TV Asahi Top 100 Anime Rankings

It amuses me that "Candy Candy" is pretty high on the list...I used to watch that when we lived in Japan, when I was like...three. I still have old copies of it on tape, completely raw.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

The list seems a little shaded toward shonen despite having Sailor Moon at 18--where's Utena? Where's Saint Tail? Where's Fushigi Yuugi? Where's Kimagure Orange Road? Where's Love Hina?

It also leans toward modern anime--One Piece is fourth? Good anime, no way it's the fourth best ever. I am glad to see that Doraemon made it so high after all these years--that's one that needs to be imported.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

After reading that list I said the same thing. O Utena, where art thou? And it is pretty shonen heavy. But The Rose of Versailles made it! I love that show and it really needs to come over here. It's been released on DVD in Japan. I was downloading but I'm at college so bittorrent is blocked and I'm stuck at episode 13.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

Why is Tom and Jerry on that list?
The Facts of the Animal Kingdom:

"Lions chase people."
And of course…”Tigers bite you.”

HELL YES! Cutie Honey made it to 53 place! :D

Alot of good shows made it...

Devilman, Mazinger Z, Rose of Versailles, Sailor Moon, One Piece.

Naruto shouldn't be on that list. -_-

No surprise there, it's pretty popular. I wish someone would license it over here. It looks pretty cool.

I'm not suprised at some of the ones. BSSM is obvious it'd be on, I can't say too much about it, but I'm not suprised about MS Gundam 0079 either. It's something to be called 'The Star Trek of Japan'

Tom and jerry did suprise me, but the classic ones- *the 1940's through 1960's were hystarical, the newer ones are horrid* are really good, and I can see them over and over again without tiring. Looney toons are also good, IMO. those are the classic USA cartoons, IMO.

I can't say much, though. I haven't read much.

The way I view the list, methinks that it's for Made-for-TV anime.

I would also add Macross (the first series) to the list, as well as Escaflowne.
"After all these years, you know it's not about control. It's about trying to do everything I can. And for you, it's about setting an example. Everyone looks up to you. They listen to you. If you tell them to fight, they'll fight. But they need to be inspired, and let's face it, 'Superman'...the last time you really inspired anyone... was when you were dead." -- Batman, to Superman, Infinite Crisis, issue 1

It's suspicious that Yuu Yuu Hakusho is right next to Hunter X Hunter on the list.

Also, do you think this was a viewer poll or rating based or what?
Rosencrantz: Do you think death could be a boat?
Guildenstern: No; Death is not, it isn’t. Death is the ultimate negative; not being. You can’t not be on a boat.
Rosencrantz: I’ve frequently not been on boats.
Guildenstern: No; what you’ve been, is not on boats.

I'm skeptical about that actually... It's just many of the shoujo series listed are ones we don't recognize (much less ever heard of at all).

I only wish that PreCure was up one more notch, just so it can rank higher than Pokemon.

Though, I'm kinda surprised Pokemon is all the way down to 44th.

Edit: Minor unrelated note. This is my 300th post, which makes me a SMU Freak... Just mentioning it for my own posteriority (and possible future reference).

Edit #2: Decided to list the shoujo series I can see...

Akage no Anne
Alps Shoujo Heidi
Cardcaptor Sakura
Chibi Maruko-chan
Futari wa Pretty Cure
Mahou Tsukai Sally
Maison Ikkoku
Ojamajo Doremi
Rose of Versailles
Sailor Moon
Shoukoujo Sara

That's an intersting list would be nice to see an USA/UK//Europe/anywere eles list to see how they compare

SeiUsa wrote:Why is Tom and Jerry on that list?
I think it count's as anime in Japan as in anything animated = anime for them but I could be wrong.

Now who going to amit they've seen most of thoese shows?
( if I go by what I've seen dubbed as well then 15 if not then 8)

You are indeed right. To the Japanese anime is anything animated, American or Japanese.

I figured Sailor Moon would make the list, some of the others that were mentioned I'm surprised made it.

I would think it would have to be overall-rating-based, otherwise there wouldn't be anything more than five years old even on the list. I think it's an "ratings gathered over the course of the show's lifetime" sort of thing.

Most of the really old series that are high up are still on (Sazae-san, Doraemon, etc.), actually. Though that makes sense; you'd want to keep them on to keep the ratings. Business, and all that.

#1 just says "Mobile Suit Gundam". No specific series marker, which leads me to believe they're counting all the Gundam series as if they were one really long one. In that case, I'm not at all surprised it's #1; Gundam has been going since the mid-1970s. It's probably got more viewers over its lifetime than the rest of the list put together.

Oh, and Sailor Moon managed eighteenth. Quite the accomplishment among such stiff competition.

As a final note, it occurred to me upon viewing the link that this was an actual show aired on Asahi TV, which I could have (and would have) watched myself if I had only known ahead of time. Sure, I would have been really tired at school the next day (what were they thinking, showing it on a Thursday?), but that's the price you pay...
Three quotes I like:

"Smart. Beautiful. Mercurius Twin."
- The "Sloganize" website

"Stop that, you! You're an accessory."
-Tsukino Usagi (to Luna, ep. 6)

"Stop the clapping! YOU'LL KILL US ALL!!"
- Professor Frink
