Not sure. It really depends on the types of anime that you like. I guess it's really boils down to personal preference. I happen to like some stuff better dubbed then I do subbed.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

I thought the Escaflowne dub* is pretty good.

*The movie dub, at least. I assume the uncut dub of the TV series is similarly good

Yep. [controversial statement]I enjoyed the DBZ: Broli movie more dubbed than I did subbed. I think the music in the Japanese version sucks. It has no emotion in it at all. But the music in the dubbed movie was very good. It really fit the battle scenes. So, it was more enjoyable dubbed to me. [/controversial statement]

I have no real problems with the movie dub. The uncut TV series dub has the same cast (most of whom are great - yes, I even like Dilandau's dub voice, oddly enough), but the writing and directing aren't very good, and as a result a lot of the lines come off as very stilted. Also, the fact that the production of it was rushed really shows... Once in a while a character says something that just doesn't make sense, like "Give me back my Escaflowne, and give me back my Guymelef!" Also the audio mixing is quite bad - the music is much quieter than it should be. What else... oh yes! The Dragonslayers seem to have different voices every single time they appear. Sometimes female voices, sometimes male voices.

And yet, I still enjoy it a lot. It's probably because my first experience with Escaflowne was watching the edited dub on Fox Kids (all of it - in the UK they showed all 23 episodes)... I'm used to the dub cast, and I think they really suit the characters well.

Would it be theoretically possible to have a dub that is better than the sub?
A friend of mine says the Trigun dub is better than the original, but I'm a submonkey (fan of subs), so I wouldn't know. I also don't own the series (she does). I, too, prefer subs (hence: submonkey), but usually only after I've seen the dub and the dub is what hooked me. I recently watched the Cowboy Bebop movie dubbed with the "Japanese" subtitles (that is...somehow, we managed to get the subtitles of the "original" version to play during the DUB). Sometimes the lines were way off. It was pretty funny. The voices were really different, tho, cuz we watched the first few minutes of the original before deciding we wanted to understand what they were saying and not so much read. Anyway, everything you've mentioned I agree with. Yu Yu Hakusho, I don't so much like the VAs, but the dialogue itself is good.

The Trigun dub is decent, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's better. They give everyone Texas accents because it's set in a western setting -_- that annoys me a bit, but I suppose I understand why they did it.

Having bought the first volume of Chobits more or less to watch it dubbed, I have to say the dub is just as good as I'd heard. Chii and Sumomo sound very close to the way they do in Japanese (Chii especially), and everyone's voices fit their characters well.

The dub of Maison Ikkoku is also very good.

While the Japanese version of Sailor Moon is my favorite version, I thought the Sailor Moon dub was well done. I mean, sure it changes a lot from the original Japanese version, and cuts out a lot of scenes, but if you view them as separate shows, the DiC dub is very good. SOme of their voice actors are wonderful. The DiC music is also nice. While it is a change from the Japanese version's music and the dialouge changes a lot, DiC did put a lot of work into a lot of their dubbed episodes. In 1995 they did. Most of the episodes are consistent, and the fact that they bring up things from the first season in conversation, like Urawa Ryo was brought up in the R season, which showed great continuity. A lot fo the voice actors were very passioante in their roles and you could tell they really loved their job. While the played some scenes backwards, changed a lot of the dialouge and cut scenes, they did put a lot of work into it.
Usagi and Mamoru are my favorite couple ever. Usagi and Mamoru forever!

I have recently seen the dubbed version of Last Exile, and it seems pretty good. They stick pretty close to the subbed script, and the voices aren't half bad. I've seen a few snippets of the dubbed Fruits Basket as well. The voices seem pretty good. I think they have the guy who does the voice of dubbed Legato Bluesummers (from Trigun) do the voice of Akito, which is kinda appropriate.
Escaflowne (don'thurtme I know it has big problems, but I love it anyway)
I'm a little conflicted about the Escaflowne dub. On the one hand, they butchered it horribly, and it shows. I remember one scene when Van's country was being destroyed and his master was saying something to Van as he was dying. They actually blacked out half the screen in order to hide the blood. However, even that couldn't kill the series for me, I still wanted to see the rest of it. I guess its just a testament to how good the original series was.

I respect the dub SM mainly for its music, but the Cloverway dubbers did a better job of keeping the original's jokes to an extent.

Take the episode where Serena and Reni switch ages, for example:

What Mamoru says in the English version when he discovers the ol' switcheroo: "Great, where's the hidden camera?
What Mamoru says in the original: "Great, am I on Candid Camera?" (or something to that extent)

So while Cloverway did a better job of preserving the original music and etc. they did the best job at keeping the original jokes.

One great dub was the Chobits dub. The voices were very accurate and fitting, and they kept most of the lines very intact.

(Japanese version:
Chii: Pervert...Hideki is a pervert!
Hideki: Don't say that Chii!
Chii: Hideki is a pervert!

English version:
Chii: Pervert...Hideki is a pervert!
Hideki: Chii don't go saying that!
Chii: Hideki is a pervert!)

And generally really good. The one single thing that bothered me was extremely small and almost pointless mentioning, but they changed Yumi saying "I'm an E cup" to "I'm a D cup" and the reason I didn't like that was because I didn't see the point in that, but like I said, very minor.

Me: This is coming from the kid who doesn't know what Viagra is!
Ko: It's cold medicine, right?
Our Group: NO!!!
Me: Can I just say?
Dylan: Sure, it's no weirder than what normally comes out of your mouth.
Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Carley: STEVE! STEVE GET OVER HERE AND TELL KO WHAT VIAGRA DOES!
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

Fruits Basket is pretty well done, but I still enjoy the sub much more... mostly because Kotono Mitsuishi. Spitirited Away is a wonderful dub as well (except now that I learned that the girl who plays Chihiro also plays the scary girl from the American remake of the Ring, so I have issues listening to the English version now for some reason).

I was talking about the uncut dub rather than the edited dub. That said, the edited dub is still an excellent series... just not as good as the original (or the uncut dub).
