What do people think of this anime? I've seen a few episodes of it, and I think it's one where I like the characters, but not the setting they're in. I keep getting this idea of that I would like it better if they were 5 magical girls (with the same exact personalities) and everyone's genders were switched.
I do have some questions:
1) I would like Trowa's personality explained better to me because I've looked at a lot of stuff about him and I'm not sure. Is he reserved?
2) What kind of reception would people have given to Gundam Wing if the pilots were girls but kept the same personalities they have on the real show? Would it lose fans because frankly, it would be quite surprising if a main girl character acted like Heero (except maybe for Ayanami Rei, but Heero seems less passive than her). So far as I can tell as to what's typical with anime.
I'm just toying with a silly idea I had since I'm such a magical girl fan but I'm also a fan of cold, unemotional characters.

Re: Gundam Wing
I love this show. It was one of the first Gundam series I'd ever seen, and despite it's supposed shoujo-leanings (what with all the "pretty boys" in it), I think it's got enough action and intrigue that all genders can appreciate it.
Magical Girls piloting mechs? A bit overkill, no? =PRainbow wrote:I keep getting this idea of that I would like it better if they were 5 magical girls (with the same exact personalities) and everyone's genders were switched.
Erm...I wouldn't say "reserved" as in introverted, but like Heero, he's just a hired gun who was chosen to do this mission, and thus, for the most part, that's all he's concerned with. He's been developed into a character who has a job to do, nothing more, and so despite Quatre's insistence, he feels little need to express himself beyond his opinions on the mission or missions he's currently involved in.Rainbow wrote:I do have some questions:

I can tell you that, were the gender roles reversed, Gundam Wing would not have gotten such a warm reception as it did now. To be honest, I don't see how well it would have worked were the main pilots female; call me chauvinistic or sexist, but I just cannot see Heero and Trowa's sternness, or Wufei's reckless selfishness, exhibited through a female character, and I get the feeling that many of the shows viewers would be put off if they saw female characters acting that way.Rainbow wrote:2) What kind of reception would people have given to Gundam Wing if the pilots were girls but kept the same personalities they have on the real show? Rayearth had that in it, actually. But I was more thinking the idea of them being magical girls INSTEAD of mech pilots.Starscream wrote:

Although, isn't Ayanami Rei rather a stern girl who has many fans?

Rei Ayanami is also a much more compassionate character than Heero or Trowa, and shows a wider range of emotions than the two.

I actually didn't know that, because I haven't seen much of either show. So I was only going off of what I had heard about them. Thanks for the clarification.

It's been awhile since I've watched the series.
And to answer the question:
"1) I would like Trowa's personality explained better to me because I've looked at a lot of stuff about him and I'm not sure. Is he reserved? "
Read the Episode Zero manga and watch Endless Waltz to learn about his past.
To those who unfairly bash Relena, try watching the entire series. It's called, "Evolution of Character", as she goes from your typical rich girl to an influental figure who even stood up to her brother, Zechs.

I love Gundam Wing! I think it's actually my favorite of the Gundam series and the first one I ever got to watch, thanks to Toonami. Unfortunately, I've only seen the edited dub and the first three episodes of the Japanese version, but I'm considering getting the uncut DVDs for Christmas, since CDUniverse.com sells them for a really cheap price of $13 each. My favorite characters in the show are Heero and Duo. I like Heero just because he's cool and hot.
And I like Duo for the same reason. ^^ The only character I didn't like was Wufei. He kind of got on my nerves with the way he always wanted revenge. I don't mean to sound sexist here either, but I don't think I would have liked Gundam Wing as much had they made all the pilots female. I think one of the reasons why I got interested in this show was because all the pilots were hot. A shallow reason I know, but it did help raise my attention when I first saw the commercials for it. And Gundam Wing wouldn't have been so much fun without all the Heero x Duo doujinshi out there.
I also think Gundam Wing has one of the better dubs out there. I actually like the English VAs a little more than the Japanese ones. Even the edited dub didn't seem to be all that bad....However, I do think they need to have a shoujo Gundam series with female pilots....I think that would be very interesting to see. But what's up with Trowa's hair?

I kind of have a different problem where I've read a lot about his past but not as much about his personality. Although I might learn about that too if I read the manga story or watched that anime movie.DuoTheShinigami02 wrote: Read the Episode Zero manga and watch Endless Waltz to learn about his past.

Personally, I don't see anything in 1 x 2/2 x 1, other than just being buddies. And Gundam Wing wouldn't have been so much fun without all the Heero x Duo doujinshi out there.
The couples that I see in the entire series are Trowa and Quatre (being VERY close friends, helping each other out), Zechs and Noin, and Treize and Une.

Although I'm admittedly not a yaoi fan, I agree with DuoTheShinigami02... the only yaoi couple I could see sort of working is Quatre and Trowa, for obvious reasons.
I love the series though. The plot is a bit confusing at first, but after watching it a couple times its quite interesting. Some of the political stuff gets a bit overbearing at times.
Heero is an amazing character, one of my favorite in all of anime... perfect example of a psychological puzzle. And for those saying he's cold and emotionless... I STRONGLY disagree... it seems he acts with a lot of passion to me, especially about his missions. Heck, just watch him when he is fighting Zechs. Whereas, Trowa seems a lot more apathetic towards everything in general. It's like two different sides of growing up in a similar environment (of being nothing more than a war tool). I think the dub did these two a great disservice, especially Heero, since his Japanese VA really emphasizes his determination and passion and the English VA makes him seem like a robot.
Lady Une just plain kicks arse. And of course Relena, though hated by the fandom, I also like and think she develops really well and shows how brave and determined she is. I mean, how many girls that age can YOU think of that could seriously be queen of the world and handle it? But, I tend to admire people who are adamant about their opinions.
