Dubs you think are good

Certainly one could prefer the dub of something. What one thought that the dubbed version fixed things that they thought were flaws in the original? (that would be a changed dub, of course)

And there are many Americans who probably favor the dubbed Sailor Moon to the original, even though many of the hard-core anime fans don't like what was done to it.

This is a misconception that i'm tired of having to hear (and this is not just directed you, this is directed to anime fans in general). You don't have to be a hard-core anime fan or a purist to prefer subs. I know people who have seen one episode of sailor moon dubbed, one subbed, and immeditely favor the sub. A lot of people simply have a preference.

I didn't say that. I said that there are people who prefer the dubs who have seen the original versions. I haven't met them personally, but I'm pretty sure there are people like that out there.

Sailor Sapphire's question was asking if it's possible to prefer the dubbed version of something, and I think it is possible, otherwise, why would things be dubbed in the first place if there weren't "dubbies" out there who like them?

I agree with you, Tiff, you don't have to be a purist to prefer the subs. I prefer them myself, for various reasons, none of which is "hating dub changes." I know from experience that one doesn't have to dislike dubs to rank them second-place.

I like the subs too...because there are just some things the dub cannot do justice for...but I also respect the dub too for its surprisingly good music, and lighthearted moments

Rainbow, for god's sake, I specifically said my statement wasn't directed at you. I was using your words, and I quote: "even though many of the hard-core anime fans don't like what was done to it." to spawn my point that some people believe you have to be labled a purist simply becuase you like subs, or that all hard-core anime fans don't like dubs. I know what Sapphire's question was. Not everything is an argument against you.

I know it wasn't directed at me. I was agreeing with you on the subject, Tiff, the thing I was correcting is that you misinterpreted what I wrote. I didn't mean that only hard-core anime purists prefer subtitled stuff, and I'm sorry if I put it in a way that seemed like an over-generalization. I was only trying to say that there are people who have seen both, yet prefer the dubs. You don't have to be ignorant of the original to prefer the dubs, right? (especially if one thinks that the things in the original are inappropriate and NEED to be censored...not that I think that, but some people do)

I'm sorry if I seemed too defensive, I actually didn't take it personally. I was just trying to clear things up.

Back on topic...
I haven't seen the original of it, but I'm guessing that the dub of "Voogie's Angel" (an obscure anime OAV based off of a radio play) is pretty accurate to the original. If anyone knows any information to the contrary, please tell me here.

Yes. It's all a matter of personal opinion. I tend to watch shows in English and Japanese, and for most cases, I don't really seem to have a real preference. There are some that I do prefer one way or the other however. With Hand Maid May, for instance, I much prefer the dub, but on the other hand, with Sailor Moon I prefer the original.

Anyway, getting to the topic, here are dubs that I think are among the best:

I think the Magic Knights Rayearth dub is pretty good, so far as I've seen. It seems to be accurately translated, except for the joke about Caldina's accent (but since I've never seen the original of that one...maybe she had a certain kind of Japanese accent in the original?). And the theme song in English is almost word-for-word in translation...it doesn't even mention the name of the show.(common for dubbed anime theme songs?)

Caldina speaks a different Japanese dialect in the Japanese version. I think it was the Kansai dialect.

Yeah I guess the MKR dub was ok, but I've seen better. Not to mention the singer for the dub songs sucked terribly.

I'm definitely in the minority here, but I prefer Cowboy Bebop dubbed to subbed. I've seen a large chunk of it subbed, but I saw it dubbed first and it wasn't hacked to bits in the process. I'm usually a sub person, but I make an exception for Bebop.

TRANSFORMERS!!!!

Although I hated Armada (I don't think it would have made a difference whether it was dubbed or subbed), the Transformer Series, especially the original from the 80s, had the greatest dub voice actors in my opinion, especially for characters like Starscream, Soundwave, and Megatron. I haven't seen the Japanese version however, but I don't think it was hacked to pieces when it was dubbed, especially considering the fact that it was probably the LEAST cheesiest cartoon from the 80s.

The original Robotech also had a good dub.

i must say that i'm surprised no one mentioned .hack/sign. i mean, all the original music was kept, the voices were very well-picked, the script was left nearly completely intact, and there was great acting too. i'm not too partial to dubs, but if i truly like one i will admit it. that's how good i think this dub is; i have very high dubbing standards. all the others have been mentioned, so no use repeating.

Nadesico has the best dub I've ever heard. FACT.

I love the sub & dub versions and I'll happily watch either. But, I saw the dub first, so I might actually prefer it. The acting and casting was spot on.

The only tiny thing is that Akito has the exact same voice as Shinji Ikari does in the English Eva dub (which was also pretty good, I thought). Not just the same actor, the exact same voice. I keep expecting the two of them to merge into one in some kind of freaky crossover. Heh.

The dub of Wolf's Rain shows promise, though one episode isn't enough to tell if it's going to be good or not.

I dare say the English version captured my interest in the show a lot better than the fansub I have...

I thought the Read or Die dub was done well. I watched both sub and dub over, and most of the dialouge was kept intact. And I thought the Joker's english accent was an improvement. Even though he didn't have one in the original, his character was english, you know? He just had that air, and the fact that he kept on drinking tea pointed towards it. XD

All these releases are from Manga Entertainment and I think all the dubs I've seen from them so far are pretty good ^_^

After watching three episodes of it dubbed now, I can say that the dub is definitely very good. Though since I've heard the people who dubbed Bebop dubbed this too, it's not that surprising...
