Here's another one of my favorite misunderstood characters. Masaya from TMM. A lot of fans bash him for no reason and I don't understand why. The only reason I can see why they hate him is because they're Ichigo x Quiche or Ichigo x Ryo fans and don't want to see their favorite couple seperated. At first I didn't care for Masaya myself, but eventually I started to like him a lot. He's really sweet to Ichigo and would never intentionally do anything to hurt her. Sure, there was that one time where he yelled at her when she ran off when the Aliens attacked, but that was only because he was worried about her.

And aside from that one moment, he never seems to get angry at Ichigo no matter how many times she has to change their plans or how many times she goofs up, like falling asleep on their first "date".
Even when Ichigo was really, really, really late on one date because she had to fight the Aliens, Masaya still forgave her for it and he even responded to her feelings!
And Masaya is also voiced by Ogata Megumi-san, one of my favorite seiyuu! I personally think Ichigo x Masaya are my favorite TMM couple and actually one of my all-time favorite anime couples. I just don't understand why everyone seems to hate poor Masaya.

My absolute favorite misunderstood character would have to be Big the Cat from Sonic X/Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure 2.. Just because he's a bit dimwitted hardly makes him a less desirable character. Granted he cares more about that gosh darn frog that keeps running away from him then life itself but it just proves that he is a gentl giant. Most people seem to hate him simply because he "contributes nothing to the plot" ignoring the fact that his frog possesed one of the Chaos Emerald. It just bothers me when people see a dimwitted character and immediately begin to bash their worthlessness.

I wholeheartedly agree about Masaya, although it's mostly because Quiche is one of the anime characters that I hate the most. I think it's the opposite for most people, though. They think that Masaya is boring, just like people think that Mamoru is boring, simply because he's not as extroverted and is more intellectual. People who like Quiche/Ichigo pair probably also like the Seiya/Usagi pair because it's extremely similar except that Seiya's not evil and is better than Quiche for not forcibly kissing Usagi like Quiche did to poor Ichigo. As for Ryou, I guess it's because of his tragic past and his traits that make him not the "nice boy next door" type that Masaya is.

So I support Masaya from Tokyo Mew Mew, at least from what I've read in the manga (and I don't want to judge him off of the anime since I've only seen the dub).

Musashi is mine, of course. :P SHOCK! The most people who hate her are the Kojiro-fangirls, who either hate her because a lot of people pair her with Kojiro who they think is their's and no one else's, or because she hits their beloved Kojiro.

What people don't seem to get is that it's meant to be funny! I don't know why so many people take it so seriously when she mallets or smacks him. Nyasu does the same, yet hardly any one hates him. And Kojiro hits Nyasu!
And Kasumi slapped Satoshi a couple of times and bonked Takeshi in the head with a log (all cut from the dub, which is a pity, since the second was more goofy then violent) and they recovered completely in the next scene!

A lot also thinks she's mean and nasty for no reason, well, she's had a bad past! And everyone seems to ignore the times she's been VERY nice (the Hapinasu episode, for example, and she didn't get anything out of it in the end!) and prefer to focus on ONLY her bad points.

And some kiddies just hate her 'cause she's the bad guy (er, girl.) ^^''

Also, Musashi (along with Kojiro and Nyasu) have more defined pasts and personalities, unlike some other people in the show...

A lot of people also hate her because she thinks she's so pretty. Well, Kasumi is like that too! And- although I know the fangirls will say it's different because he is- so is Kojiro! They're both vain! So if you're going to like Kojiro and bash Musashi, pick something besides her vanity.

I also don't like it when people bash Chibi-usa, saying she was a pointless addition to the show. Sure, she's overly cute, and most people think she's really immature (usually refering to her personality in R) and weak compared to the other kids.
Well, she just started becoming a Sailor Senshi, unlike the others who've been at it for a while, and they're older too. And it's funny when she gets all angry after messing up a Pink Sugar Heart attack.
And she wasn't pointless, a lot of things that happened wouldn't have (or have but differently then they did) happened.

