Manga Juri: Gee golly, Touga. *flips hair*
Anime Juri: *pops in TATU CD, hops into bed, takes out locket, sets eyes to stare*
Manga Utena: Oww! That hurt Juri! ... you're mean... *sniffles*
Anime Utena: Meet me in the dueling arena that defies the laws of physics! I'll become a prince while random roses appear and Himemiya does various things!
LMAO! Hehe I like their anime counterparts better, and they're my favorite characters in the series.
I like both the anime and manga versions of Utena. But I prefer the anime though because of all the symbolism and originality. And I also think it's better to watch the movie after you've seen the tv series.
As for the movie, I love that too. Especially Anthy...she's so great in the movie. In the anime I wanted to slap her most of the time.
And personally I was a little disappointed with the anime series' ending though. The movie's ending was better, and kinda like wow.

Well...
I like the anime ending, becuase as OTF said, it's NOT stereotypical and generic. Utena doesn't end up with some great prince or Anthy...she gets it pretty shitty at the end (I say she dies, but I suppose it's debateable). And Anthy has awakened, and therefore can leave..but they never really end up together, and I like that. It's different.
LadyFlameSniper wrote:

I have a question about something that disturbs me a bit about this show. I hear that Anthy gets raped--does it actually show the act itself, or only mention it? I'm not sure I'd want to watch an anime with on-screen forced sex.
The rapist drugs her, but when she wakes up, she tells him that it's okay, and that she was awake most of the time...so it's not like some violent, horrid rape scene...there really is no rape scene.
I liked series Anthy. I thought she was pretty. Especially with her hair down.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

I read the manga, and I loved it. It was really strange, but full of so much subtlety and symbolism, and plenty of twists and turns that always kept me waiting for the next issue...I'm actually glad it's over, since that way I won't have to plunk down $5 for only two comics in Animerica Extra ^^;;
I've only seen bits and pieces of the anime, and seriously want to pick it up; all I've seen all the way through was the movie, and my jaw was practically on the floor the whole freaking time. It just got weirder...and weirder...and weirder...
Although the Utena-car scene had me rolling on the floor as to its sheer obsurdity....but I digress...
Oh, and Rainbow, PLEASE edit your last comment again. I know you didn't mean to, but your feelings about said subject kinda hints at what really happened between Anthy and such and such person...for once, I want to go into an anime series completely spoiler free >_<;;

I can see all of you prefer the anime over the manga, and that's fair enough, but there's one thing about the manga that I think is superior to the anime:
No Nanami. What's the point of her being there in the anime other to be an annoying filler character providing useless melodrama and comic relief (all too often in the form of a dumb, over-the-top filler episode that breaks the flow of the main story-line)? Kozue and Anthy, IMO, are far more interesting and essential as far as psychotic characters with brother-complexes go.

I dunno. I kinda started to feel sorry for Nanami toward the end. I think her char is a bit deeper than you're describing. And I enjoyed the filler eps. I think they were a refreshing break from all of the deep, tragic seriousness of the series. They were funny.Rindesayu wrote: No Nanami. I like Nanami, even though she has a lot of um problems. And her character did turn out to be deeper than I initially thought. I wish she was in the manga and movie. I finished the manga at the Animenext con BTW. The very end is
pretty similar to the anime. Except that Akio seems to have disappeared and Touga still remembers Utena. Anthy goes to look for her Utena, just like the anime version. But she seems to be more certain that she's alive. I always prefer endings with more closure though. That's why I wasn't crazy about the anime's.
I liked the Nanami character, though I think that outside of anime someone that stupid and mean wouldn't survive very long. Basically she's set up to be a character not worthy of any pity, but you kind of pity her for that.
But I didn't like the Nanami-centered episodes. They did break up the narrative and they were just so surreal that they broke my suspension of disbelief. I mean come on, she turns into a cow?! Who wrote that one?
As to the ending:
it never seemed to me at all possible that Utena died in the last episode, because she got the door of revolution open which seemed to signify her winning the battle. I thought that by haveing everyone at the Academy forget about her, it showed that Utena had left the world we knew and entered some higher plane of existence. That was the catch to the Revolution: she could change the world, but only the most worthy could go there. An interesting variation on this theory was given to me by Sailor Europa: Utena entered not only a better world, she entered the real world, our world, and is living among us. I don't know that that fits with the anime, but the idea is pleasing to me.
Probably Kunihiko Ikuhara himself. Genius though he may be, the man has a fucked up imagination. Just think about the movie. The man comes up with strange ideas, puts them in his shows, passes them off as symbolism, and the fans go crazy.Sailorasteroid wrote: Who wrote that one?
