Well you see, when you explain it like that, I can understand it muchn more than watching the actual anime. But with no previous knowledge of the references made, I was getting confused quickly. Very quickly. And there was one part of the ending I liked:
Shinji learning he can be happy. That, and the school scene before then, where Shinji and Asuka are childhood friends.
Earlier in the topic, there are a few posts regarding the references. Basically what they are and where they came from. Read through those, and see if it makes a little more sense then. I can understand why they would be confusing to someone who's never heard of them. In Evangelion, they're never really explained, they're just used to promote the theme of the show.
"I loved you. I was a pentapod monster, but I love you. I was despicable and brutal and turpid, mais je t'aimais, je t'aimais. And there were times when I knew how you felt, and it was hell to know it. My Lolita girl, brave Dolly Schuller."

One of the most useful things I ever heard was the audio commentary track on the DVD version of the movie. They had three people (one was involved with the script & did the voice of Asuka dubbed, I can't remember what the second guy did, and the third one wasn't directly involved with the movie, but had done a lot of research on the various symbols and such). Both Death & Rebirth and End of Eva feature the same people doing the commentary.
Anyway, they explain a lot about all of the religious symbols used, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I had seen Eva 1-26 + End of Eva, and just thought it was stupid and made no sense. I still don't particularly like it, but at least I have a (vague) idea of what happened.
I would agree that there are some pretty violent scenes ... I think Shinji's Eva going berserk was one of the more violent parts of the entire series. I don't remember a lot of it, since I didn't like it all that much & it was a long time ago (almost 4 years ago).
All this thinking about Eva is starting to give me a headache, so I think I'll stop for the night.

I never thought that scene was supposed to equate humans with God.
I thought it was just some kind of introspective look inside Shinji's mind as he saw other possibilities for how things could have turned out, and then he realizes that he can control his future. Once he does, everyone claps for him and he's able to go on with his life.
But, like I said, it's been a while since I've seen it, so maybe I'm not remembering it correctly.ParaKiss_Groupie wrote:For instance, the alternate reality. That was created by humankind. They are now equal to God.
I'm pretty sure that End of Eva is an alternate ending to the series, and not a continuation. Basically, there was supposedly so much outcry concerning the original episodes 25 and 26 that Anno created the movie as a different ending. It's supposed to take place immediately after the events in Episode 24.ParaKiss_Groupie wrote:Those last two episodes contained more plot points than the rest of the series. But it was so fast-paced that it became confusing, and so most people miss those points completely. They granted no closure because they weren't supposed to. That was the movie's (End of Evangelion) purpose.
All this thinking about Eva is starting to give me a headache, so I think I'll stop for the night.

Actually, i've also heard it pronounced "eh-vahn-gel-ion", with a "g" like in "good". That's how I pronounce it.Starscream wrote:Eh-vahn-jelion. Short e in the beginning.

Oh, right >< The word "Evangelion", when written in katakana, uses the symbol for "ge", the hard "g" sound. I was basing my pronounciation off of the Latin form, which uses the soft "g" ^^;;

whitewolf: Self-discovery maybe, and perhaps some action, but don't count on there being a lot of romance in this series. If you've only read the first manga...you're in for quite a ride ^^;;

Ah Evangelion.... I saw it awhile ago. I would've enjoyed it more if I liked more of the characters. The only ones I cared about were Misato and Asuka. Then to a lesser extent- Kaji and Kaoru. I either couldn't stand the others (both Rei and Shinji especially got on my nerves) or just didn't give a damn about them either way.
As for the story, yeah it was complexed and pretty intriguing. The series seemed to be at its peak at episodes 19 and 20 and went downhill. And I didn't enjoy the second half of End of Eva at all. I STILL haven't remembered to watched Death and Rebirth, although I've had access to it for about two years now. That's terrible

Even if they don't live up to your expectations, I have found them a good read so far, and by picking up the graphic novels, you save quite a bit, as opposed to picking up the individual comics.

Death_2004: There are hundreds of explinations for what happened at the end of those movies (both Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion). The bottom line, I believe, was that
Gendo succeeded in causing the "Human Complementarity Act", wherein all souls became one, and using Rei as the catalyst instead of Lilith. Shinji, however, fought back against it, and somehow he and Asuka both "survived" complementarity through the strength of Shinji's resolve.
As to the symbolism involved in the whole thing....I have no idea. I'd need to pour over those movies a few times, but by then, I'd imagine my mind would be turned to mush, and I would be in a mental institution.

I own the entire series (except DVD 5, which my friend lost -_-) and it was the first anime series that I'd seen/bought completely on DVD. I bought the second DVD first, which was a big mistake, because it threw me into the action without telling what the heck was going on. I eventually watched the first one, and the rest, and then the movies.
I saw the movies before the series ending. They say you have to watch the movies a few times to get what the heck happened in them...I don't think I can do that ^^;

I thought about this explanation before but i hate to say it still doesn't help. Death: I think questions like that require a better understanding of the series and characters, something, unfortunately, I don't have ^^;; I've only seen a select few episodes of the series, sad to say, so aside from what was mentioned in my posts above, I'm as clueless as you are ^^:

Hmmm. I'm currently in the middle of watching Eva through for the first time, so I figured I'd revive this thread.
In high school I saw a couple episodes, but didn't really like it so stopped watching it. But as a psychology major, this series is like candy to me right now ^^;; The characters *are* quite unlikable, and I think that's pretty unique for an anime, because they're more real to me... plenty of people are unlikable and unpopular in real life due to whatever reasons, be it personality or psychological issues and such. And with the psychological issues of these characters it is very interesting to see them all trying to deal with their pasts in their own way. It's neat.
The only thing that's bothering me so far with the series is how predictable all-hell-breaking loose is, seems like almost every episodes I know what's going to happen with whatever malfunctions.
And from reading most opinions in this thread... wtf is with the Shinji bashing? I don't see why everyone hates Shinji. I don't particularly love him or anything, but I don't mind him. And I definitely don't see him whining constantly, he barely says anything. o_O;; How are "all of his lines 'poor me'"? I wouldn't wanna pilot the Eva either... something always goes wrong, lol. I find Asuka more annoying/grating honestly, but she's still an interesting character, as are pretty much everyone in the series so far. Which is why I am liking it this time around.
So far, the only character I definitely don't like or care about at all is Kaji. Just a typical playboy. He can go jump off a bridge for all I care.
Although maybe he gets better later on, guess I'll find out, but right now I think he's an asshole.
And of course, Gendo is too, but he's at least interesting because he's so twisted and messed up and I get the feeling he's gonna be one of those characters you love to hate.

I couldn't get throuh the first DVD becuase Shinji annoyed me so much. I'm sorry, but most of his lines ARE "poor me". He just...ugh, he's so full of self-pity, and "my life is the worst, so everybody feel sorry for me." And he's a wimp, completely.Sylphiel wrote:

I'm reminded of the scene..I think it's in the EVA movie...
Asuka is literally getting killed in a battle, and she's screaming for Shinji to help her, and he's just..curled up in a ball of whiny mass, shivering and whimpering, and she ends up getting stabbed in the fuckin' head. I mean, seriously. Come on.
I think my main problem is there are two types of chars I can't stand: Useless chars, and whiny/self-pitying chars. Shinji falls under category two, which as a result, also puts him in category one.
