Something I've noticed in shipping...

Post by SeiUsa » Thu Oct 27, 2005 11:26 am

I don't know if it's just me who's noticed this, but when it comes to any type of shipping, the shippers tend to think it's all right for another guy to flirt with the girl of their ship, but it's never OK for another girl to flirt with the guy of the ship.
Take Pokemon, the most famous shipping is Ash/Misty. Well, when a guy named Rudy was wooing Misty like crazy (and pretty much asked her to MARRY him), the A/M shippers think it's "cute" when Ash gets all jealous about it. But when a girl named Melody kissed Ash on the cheek, the shippers were all, "OMG that bitch kist Ash I'm gonna kick her ass, fool!"
Or Inuyahsa. Kikyo is automatically branded as "evil" for "interfering" with Inuyahsa and Kagome, but any guy who flirts with Kagome is just plain "cute" or makes the romance "stronger".

Has anyone else noticed that shippers think another girl is evil but another guy is just cute, or is it just me? Cuz really, I've never seen any shippers bash another guy for interfering with the relationship. Just the girls.

Heh... yep... everyone hates Sylph from Slayers for "interfering" with Gourry/Lina. OMGEVILBIATCHKEELHEEEEER. Yet I don't think anyone would care if Lina had admirers (hell, doesn't Xellos kinda hit on her? Everybody loves him. I can't remember Try at all though).

In Fushigi Yuugi, a lot of people hate Yui being the third wheel for interfering with Miaka/Tamahome... yet everyone loves Hotohori who's also a third wheel interfering with M/T.

I definitely see your point. As for me, I always love the female third wheels. ^_^

O/T: The title of this topic and the first sentence of the introductory post actually made me think you were talking about "shipping", as in "the act of taking or transporting something by boat." oO

What's even worse is that I knew what the other definition of "shipping" was to begin with ><

OT: I'ver heard of 'shippers', but I'm still not used to it. The term 'shipping' is new to me, too. I'm just used to "pairing" and "supporters". It took some reading for me to understand what she meant. O_o I was preparing myself to move this topic.

I try to use an apostrophe whenever possible to make it clear.

One of the things I like about anime romance is that often times the girl is as clueless (or more so) than the boy, wheras in American romances, it's more likely to be a perfect girl with some Ben Stiller-type loser. I think this stereotype helps cause that kind of 'shipping problem. That is, the assumption that a Misty will be sensible enough to reject an interloper while an Ash is prey for any winsome wench who comes his way. Boys being boys, so to speak.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

It's not just shipping, it's everything else too! Worse is that it's OTHER GIRLS who hate on the female characters! I find something horribly wrong with that; why don't I see guys doing the same thing with male characters?

I think people like that who hate members of their own sex like that should be sho---I mean, do not deserve any kind of happiness. But I'm saving that rant for another day. ^_^

Yes, it is very irritating. :P

And yay for using a Pokemon pairing for the example. -giggles-
I never really knew why so many people hated Melody actually, I always thought she was cute and... her personality sure was interesting. A little Rei-ish in a way. ^^;;

Heh heh, sorry I made you think I was talking about..."transporting things by boat." :P

But yes, the (relation)shippers can be really weird. Like on Pokemon yet again, poor May was being bashed before she even made an appearance and had a chance. Seriously, if they're clingy flirtbugs then yeah, I can undertstand the annoyance. But if they're harmless or only make one flirty move, why all the hate?

Oh yeah, get this: On Inuyahsa some shippers were actually hating on Jakotsu for constantly flirting with Inuyasha. But then they found out about his true identity and they shrugged it off like, "Oh, he's harmless." :shock: So our little Inu has no chance at all of turning gay?

I've got another example. For the Teen Titans cartoon, Terra was given a lot of hate BEFORE she sold the Titans out to Slade thanks to the Beast BoyXRaven shippers. To make matters even more ridiculous, the creators have stated several times that said ship would never happen and what anyone saw was all they read in to it (though those statements were made quite subtley, so you wouldn't get it right off the bat XP).

However, many episodes before ("Deep Six"), Aqualad came on to the scene and Raven and Starfire blushed like crazy around him. No one shipping either of the girls with anyone complained about THAT. *rolls eyes*

-revives an old topic-

Oh, really, poor Haruka. ^^;
At least that's quieted down with the arrival of Shuu/Drew and his roses... xD;

>>>It's not just shipping, it's everything else too! Worse is that it's OTHER GIRLS who hate on the female characters! I find something horribly wrong with that; why don't I see guys doing the same thing with male characters?