I agree about Chibi-Usa (well, of course, she's my favorite character). I can elaborate...
1) In R, I actually can very much respect her actions. She's overwhelmed with guilt over having accidentally caused her own home to be destroyed, her parents have disappeared, and she's traveling to a strange past. She reminds me very much of a child version of Yaten in the R season, in the way she's VERY focused on her mission at first. She acts bratty, I think (this is just speculation) because she's trying to push people away from her. She's probably afraid that if she lets herself get close to Usagi and her friends, she will lose her resolve to get the Silver Crystal, which she believes she needs to save everyone in her time. Her best part is when the Senshi are captured by Rubeus and she gets sucked in along with Sailor Moon. She keeps trying to undo that energy siphon thing (whatever that weird black crystal is, I don't know what it was called) and it's shocking her and hurting her but she keeps hanging on and then she finally pulls it out.
2) The S season. This is my favorite season for Chibi-Usa. First of all, yes, Pink Sugar Heart Attack isn't very useful. But she rarely cries about it, if ever. She jumps into battle with none of the hesitation and outward fear that Usagi had when she first became Sailor Moon. Her most useful thing, however, is that she (and possibly Usagi and Dr. Tomoe to a lesser extent) is the one who's almost singlehandedly responsible for saving Hotaru from being Mistress 9 and allowing her to get the inner strength to come to her Sailor Saturn form and heal herself of being possessed. If it weren't for Chibi-Usa's friendship, the Silence would've come.
3) SuperS. She's probably the most useful Senshi in that season, since if it wasn't for her, Sailor Moon couldn't defeat the lemures. She was also the only one who was able to properly use the Golden Crystal and call on all the dreamers of the world (another of my favorite Chibi Moon scenes).

Of course, she has her flaws, she tries too hard to be grown-up (hence the crushes on older guys) and she can be quite bratty, to name two of them and she probably has others. But then again, I love her for her flaws too.

Wow. I think I basically just told all my reasons why Chibi-Usa is my favorite Sailor Moon character (and possibly my favorite anime character). I apologize if I've repeated too much of anything I've said about her elsewhere, but I don't remember going into this much detail before. Maybe I should put this kind of stuff on my shrine to her.

YAY! I love Musashi ^^; And I used to be somewhat of a Kojiro fangirl, but it was more of a rabid Rocket-shipper than anything else. I love the two of them together. Not all Kojiro fans hate her :D

-giggles- -points at pairings thread- Yep! Me too. xD

I know not all the fangirls hate her, just a lot of them. I have one friend who's a fangirl, but isn't insanely obsessed and actually really likes Musashi.

Another thing that annoys me is that a lot of people think she's a slut. I have no idea where this is coming from. The clothes...? That must be it, right? I mean, these are usually the same people who think Kasumi is a slut. ^^;; Poor Kasumi.

Kenji (and Haruka) are bashed- most of the time- because they replaced older loved characters, so I expected that a lot of Brock fans would be mad when they got to the Orange Islands. I already knew of Takeshi's return, so I didn't freak. I find him kind of funny actually...

Yes, you said that much better then I ever could, Rainbow! ^^

Thanks, Musashi. And you just reminded me of another commonly disliked character I liked--Tracey! (I have only seen the dub, so that's why I call Pokemon characters by their dub names) I thought he was better than Brock because he only wanted to draw the girls instead of always flirting with them. But that might be because I would rather meet Tracey as a person than Brock. If I met Brock, I would hope that Misty would be around to drag him off like she usually does, or else that something would distract him from flirting with me.

I find it interesting that people don't like the characters who "replaced" Misty and Brock on Pokemon, yet for Sailor Moon fans, Chibi Chibi and Seiya are usually preferred over Chibi-Usa and Mamoru, who, in the anime at least, they seem to kind of replace, role-wise (and in some of their other traits). Heck, I even root for the underdogs in both cases too!

