Howl's Moving Castle

Post by DreamEmpress » Wed Jun 22, 2005 4:09 am

I finally got to see the movie yesterday and it was amazing! Has anyone else seen it?

For those of you who don't know what it's about....it's about a girl named Sophie, who helps run a hat shop. Her life seems fairly normal when one day she's going to visit her sister at the bakery when she is rescued by the wizard Howl. Afterward she returns to the shop only to be visited by the Witch of the Waste. The witch immediately takes a disliking to everything and turns Sophie into an old woman. Sophie is forbidden to tell anyone about her curse and she goes to seek out Howl in hopes he can help her. Howl also is cursed and they both end up helping each other.

It's a beautiful, breath taking film. It's set in a fairy tale type world and has a good mixture of warmth and humor. Taken from the book by Diana Wynne Jones. I haven't read it yet, but I bought it a few days ago, and when mom gets done with it, I can read it.

Basically, what are your thoughts on this latest wonder from Miyazaki, the book and if there's a favorite scene you have.

I recently got to see this movie myself and I think it's become my new favorite Miyazaki film. It was just a wonderful movie that I really enjoyed. I couldn't find anything wrong with it. It was just the perfect movie. I especially loved the animation in it and all the characters were great. I don't have a favorite or least favorite character because I just love them all! My favorite moment has to be when they start wondering whether or not Sophie is a witch, so Sophie decides to have a little fun and goes around saying she is a witch. ^^;; I've read some reviews of the movie and for some reason it doesn't seem like very many people like it and I don't understand why because it's such a wonderful film. This makes me wonder if Howl's Moving Castle won't win an Oscar like Spirited Away. :( I really want to read the book and I can't wait for the DVD release. I'm definetly buying it as soon as I can.

I always love Miyazaki's works, and I really want to see this. Unfortunately, it's not going to play here (I'm like 90% sure it won't), so I'd have to drive to Dallas or something to see it. I'll probably wait until it comes to DVD.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

It got to France at least two months ago (it's been a long time to me anyway ^^;; ). It was really great. The environment was just excellent, and I just can't describe the whole thing without ruining it.

It surprises me a bit that they don't really advertise this much. It's just such a wonderful film. I can't wait for it to come on dvd.

I love the part where...
Sophie reorganizes the bathroom and Howl runs out of the bathroom after his bath, his hair a reddish brown and then turns black. Howl throws a tantrum because he feels that it's scarred his beauty. It's so funny.
This was pretty good dubbed. They got a fairly good VA cast again. Especially for Howl's voice.

I haven't seen it yet, but I do anticipate seeing it because I've seen several other Ghibli films. My best friend plans on taking me to see it along with her little brother, and this will be their first Ghibli film yet.

DreamEmpress, when you get your hands on the book, could you tell us how faithful the movie was to it?

I really want to see this, but the chances of it being released inmy small South Jersey town are pretty small. So, like Tiff, I'll most likely have to wait until its on DVD. *cries*

Well, crapables. I checked the website for my local theatre, and they won't be getting it here. I wanted to see it so badly...

Actually, over here anyway, I would have to disagree. I've seen more advertisements for this movie than any other Miyazaki film, with the exception of Spirited Away's second theater run. It's still not in my area though. >.<

I really want to see this. I was suppose to see this yesterday (I was in NYC), but it was too damn crazy in the city. I'm surprised it has so many commericals, yet it's still airing in like 3 theaters.. -_-

Looks like Spirited Away winning an Oscar means nothing...

Yeah, same here. I'm seeing shitloads of commercials for it.

I see it's playing in a Theater in Rochester, NY, so... if you want to drive 1.5 hours to see it.....

Yep. Just go to here and you can enter the city and state (or zip code) and see if/where it's playing.

In my area they haven't really advertised much. At least not that I can see. There was a couple commericals and other than that I haven't heard much. My main exposure to it was online. They've advertised for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory far more than HMC around here. Everyone else on here has heard more, that's what puzzles me.

o_O see, I've only seen ONE trailer for Charlie and the Choc. Factory, and it only lasted like...a second. Seriously, I barely even saw it...whereas, HWC it shown like once every commercial break. How odd.

Muahaha. I had seen HMC subtitled, and then I saw it in theaters when it finally came to where I lived...
I. Love. This. Movie.
I think it's officially my favourite Miyazaki film. Everything rocks- The story, the music, the characters...I love the dog, and Turniphead.
My favourite part was
At the very beginning when Howl and Sophie take the stroll in the sky. I find it very romantic, and the music for that particular scene is my favourite.
Mr. James : Not even.
Dave : I''m sitting on a rather sharp tack.
Mr. James : That's gotta hurt.
Dave : Well, life's a bitch...
Mr. James : ...And then you die.
Dave : My...

Dave : ...my.

This movie was so good! It wasnt the typical boy saves girl scenario. Instead it was more like girl saves boy and then herself. Was Princess Mononoke one of his films? Im tired and cant remember.

Just a heads up for everyone - Howl's Moving Castle is being released on DVD on March 7, 2006. Not too far in the future! ^__^

And to answer moonangel7's question, yes, Princess Mononoke was one of his films. (Reference Nausicaa.net)

I heard about that! I'm so excited. Haven't seen it since last June and the minute it's released in stores, I'm gonna buy it. It was just so wonderful. I wanna see it again...
