Magic Knight Rayearth

Post by Sakuya » Mon Nov 17, 2003 3:14 pm

Does anyone have Tokyopop's reprinted version of Magic Knight Rayearth. I was wondering, do they keep the Japanese sound effects or substitute it for their English sound effects? :?

Also, is all 6 volumes continuous? I'm not really interested in the second part of the story so would I miss anything if I didn't get the second part?

I have the first four volumes of the originally release set, but I have seen the first volume of the newly released set. Some text was changed here and there, but this one was just...yeah... XP

OLD RELEASE
Clef: *checks Hikaru's skirt to see if it's good for armor*
Umi: WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU PERVERT!!
Clef: Oh! .... I'M NOT A PERVERT!!

NEW RELEASE
Clef: *checks Hikaru's skirt to see if it's good for armor*
Umi: WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU P--!

They cut it off just in time. -_-; Maybe they took younger kids into consideration? They shouldn't have had to, it was fine the way it was before...

The covers are prettier! :P I'm glad Tokyopop reprinted it. I might be getting it for Christmas and hope they have an After Christmas sale.

I have the two box sets of the reprinted Magic Knight Rayearth. I really liked it. If I remember correctly, they kept things more accurate, like not having three or more different spellings for Cephiro and other things. That and they gave references about things that we wouldn't be familiar with, instead of Americanizing every little detail.

That's why I love the newer manga and the reprints. it's nice to be able to read it without it being messed with too much. I highly recommend it if you can get them.

I saw both boxes on the shelf of the Waldenbooks in my mall, looked very tempting to buy. I loved the anime series, it's right at the top of my list along with Sailor Moon. Seeing these good comments coming about from TP's reprinting, it looks as I may have to pick these up when I get a chance.

The skirt part is in vol 1 when Clef is giving the girls their armor. I have the flipped version of Magic Knight Rayearth, and really the only things I didn't like about it was how Ferio had that fake southern accent, Caldina had a valleygirl accent. Also, one of the princesses from one of the other countries in the second story arc spoke in third person all the time. I found that to be pretty annoying. I might buy the unflipped version, but not at the moment. There's too many other series I'm more interested in reading. I did buy the unflipped boxset for the first story arc of the manga for a friend as a present for her graduation party I was invited to. Heh, she was really happy to own that boxset. ^^

That's interesting, since in the anime dub Caldina has a Southern accent. Umi even talks about Caldina's "accent" (which I found very interesting and amusing because most of the time, accents in anime dubs usually aren't commented upon by the characters ON the show, so far as I've seen).

I've only read volume 1 of the manga :? But yeah the covers are so beauuutiful *_*

I saw the OVAs, and most of the tv series, except for the last 8 episodes. I should watch those over my winter break and get more of the manga...

I wanna see the MKR OVAs. I've only seen the first season of the anime and thought it was pretty dissappointing to me, but I'm really curious to see the OVAs. I'm just waiting for them to re-release them on DVD, unless they already have...?

I'd like to see the anime, since it hasn't come on US TV yet...

Wait until you watch the second TV season then. I love both but I can see why some people might not like the first season, but you should definetly give the second a watch since it's much better and you might like it.

And yes, the OVAs have been released on DVD this past spring. I got the DVD the same day as the SM box, but haven't watched it yet. Hopefully I'll get to watch it real soon.

I'm not exactly sure what it is about the first season that got to me most...I really enjoyed it until about the second or third tape...then I just got annoyed for the following reasons:
1) The constant "oooh I can't do it, I don't believe in myself...OH LOOK! My friends are in trouble! *ENERGY BOOST* YAY I CAN DO IT NOW!" thing. That happens to each girl about 6 times in one tape alone -_-
2) The mecha. I couldn't take the mecha thrown in there with the shoujo girls. It wasj ust too much. It was like CLAMP wanted to take every genre of anime and throw it into one series.
3) The subbed tapes I got were subbed REALLY badly. They were commercial subs, but I have no idea what company...Not only were the translations ridiculously off in places, but they subbed "chan" as "ster". So if Hikari said "Hey, Fuu-chan!", it was subbed as "Fuuster." Anyone up for Foosball?

so yeah, my friend and I just gave up.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Wow, that was a retarded move. I didn't notice it the first time running through it because i probably was thinking the word pervert and THOUGHT I saw it. Wow, what a dumb move. Other than that, I really like it ^^

I've seen VHS rips from the subbed version you mentioned and I've seen DVD rips of Magic Knight Rayearth and the translations are the same aside from the ster. The DVD rips thankfully don't use "ster" or anything like that. I think those may have been early VHS rips of Magic Knight Rayearth because the VHS rips from Kazaa also have the same transaltion as the ones you mentioined, Tiff-sama, but also don't use the word "ster."

Yes, they were tapes 1 and 2, I believe. I think after that, they stopped using "ster". It annoyed the hell out of me.

I like MKR. I want to get the unflopped version, but I've only just bought the 6th FLOPPED version, and I don't want to spend all that money AGAIN. Which spelling do they pick for Caldina's name? Cuz in the flopped version, they're kinda all over the place. K's and R's and G's and "inia"s. That was the most annoying part for me.
I THINK I've seen the 2nd and 3rd "episode" of the OAV...or something. It wasn't the series, I know that. Me and my friends snagged them at Hastings along with the Wacked-Out Lain Tape(tm). I remember hating Windom's voice. He was like a superhero or something.
