Tsubasa Chronicles

Post by Cardcaptor Takato » Sat Jun 04, 2005 8:11 am

I'm surprised we haven't had a Tsubasa thread yet. :shock: So, I'll be the one to start one. ^^ This is the newest series from CLAMP. The anime had just gotten started in Japan and I think the manga has already finished (correct me if I'm wrong about that). This is also the first anime series I've ever seen just after it's been released in Japan. Normally, I wait until after an anime has completed its run before I start watching it, but I decided to make an expection for Tsubasa since it's CLAMP and I love CLAMP. To be honest, when I first heard about Tsubasa, I thought it was going to be a terrible idea. I mean, a series starring CLAMP's most popular characters in an alternate universe storyline? That sounded like the worst crossover idea ever and it didn't help that I normally don't like crossovers. While there are still some things about Tsubasa I find cheesy (like Sakura being the princess of a kingdom where absolutely everyone loves her), the series has been surprisingly enjoyable.

The animation style takes a little while to get used to, but it's been looking really fantastic recently, especially in episode nine, and the music is just amazing. This has to have the best music out of any CLAMP anime I've ever seen. The songs are all so catchy and I just love the BGM, especially that one BGM that has the vocals in it. Although this series features lots of characters from other CLAMP series crossed over into an alternate universe, they have different personalities and lives then their previous incarnations, so if you're an anti-crossover fan, you can think of them as entirely different characters, which is what they're supposed to be anyway, hence why everyone in Tsubasa has different seiyuu than any previous anime they've been in.

I love all the new seiyuu and Sakamoto Maaya-san is incredible as Tomoyo. I hope we get to hear her sing at least once. My fav Tsubasa character is Kurogane. I thought the fights he gets into with Mokona and Fai were hilarious, especially when Fai starts calling him all those little nicknames. My least fav character is probably Fai mainly because the series hasn't really done anything with him yet. But it's only the first nine episodes and I haven't read all of the manga yet, so maybe there's still hope. The main thing I haven't liked about Tsubasa has been some of the pacing. I mean, it's only three episodes into the show and already we have our first recap episode. Thankfully, there hasn't been another recap yet, so hopefully that will be the last of them for a while. Otherwise, this series has been really good. I just recently started reading volume one of the manga and I loved it more than the anime, but rather than making me hate the anime like what usually happens when I like the manga version more, it actually made me even more obsessed with the anime. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of this series and also the upcoming Tsubasa OSTs. I hope somebody will rip the CD when it's released so I can download the music! So, what are your thoughts on Tsubasa?

*flash of realization*

THAT'S what I was watching the other day... I recognized Sakura, but no one else (I don't really frequent CLAMP stuff). I honestly thought I was watching a recent season of Cardcaptor Sakura. This is what I get for starting in the middle of the episode. I have got to start paying more attention...

Japanese TV is really just too hard to follow for me at the moment. All the anime I really watch are things based off stuff I know, which are very few. At the moment? Pokemon Advanced Generation, Transformers Galaxy Force, the occasional ep of Naruto, and Gundam SEED Destiny.

I know, I'm pathetic... All in good time, I guess.

(Sees Japanese Off-Topic Police outside window) Right then.

It looked pretty good; I only saw ten minutes of a random episode, though (and without subtitles to boot; that's one of the bad things about being in Japan ;_; ), so I really can't add much to the discussion other than "Hey, I know what you're talking about!" Sorry about that...
Three quotes I like:

"Smart. Beautiful. Mercurius Twin."
- The "Sloganize" website

"Stop that, you! You're an accessory."
-Tsukino Usagi (to Luna, ep. 6)

"Stop the clapping! YOU'LL KILL US ALL!!"
- Professor Frink

The artwork is a bit hard to get used to. I wonder why CLAMP used this new style? I loved their old designs in Chobits and X, etc. :( It's just their...longness in the new style that bothers me.

I love the music too! It's by Kajiura Yuki! Hopefully, the pacing will improve soon. :? Bee Train seems to like using this pacing because I remember .hack had this sort of slow pacing too.

I was just thinking of starting this topic. Personally, I like this series. The concept is sort of like a Sliders (anybody remember that sci-fi show about parallel universe?) meets CLAMP. The story is pretty good, and the characters are interesting. I really like the music, the opera and violin BGM just makes it sound so epic.

The major qualm I have here is the art style. Everybody is just too thin. Its ok for certain characters like Fai, but it doesn't work for really physically active characters like Kurogane. I have a hard time convincing myself that he can swing such a huge sword with those stick figure arms he has. The battle scenes aren't that exciting to watch either since they seem kinda slow for some reason. But at least they are watchable, in the manga the art style makes the action almost indecipherable. I literally have to stare at an action panel for a minute to figure out who got hit by what.
If you just see the leaf, you'll miss the tree;
If you just see the tree, you'll miss the forest;
To see everything, effortlessly, that is what it means to truly see.

I adore Tsubasa. I'm a big fan of the manga, and the anime has held close to the manga thus far. The only problem I have is how they have skipped a couple sub-plots. Neither seem incredibly important, but one was very enjoyable.

The Tsubasa OST comes out July 12th. Yay!
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

The Tsubasa/xxxHolic movie website has been updated. It seems the Tsubasa movie will only be 30 minutes long. :? It looks really nice too! The character designs looks much improved over the TV version.

Only 30 minutes? I was expecting it to be at least one hour. Ah well. I'll still be looking forward to it anyway, and I agree that the character designs for it do look very good.

Updated Tsubasa news! According to http://www.livejournal.com/users/chibiy ... tml#cutid1, it looks like the Tsubasa anime is now going to last for three seasons and will air on Japanese television until '07. I'm not sure what I think about all this. I'm always ready to support more Clamp goodness, but I haven't exactly been all that crazy for Tsubasa (at least not as much as their other series), especially the anime version, but hopefully the show will improve as the series progresses. It does seem to keep getting better with each new episode, so I'm hoping it will.

3 seasons? :shock: *dies* The episodes these days are slow as they are. But 3 seasons? I wonder if I will drop this if the plot doesn't move any faster? The latest episode with Charme was pretty good. :o

Edit:
Ack, almost double posted but I caught myself. Anyway, at the official site they put up the trailer for xxxHolic. It looks pretty good.

If only they released a Tsubasa trailer. The character designs look really good, much better than the TV series'. :D Too bad it's only 30 minutes.

me too, but I got used to it.

This was basically the first anime I actually watched properly on line with subs. I started after spotting the first volumne of the manga in a book shop whihc my brother (who had already been watching it for a while) bought. I really enjoyed it and am rather disapointed that there there probably won't be a third season (though there will be OVAs), but I'm deffinately going to keep with the manga.
