Stupid things dub companies did to anime.

Post by Chibi chibi star » Sat Nov 08, 2003 9:14 am

Besides Sailor Moon, other animes have been turned into a joke by evil American dub companies. We're gonna make a BIG list about the stupid things they've done to them. I'll start:

1. Card Captor Sakura- Changing the name to Cardcaptors to make it look like it was an anime for boys
2. Card Captor Sakura- Changing Sakura's name to sah-KOO-ra :| No comment.
3. Card Captor Sakura- Making Sakura and Tomyo sound like brats :x
4. Card Captor Sakura- Erasing every bit of Japanese culture (writing, food, other Asian countries. Seriously.) from the show.
5. Card Captor Sakura (again  )- Changing Touya and Yukito's relationship (lesbian thing, they didn't make them related, they were "best friends". ...okay.)

You guys' turn!
I wish on a star...
Just to be with you...
Please find me...
Call my name for me...
I'll be there for you...
My only love...

5. Card Captor Sakura (again )- Changing Touya and Yukito's relationship (lesbian thing, they didn't make them related, they were "best friends". ...okay.)

Sakura's name wasn't changed, it was just pronounced very, very badly. All of the others names, however, were changed. (Tomoyo - Madison, Yukito - Julian, etc)

Um..Yukito and Touya are both guys, so how could they be lesbians?...and they AREN'T related in either version...they are best friends in the original and in the dub, but are in love, too in the original. o_O; what are you talking about?

Now as for my list:

1. Slayers Next - casting David Moo for Xelloss. My god, why.

and that's all I can think of, and I'm late for work, so I'll add on later XD

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

What I think she meant, Tiff, is that she was surprised that they didn't make Touya and Yukito related, and just made them best friends, unlike the lesbian relationship between Haruka and Michiru in Sailor Moon, where they made them cousins. Yugioh has a pretty awful English dub, too. Skipping and combining so many episodes, and trying to make a show that's aimed at teens towards children. Shaman King has a pretty bad, too, though not quite as bad as others, IMO. The way the English dub is, it makes it seem like it's a Pokemon rip-off (which it isn't). For uncut dubs, I'll have to say the worst of them is Fushigi Yugi, for Chichiri's really bad English voice.

I generally don't watch ANY dubs, because I usually hate all of them. Even if other people say they're good, it just seems off to me. I think the only dubs I've seen recently are Cardcaptors (possibly the worst dub ever) and Dragonball Z. Speed Racer was really bad too, since you couldn't understand anything they said with the talking so fast. I hated the KareKano dub only because of the voices of the two main characters. I think the only dub I remember liking was the Utena movie, but I haven't seen that since two years ago, so I don't really remember.
I am a loser!

And pretty much for the same reasons you've said about CC and SM. Name changes, story changes (even in the sub track), changes the the video... the works.

Its stupid when they change the music..especially if they started out using all the original music! POKéMON's hurting from 4Kids music. It is good music..but not as good as the original bgm.

I'm just going to say everything in yu-gi-oh (though there are some changes I don't mind at all), and save Yoshmaster the trouble of coming and ranting about it...

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie (which is anime) got EXTREMELY poor and wooden voice acting. I couldn't stand to watch much through it, since I kept wanting to say the lines myself with the correct amount of emoting.

Some dubbs I really, really like and some I don't. It depends on the anime and the voice actor.

I really don't see American labels as being horrid. I'm actually glad that they expose different variaties of animes to all types of audiances, other then Cartoon Network mainstreams. Not all animes are changed/adapted for younger viewers. Alot of them remain the same. It is a tragedy when very good animes are hacked to pieces to please younger audiances, but their are also alot of good ones.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

*Nods* Yes...if a dub is done right (translation-wise, voices, music, etc), then it can be a great way to expose people to anime. There are several dubs that I find have been done very well...and then there are the dubs on this list that have just been anihilliated. It's too bad that they can't all be done as well as, say, Trigun.

My initial reaction to this topic was "Touching them at all!", but there are some dubs I like. The vast majority however, I despise. I haven't even listened to the English dubs of most of my DVDs (And I have yet to watch any of the dubs I own through more than 30 minutes).

My biggest peeve with dubs is that they usually find the worst VAs possible. I have found this to be the case with most shoujo anime. For some reason, all the female VAs are either total ditzes or *cough*Terri Hawkes*cough* experimenting with drugs.

In Love Hina, they gave Kitsune a southern accent in the dub. And they gave Kaolla some funky accent as well (don't know what to call it).
And in Digimon Frontier, Ranamon was given an even worse southern accent. She was the only good female character in that series. Also from this show they overused Izumi's Italian phrases. WAY overused.
Those are my biggest peeves. I could list a ton more, but I'll leave some for others to speak of. :)

Anubi: I just saw Mog/Terra hentai.
Kari: XDDDDDDDDDDDD
Anubi: My life is snow scarred.
Kari: ooooo, snow
Anubi: Oo, fun.
Anubi: SNOW SCARRED.
Anubi: WHOO.

Actually, in a way that is accurate (she does have an accent in the original as well).

As for Kaolla, I think her dub voice is better. She should have a foreign accent since she's from a different country (MolMol, an island in the Pacific Ocean, in the manga. They never say where she is from in the anime).
And in Digimon Frontier, Ranamon was given an even worse southern accent. She was the only good female character in that series.
Which season is Frontier again?

I completely agree...some of the VAs are just AWFUL. Lisa Ortiz, Terri Hawkes, and David Moo to name a few. I don't know a whole lot of names, but the girl who did Tira's voice in Sorcerer Hunters...my god, was she smoking 10 packs a day? It's like they just cast some random person off of the street. That's what gets me most about dubs. It makes it unenjoyable to watch for me.

*nods* he's right...there are different dialects in japan due to where they live...for example, those from Osaka have a different-sounding voice...like Kero-chan's voice actor in CCS. So, to give those characters accents is accurate....I don't always like the accents they choose,b ut at least they've researched the fact that they have accents to begin with.

Personally, I didn't think Terri Hawkes' voice for Serena was *too* terribly bad. I mean, it sounded much too old for Serena and didn't really suit her, and Kotono Mitsuishi, Kae Araki and Tracey Moore were all much better, but at least it was easier on the ears than Linda Ballyntyne's voice for Serena, IMO.

Terri Hawkes' problem wasn't that she was a bad actress. Her problem was that she tried way too hard to sound...stupid. Take the wailing. Usagi NEVER sounds that ridiculous when she cries. That "AHAahaAAAHAahaahaAAAHH!" noise Terri did was just horrid to the ears. It's almost as if she went out of her way to make Usagi stupider than she already was. That's what bothers me. Sometimes, when she relaxed and got into the role a bit more, she sounded pleasing. Like, for example...the episode after Serena becomes the princess, and Darien gets kidnapped....Sailor Moon says this entire speech to Venus abuot how she doesn't want to fight anymore. she does a good job, there.

Ok, this really creeped me out and made me get goosebumps:

Ayashi no Ceres - they used a really really gruff and old lady's voice for Gladis Smithson who looks and sounds sexy in the original. It just doesn't match.

Sailor Moon S Movie - same issue as above with Luna *shudders*