Many shippers are female. Many female shippers are also fangirls. That should sum it up, methinks.

There are fanboys, but they're fewer, especially in the Pokemon fandom, although I've heard in fandoms of say, harem series, the fanboys of female characters will attack and bash the male character(s) the same way.

But in a fandom like Pokemon...
It's always, always, ALWAYS somehow the girl's fault.
That and Pokemon tends to have very... fiery females? xD; Fangirls hate those.
Haruka was a change because she doesn't fight or yell nearly as much.
Though when she did...

'ASH FIGHTED WITH MAY OMG HE FORGOT MISTY!!!! T-T MAY SUCKS!'
(I actually read something like that. I kid you not. xD; )
Er, you said /he/ was fighting with /her/, then how did-

Eh, forget it. xD;

>>>Lucario learns a move called "Tonbogaeri". This is a move in Judo feauturing a kick to the groin. Yes, they''ve actually made "Kick Him in the Nuts" an attack. It should SO do 150% more damage to male Pokemon. XD

Reviving old topic too...:-P

I think I have a theory about this. It's probably how the fangirls are like with boys in real life. One fangirl likes a boy, and she's insanely jealous over any girl he hangs out with, and hates her like crazy, yet fangirl enjoys the attention from other boys. So when she likes a certain ship (say Ash/Misty), she puts herself in the girl's (Misty) position and applies her own real-life...thing...with crushes to Misty's. Does that make sense?
If it does, it might seem a little far-fecthed...but why else would fangirls get so jumpy over fictional characters?

On another note...I'm pretty sure if Miroku wasn't in Inuyasha's group, Sango would be flamed to hell.

You make a good point and I think that you are quite right with that. Though I don't think that is the all encompassing reason as most of the time there is rarely any male charectors that are actually a threat to the ship. Girls tend to be more commiteted to a particular person. So to a girl shipper, another girl is a threat wheras a guy won't get more than a passing glace from the girl in the pairing.
I agree, Sango would be bashed to death if Miroku wasn't there. But Kagome is bashed to death anyway, and personally I like Sango more.
Though I do like her paired with Inuyasha. Not that I am a Kagome/Inuyasha shipper or any shipper of any pairing in that show (most of the time I prefer yaoi pairing anyway). That just happens to be a decent pairing in the series (I do think Miroku/Sango is cuter though ^_^)

To get so worked up over the love lives of fictionial characters......goodness me. :roll: some fangirls are scary when they bash characters.

Somtimes Shippers plain confuse me. There are some male charaters who show abosolutely no care for relasonships in general (or people) and the moment he shows some sort of care for a female (or male) they are destined to be together.

Do simple friendshiped between a guy and a girl even exist in anime? Or is everyone abosolutely inlove with eachother?

No.

When they are on screen together, every little thing is a sign that they love each other. And when they're both gone at the same time, they're obviously off snogging somewhere. :D

Oh, so THAT explains the friendship between me and Joe a couple years ago, back before we were even in love =D It all makes sense now!

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Reading this thread brings to mind a thread I once read on a South of Nowhere forum.

The thread was a blow-by-blow account of Season 3 episode 1.

Now for some background for those who don't watch the show: High-School girl Spencer Carlin has moved with her family to LA, where she's met and formed a fast friendship with fellow teen Ashley Davies, who, after one relationship that almost ended in a baby, has decided that she prefers girls. Over the season, it becomes fairly evident that Spencer is herself gay, and by the end of the season, she starts up a proper relationship with Ashley.

However, it quickly becomes evident that Ashley is bisexual, not lesbian--several second and third-season episodes show her in a relationship with her ex, Aiden Dennison. And there's the fact that the network asked for less focus on the lesbianism. Season 2 ends with a shooting that kills Spencer's brother Clay and has Aiden get shot through the heart.

Now, obviously, a large amount of the show's fanbase are gay--this is, after all, the first teen drama to have a lesbian appear first in the credits. And therefore, the number one relationship is the Spencer and Ashley. But then the first episode of Season 3 has Spencer and Ashley ("Spashley") having a really long (and long-awaited) kiss. And then they break up soon after (this was, btw, not unknown to the fans, as promos showed Spencer kissing another girl, Carmen aka "Bangs"). Nevertheless, the thread was filled with comments about things like "Oh, no, not Ashden [Ashley/Aiden], you're ruining my imaginary viewing!"

It was easier to just watch the episode in question.
"That new girl? She seems kinda weird to me. And what kind of name is Buffy anyway?"
"Hey, Aphrodisia!"
--unaired Buffy pilot

If you're reading this, then you've lost the game.
