Return to Labyrinth

Post by SeiUsa » Thu Mar 15, 2007 1:39 pm

Has anyone read this yet? In case you don't know, it's a three part manga sequel to the Jim Henson movie "Labyrinth." I heard mixed reviews about it, but I'm hoping to check it out anyway.

I've skimmed the first book, but I didn't get a chance to really READ it.. The art is very nice, in my opinion, and Derek got a chance to read it (the book belongs to his sister) and he didn't like it. But..he's pretty hard to please when it comes to books and movies and such ^^;

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Yes, Derek's sister bought hers at a Barnes and Noble. It's in with the regular manga.

I saw it on Amazon and read some reviews here and there. Most people are pretty disappointed in it. From what I've heard, Jareth is in love with Toby (who's pretty much a male Mary-Sue) or something (as opposed to, oh, I don't know....SARAH!) and Sarah's character is changed dramatically to some school teacher who's cold and doesn't believe in dreams or something. Again, that's just information I've read from various places, but it doesn't exactly make me want to go and buy it.

It's not so much he's in love with him...he just has a strange sort of obsession with him. At least, that's what I gathered from it.

But yes, Toby is very much a gary stu.

And this completely contradicts the end of the movie. When I saw the cover art I thought of buying it just to look at the pretty pictures (I'm not suffering through 100 pages of a Gary Stu character)... until I saw that the cover artist wasn't who drew the manga. This is what annoys me the most as I find this as nothing short of false advertisement. From what I read about the manga, the cover art is the only redeeming thing about it.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

It's been a few months since I actually read this manga. I don't want to say it's bad, because some of the story actually had some interesting points to it and I'm kind of wanting to check out the next volume just to see if it develops well. On the other hand, so much of the characters seem to have changed since the movie that it really just doesn't sit as well with me. It's like that familiar feeling from the film just isn't quite there. But I'm not going to pass complete judgement until I've read further into it.
