland - It was bizzare for me because it was NOT what I expected. All the girls trying to get under Miyuki's skirt made me laugh. The chess match was interesting, I was laughing how the pawns would get their clothes ripped off when they died. Bizzare for me, but probably not for anyone else ^^;;;

Hey, I think I have that anime. Its called Hanaukyo Maids. Its pretty funny, although it only lasted 16 episodes. It just sorta stopped, and I don't know whether they finished the series or simply stopped making it. I heard there was a manga out for it though.

Anyway, back on topic:
Master Cooking Boy - it seems like the shonen story structure can be retooled to fit in to any premise. :D As the title implies, its about a boy as he learns about Chinese cooking... finding mystical cooking tools, battling evil cooks, learning about friendship, and so on. This was also dubbed in Hong Kong. Its set in ancient China, so the one thing it has going for it is that it actually explains some real-life cooking techniques, like putting opium into dishes to get people to keep coming back for more (its a real trick used by the unscrupulous cooks.) Its also freaking hilarious the way they overdramatize the dishes. They have blaring instrumental BGM and light pouring out of the entree with everybody gasping after tasting it and what not.
I almost keeled over the first time I saw that. XD

Cat Soup. This show is hilarious, but it's soo f*cked up. It looks kinda cute, but then you watch it. It's gruesome and morbid, and makes no sense. Plus, there's no dialogue, except for three sentences. And none of them are spoken. The dialogue appears in word balloons. And the only three sentences are: "Ah." "Go get two bean curds." and "I'd like 4 bean curds, please." It's something to be watched, but not bought.

Did I mention that the fishing rods actually change during a contest? I mean they literally glow and then evolve, ala Pokemon, in to a different kind of rod. o.0;; After that, they show a little radii chart to show how the stats improved, in an attempt to look cool I suppose -_-;;. Also, in an effort to cram every conceivable cliche in to show, the main hero has a natural talent with fishing, which translated in to an inborn sixth sense to detect where fish are located. Seriously.

I can't believe that I forgot to mention this one: Beyblade.
This one's what you would get with Grander Musashi, (and a zillion other shonen shows) if you replaced fishing rods with tops. You know what, a war declared between the people who like tops and those who like yo-yos is a less insane idea than the premise of this show. Still, at least Beyblade has a logical explanation for its origens (read: crass commercialism) though. The most amazing thing was how popular the whole thing became. I think its like number 7 in America's toy franchise or something. :?

The scary part about Beyblade is its fanboys. I overheard someone rambling on about it (and correcting people with its proper Japanese name, which I've long since forgotten) in the registration line for Anime Boston. I was frightened for a minute there.

Back on topic, the oddest thing I've ever seen is Those Who Hunt Elves. The premise of the show is elf-stripping.

The Japanese name of Beyblade is Beyblade o.o; The katakana says "beibureedo", which is written in Roman letters as "Beyblade" all over the official site.

Anyway, weird anime... Kokoro Library? Kokoro Library is about these three sisters who work in a library. Now, normally when explanining the premise of a show, you'd go further than that... but no, this series is pretty much about three sisters and the work they do in the library.

The first episode is so inane that it's become a joke amongst some anime fans. It involves the youngest sister, Kokoro, becoming a librarian for the first time. She does nothing for a while because the library is the in the middle of nowhere so no one ever goes there, and then when one customer does borrow a book, she gets all downhearted because after a week the woman still hasn't come back. So she has this long trip into the nearby town (and on the way she hitches a ride from a total stranger?!), only to discover that the woman has moved out! Then her older sisters come and find her, and drive her back to the library, revealing that the woman came in while Kokoro was out and returned the book.

They pretty much applied the shounen story structure to a slow-moving show about a girl who works in a library ^^; It's almost a shame that the first episode put so many people off - the series may not be very exciting, but it's sweet and sometimes quite funny. The weirdest thing about it is one of the older sisters' obsession with the youngest sister, Kokoro. It's bordering on both incest and paedophilia X_x

Two words: Tokyo Pig. It's about a pig. And a boy. And the pig's magical snout. I think. I never saw too many episodes because I didn't know about it for very long, and now it's not on anymore. But it's CRAZY. The art is wacky and coloring-bookish, and they talk reallyreallyfast in the dub, which is hilarious in its own right. But the episodes are just sooo wacky and off-the-wall and fast paced because of the dialogue. Not to mention the miniature weather lady that pops up from time to time to say random, or somewhat important, things. Craaaazy.

OMG!!! I absolutely loved Tokyo Pig! It was so funny! It made no sense at all, though. Everything was random, but it was absolutely hilarious. And I love how the pig does all that little stuff. Tokyo Pig is t3h k4w4ii!

Fighting Food-ons! I didn't actually watch the anime itself, but the commercial for it looked really bizarre. I mean, why would you make a show about fighting vegetables, anyway? Another weird series is Samurai Pizza Cats. I mean, talking cats being shot out of a cannon to deliver a pizza? That's kind of strange to me. Not quite as strange as the other series you guys have mentioned, but still kind of odd.

During a cleanup of our C-Drive (my brother has downloaded way too much stuff on Kazaa) I saw some of the weird anime (some hentai, some not) that my brother has. I clicked this one show labelled "Vampire Princess Miyu", but it was something much, much different. I won't go into details. Even some of the non-hentai made no sense. One show was nothing but background music and showing the classrooms of a school for 15 minutes! A schoolgirl then appeared on screen and the subtitle said she had hunger for eating. What did all the shots of the classrooms have to do with a girl being hungry?I could not believe my brother watched those shows. I'll never look at him the same way again.
I am a loser!

I love the tv series of Vampire Princess Miyu, depressing and strange, but I still love it.

The show I would have to label as the weirdest would be AMG: Adventures of the Mini-Goddesses. Seeing them in chibi form and getting into all kinds of situtations was priceless. That and they tend to spoof movies. every episode is like 7 minutes long. this rat, Gan-chan, is always hanging out with them and they always abuse him. I have no idea why he continues to stick around.
Basically the show makes no sense whatsoever. it's purely made for laughs.

One crazy (and popular) anime would be FLCL. I saw this on Cartoon Network once and I had absolutely no clue what was going on. There is this teenage girl coming on to this twelve year old boy, who for some reason has things popping out of his head and can morph in to some robot, and all of this takes place in a town that looks like a giant iron. There are also duels with people smacking each other with electric guitars on motorbikes with J-rock playing in the background. After seeing it I was like, "Huh?" The animation was pretty good though...

Ah, I'm amazed I forgot that, considering the fact that I HATE FLCL...the animation is horrid (IMO), and the stupid girl who smacks people with her guitar drives me crazy. It's just stupid, I think.

I've watched 2 very confusing anime on Tech TV: the afforementioned Laine and Boogey Pop Phantom. In BPP, I could hardly follow who was who, and in both anime, there were some plots that appeared to have absolutely no purpose for later on, and I'm often questioning "Why did that guy go insane and shoot himself from seeing Laine?" "Is Boogey Pop the enemy or what?" "Why did those cops continue repeating the same conversation?" "What the hell is an image of Laine doing in the sky?" and many more.

Also on Tech TV, there was Gate Keepers 21. I followed most of it, but then, there was that ending to the series. Tokyo looks like it's been totally nuked, and then it's suddenly back to normal, and nothing is said to explain it. WTF?

In Kuri-Kuri there's a hospital that jumps and a rhinocerous thing that grows out of someone's nose. The jumping hospital was hilariously odd.
