Anime You'd Like To See On Adult Swim

Post by Cardcaptor Takato » Wed Oct 12, 2005 11:02 am

Admittedly, I don't really watch a lot of Adult Swim myself, but I think it's a great idea to help increase anime's popularity in the U.S. and I'm all for supporting it. There are several anime series that I think would work really well on Adult Swim and could help raise the popularity of the block and the anime titles they air. Some series I think should be on Adult Swim are:

Hunter x Hunter-I know this series hasn't been licensed yet and I still haven't seen a lot of it, but I've heard it gets a lot darker later on, even though it's fairly happy-go-lucky now. It may be a fighting anime, but it focuses a lot on character development and all the characters are fairly interesting and very likeable. The animation isn't the greatest in the world, but it still looks nice and the character designs look great. There's plenty of action in this series and the challanges Gon and .co face are always exiciting. I think this would be the perfect anime for Adult Swim to air and it could even go into competition against Naruto, though it probably wouldn't be nearly as popular. It's just a title that I think a lot of mainstream America would like, especially after the popularity of series like DBZ or Yu Yu Hakusho. Plus, I believe Hunter x Hunter is from the creator of Yu Yu Hakusho, so Cartoon Network could use that fact to help advertise the series and get more people interested in it.

X/1999(the TV series): It seems like all the anime that's aired on Adult Swim is very guy-geared. Not to say that girls don't watch Adult Swim, but it's like all the anime that's aired on the block are shounen or mecha series. With anime like Tokyo Mew Mew and Doremi airing on Saturday mornings, I think shoujo anime is starting to become more popular among the general public. X would be a good series for Cartoon Network to air to gain more girl fans for Adult Swim because even though it is a shoujo anime, it's more darker than most out there, and although it still has plenty of romance, I think it has enough action in it to interest the guys without making them feel embarrassed to like it, too. It could also increase the popularity of Clamp in the U.S. and if X does well on Adult Swim, maybe other Clamp series like Rayearth or Chobits could air on Adult Swim too, though that may be a little unlikely.

Azumanga Daioh-I know this doesn't really fit into the usual action-oriented anime that Adult Swim airs, but they also air a lot of episodic American comedy cartoons, too. Azumanga Daioh is sort of similar in that it's comedy and episodic. This show already has a lot of fans in the U.S., so it could possibly gain more on Adult Swim. They might be taking a gamble with this series though, since it's an anime that relies a lot on jokes you could only understand if you know something about Japanese culture, but if the series does well on a network like Cartoon Network, it might make dubbing companies like 4Kids realize that there's more interest in Japanese culture among the general public than they think, and maybe it could influence other dubbing companies to stop cutting out Japanese culture in their edited dubs. Of course, that's probably just wishful thinking there, but you never know.

That's all I can really think of right now, but if I can think of more, I'll add them later. What sort of anime series or movies do you think could find great success on Adult Swim?

That would be nice to see the uncut sailor moon series on there. But I highly doubt it. when I'm on the forums there most people think that Sailor moon is the worst. And think the show is a disgrace to anima. Curse them! but oh well i still love the show. No matter what they say.

Even uncut, I don't really think that Sailor Moon has the right feeling about it to be on Adult Swim. It is all pretty cutesy most of the time. Sure, we all like Sailor Moon, but it just doesn't belong on AS.

I personally thought it would have been better if they kept up with uncut Yuu Yuu Hakusho episodes, instead of transferring it over to Toonami in cut form. It really is no less adult oriented than Inuyasha, and there is plenty of action. It already has a big fan base in the states, so I think it would be successful on Adult Swim if they were to pick it up again in uncut form.

Mai-HiME

We'll have to wait and see if Mai-Otome and Rozen Maiden: Traumend should make the list too.

Utena
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

I wonder why Hunter X Hunter hasn't been licensed yet. I mean the manga seems to be selling well (they barely had it in a day in Forbidden Planet, before it started selling out) so why not the anime?

Other than that I can't really comment, not having Adult Swim and so not knowing what the do have and all.

Grave of Fireflies, as I have been dying to see that movie now for a long time, and I'm too cheap to go rent it from Blockbuster.

Bastard! would be another good one; I'm also interested in checking this series out, as I've heard a few good things about it from various individuals, and what I have heard sounds like it would fit in quite well with the show's demographic.

I guess I would like to see the Devilman OVAs or New Cutey Honey on Adult Swim. But that'll never happen.

Although I still think Mazinkaiser has a chance! :D

Another idea I'd like to see done with Adult Swim is have a Toonami Retro night or something. Like, once a week they could air a marathon of one of their older Toonami shows like Tenchi Muyo, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star etc. but air their uncut dubs instead. I think this would be a good idea because lots of anime fans complain about how they miss the good old days of Toonami back when they used to air their [insert random favorite show here]. By airing their uncut dubs on Adult Swim, it'll still allow Cartoon Network the chance to air something new, since they'll be airing an older show with some "never before seen footage", and at the same time they can please the older fans who miss their favorite shows. They wouldn't have to air the old shows all the time, either. Just like once a week in a mini-marathon type of thing would be good enough, since Cartoon Network might not like wanting to air so much of their older shows since they probably would think they wouldn't be profitable enough to air them all the time as they're more interested in airing anime that's new. And I think that any of the kiddies who watched these shows when they premiered on Toonami should be old enough by now to watch at least half of them in their uncut formats, too.

naruto. i know that it is already airing tvpg on cartoon network, but for whatever dumbass reason, they decided to cut out all of the blood and pretty much any actual use of the words "death", "kill", "die", etc.
i would also like to see jungle wa itsumo hale nochi guu on adult swim. i know it was licensed a long time ago, but i don't even know if it has been dubbed yet. i haven't heard anything. chances are it will either go straight to video, or air on adult swim (there's no way it would air on cartoon network).
it would also be nice if they would show the uncut yugioh dub on cartoon network, so that people that refuse to watch it in japanese can at least get a feeling for what the show is actually like. i say cartoon network because even at its worse i don't really see the need to put yugioh on adult swim.

"Now and Then, Here and There"

Some of you have never heard of it, but it's just a great anime series even if it's just 13 episodes. ^_^; Drama/action...mostly drama. XD But there's plenty of action. =D

Thought of another: The Rose of Versailles. Yeah, I know it's old but it's still a great show. At the very least they should release it over here.

Because of when it's aired, FCC standards prevent CN from showing it with flowing blood and rather violent stabbings and piercing attacks (i.e., Naruto stabbing himself in the hand, or Zabuza getting impaled with the acupuncture needles). Further, they do say "die, kill, death", but only sometimes are synonyms and similar phrases interjected. Honestly, Naruto's not mature nor violent enough to be on AS (the cartoon was toned down immensely from the manga version).

i know that they didn't completly remove those words from the dub, it's just that they replace them more often. i've been watching the anime well before it was dubbed, i don't see how it wouldn't be appropriate for adult swim. there is a lot of blood. i also think use of just a bit of profanity would improve the show a bit. not too much of it, but at least what the english manga had us accustomed to.
