Non-traditional anime?

Post by SeiUsa » Mon Nov 13, 2006 11:35 pm

Hey, is there any kind of anime out there that doesn't follow the traditional style (such as large eyes, small mouth, sweatdrops. etc). I've never seen any that were created a bit more realistic than the usual anime, and I'm just curious.
The Facts of the Animal Kingdom:
"Zebras can bite."
"Snakes say sss."
"Lions chase people."
And of course…”Tigers bite you.”
--From Tiffu’s Pre-K students. =D
And one from me...Leopards are gorgeous.

There are a lot of realistic style anime, but I can't remember a lot off the top of my head. The only one I can really remember at this time Is Samurai X, the OVA of Ruroni Kenshin. I know I've seen more, but I can't remember them right now.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

Just about anything from Satoshi Kon comes to mind.
You seem like the kind of person who'll lie.
However... this sword doesn't lie.

Bio Hunter. But that movie is incredibly violent, so you might not like it.

Perfect Blue. It's a movie, and it's a thriller. It's a real mindfuck, but it's a fantastic movie. I'd recommend it to any anime fan. It doesn't follow any sort of pattern/genre i've ever seen before.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Spring and Chaos is an anime movie that isnt traditional in art style.

Its all cat people but not the typical catgirls and catboys they actually look like bipedial cats.

I havent seen it yet but I hear its a real mindfuck

The more serious the anime the better chances of it looking more realistic.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

Cowboy Bebop and other series by Watanabe look a bit more "realistic". And I second the recommendation for Perfect Blue above - it's DEFINITELY a mindfuck of a movie, but it was also really, really good.

well, in the non traditional sense that it is set in Japan and stuff:

A Victorian Romance Emma.

cos its set in Victorian London.

as far as the animation goes, its pretty much anime-like, but its not 100% looking anime.

The main character's played by Samuel L. Jackson so you get the idea. ^^

A lot of the more serious anime tend to be a bit more "realistic". Ditto with many of the sci-fi anime. My fiance is getting me into Tekkaman Blade, and that's a bit more realistic than most. It's a decent anime, despite its age.

Ditto on most of the rest already mentioned that I'm familiar with.