Characters that you like, but everyone else seems to hate

Post by Rin » Sat Sep 02, 2006 2:45 pm

What characters do you like but get bashed a lot by fans. They don't neccessarily have to be your favorite characters.

Relena Peacecraft (Gundam Wing)- Ok, when I first saw Gundam Wing, I'll admit that I didn't like her. I found her annoying. I recently watched Gundam Wing again with a friend and I like her now since she does grow as a character. I even now like the Heero/Relena pairing.

Asuka Soryu Langly (Evangelion)- A lot of people don't like her and I can understand why. She does have some attitude issues. For some reason I've always liked her and she's my favorite character in Eva.

Torhu Honda (Fruits Basket)- A lot of fangirls bash her. I'll admit, she can be annoying at times, but I've never had anything against her. It may be jelousy issues with fangirls which is sad considering that they're animated characters.

Amelia (Slayers)- I'm probably the only one who thought she was cute. She never bothered me.

Did anyone else notice that it's mainly female characters that get bashed? Jealous fangirls maybe?

I agree with you on Tohru, it's sad that so many people don't like her, because, apparently, everyone likes her and she gets "so many boyfriends". What a joke! Okay, like her or don't, that's not what I care about.
I want a LOGICAL explanation as to why fangirls want to bash poor Tohru. If it's simply for jealousy, it's wasted time.

If you couldn't tell it by now, I like Tohru very much ;)

And don't get me started with Anzu from YGO. She must be the bashing target extraordinaire. Fangirls want to see her suffer. (I know since I'm in a community where 3/4 of the users hate Anzu)
Now why? Because she steals Yugi/Yami away from poor poor fangirlish people. Oh what a tragedy (...irony. Beware)

Well, I don't know many other characters that I like, but most people don't. ^^ Yay, lucky me!

*points to avatar* Poor Mamoru-kun... I don't understand the Tuxedo-hate. Fans accuse him of being a pointless character whose only use is to save Sailor Moon/be captured by evil queens. Well, to these fans I say, what do Uranus and Neptune do in S? In some episodes they literally just stand there and have pure-heart angst. In Sailor Stars they are just there to piss Usagi off.

Mamoru has a point. He doesn't do much in part of R, S, and most of SuperS, but he is no more pointless than, say, Sailor Jupiter. Sailor Stars wouldn't be the same without him.

Ah, Shinji Ikari would be the one.

He's whiny and stuff but... seriously, the way he acts is extremely realistic and sometimes I think anime fans would just whine to much themselves.

(I'm not an anime fan really. Just a nostalgic Sailor Moon fan, along with a few other things.)

im agreeing with saying that tohru doesn't deserved to be bashed by fangirls just because she's awesome. (not only do i like her, she's my hero  )

and i don't have the hatred for poor mamoru like some other sm fans do. i admit he got on my nerves sometimes, but he was important. the show wouldn't be the same without him.

I don't think there's many of these for me, because most anime fans don't like the "obvious" characters, but the odd ones. For example, in Azumanga Daioh, Osaka is the weird one and in a normal series, she'd be ignored or disliked, but since it's an anime, she's a favorite. But there might be a few.

Haruko from FLCL. She's kind of a selfish bitch, and is willing to sell out Naota for her own purposes, but her spending time with Naota trying to get him to break out of his shell is, to me, worth it.

Madarame from Genshiken. As one of the most dedicated otaku in the group, he's the one that many real life (*shudder*) otaku wannabees point to as going too far. But as Ferris Bueller said, you can never go too far.

Ichigo from Onegai Teacher/Onegai Twins. In Twins she's a spy and an interferer. But in Teacher she's less so, and she has character depth. I think if they made a third Onegai it should be about her.

And one that's not from an anime, but I think is the archetype of this kind of character is Squall from Final Fantasy VIII. So many people call him a brooder and a whiner, but he's the protagonist and he does a good job of carrying the story, and he does change during it.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."
